Welcome back, everyone. I hope that you were able
create some happy memories with your family and
friends over the break. I would like to extend a warm
CPS welcome to Madison L and her family (Year 6)
who have transferred to us from Stonnington Primary
School.
State Swimming Championships
Last Thursday I had the pleasure of attending the State
Swimming Championships to support our team: Lachie
B, Lachlan S., Alex McC., Declan McC. and Rex K. as
they competed in the 12/13 boy’s medley and the
12/13 4x50m. I am delighted to report that the boys
achieved a fourth place in the medley and a third in the
4x50m. They were all exceptional ambassadors for
Cheltenham and conducted themselves with poise and
maturity during the meet. A highlight of Monday’s
assembly was the short film of the event Lachlan S.
created to share with his school mates.
Congratulations and well done to all the members of
the team!

Reflecting On Anzac Day
On 25 April, 1915, members of the Australian and New
Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) landed at Gallipoli and,
through their actions in the following ill-fated campaign,
heroically etched the name ANZAC into the history of
Australia and New Zealand. The centenary of this
military action is being commemorated this year.
Soldiers on both sides fought valiantly and suffered
appalling causalities. And yet, today there exists a
special bond between Turkey and Australia perhaps
best exemplified by the poignant words penned in
1934 by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, army officer (and
commander of the forces at Gallipoli), revolutionary
statesman, writer, and the first President of Turkey on
the Gallipoli Memorial at Anzac Cove;
Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their
lives...
You are now living in the soil of a friendly country.
Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference
between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us
where they lie side by side here in this country of
ours...
On the pool deck, following the 4x50m relay
You, the mothers, who sent their sons from
faraway countries wipe away your tears; your sons
are now lying in our bosom and are in peace, after
having lost their lives on this land they have
become our sons as well.
ANZAC Day will be marked by countless ceremonies
both in Australia and overseas. Next Monday our
school will hold its traditional ANZAC Day ceremony to
honour the spirit of the ANZACs and others who have
served in times of conflict in the name of Australia.
Invited guests will include members of the local
Returned Services League (RSL). The RSL evolved
from the camaraderie and mateship shown by the
“Diggers” for the welfare of their mates during and after
the First World War. This ethos of compassion and
service remains today through the RSL’s tireless
efforts supporting returned service people and their
families and upholding the ANZAC tradition.
In support of the RSL’s ANZAC Appeal we will be
selling a range of badges and wrist bands this week.
These range in price from $1 to $5 and will be on sale
from today. Our student leaders will be visiting
classrooms daily for donations and student purchases.
Please help support this wonderful cause. Buy a
badge and wear it with pride.

A stunning display of children’s artworks in honour of
ANZAC day, created by Carol Kozlowski
Gandhi said ‘If we are to reach real peace in the world,
we shall have to begin with the children’. Let us hope it
begins with our children.

KITCHEN CLASSROOM NEWS
Last week the junior students made our traditional
Anzac biscuits. Please enjoy photos from PB.
Getting along is the You Can Do It foundation key
for this term. Getting along means working well
with my classmates, solving conflicts peacefully,
being sensitive to the feelings of others, being
respectful and helping make my community a
better place to live and learn.

UPGRADE ROAD CONSTRUCTION:
I would like to inform our school community that
road construction works will commence on 27
April, 2015, along Charman Road and continuing
to Barrett Street.
The works will involve
installation of a major new drainage system,
footpath, seating and garden beds. I have met
with the construction engineer from City of
Kingston and with the Project Contractor to
determine the minimal impact this will have on
our school operations, limiting works at both the
commencement and the end of each school day.
These works are expected to continue for the
remainder of Term 2.

LIBRARY NEWS
Scholastic Book Fair will be coming soon! Watch
this space for more news.
National Simultaneous Story time (NSS) is just 4
weeks away! NSS is an annual campaign that
aims to encourage more young Australians to read
and enjoy books. Now in its 15th successful year
it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to
promote the value of reading and literacy using an
Australian children's book that explores age
appropriate themes, and addresses key learning
areas of the National Curriculum
3. Borrow or purchase a copy of the shared storybook
and read it at NSS time with your family and
friends.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
All Premier’s Reading Challenge Books are in the
process of being permanently marked in our
library at Cheltenham for easy student
identification.
All Prep, Year 1 and 2 PRC books will have a
yellow ta. Year 3 and 4 PRC books will have a
green tab. And Year 5 and 6 PRC books will have
a blue tab.
Please let your children know that if they need
assistance with PRC to come and visit me at
school on Monday and Wednesday Lunchtimes.
By facilitating National Simultaneous Story time
we aim to;
· promote the value of reading and literacy;
· promote the value and fun of books;
· promote an Australian Writer and Publisher;
· promote story time activities in public libraries
and communities around the country;
· provide opportunities to involve parents,
grandparents, the media and others to participate
in and enjoy the occasion.
This year NSS takes place on Wednesday 27
May at 11am (AEST). At Cheltenham Primary
School the Library will be participating in this
shared event. We would love it if you could join
us by sharing The Brothers Quibble written by
Aaron Blabey. There are many ways you can do
this:
1. Go online to the NSS website on the day
2. Go online to your local library reading time or go
into your local library
Book Club
Lamont Book Club is working nicely now with
many people finalising payments online. Thank
you to all of you who participate. Cheltenham
Primary School enjoys 20 % rewards on all
purchases.
The winner of the Accidentally Awesome
Competition from Issue 2 is our own Lily P in
Year 3! Judges at Lamont said her entry answered
the question asked, was very well written, and her
story was very inventive. Well Done Lily!

Hope you all enjoyed the holidays and a book or
two. We had some very enthusiastic
readers…Congratulations to Olivia F 1/2D and
Megan F 3/4B for completing the 2015 PRC –
Well done!! The Challenge runs from now until
the 9th September and registration is still open to
students who wish to join the 2015PRC
(Registrations will remain open until Friday 29th
May- a copy of the registration form is available
at the end of this newsletter. It is very encouraging
to see a large number of Prep students
participating in the Challenge this year – Well
done!
Thank you to teachers Miss Alana Gadsby and
Miss Holly Smith for once again looking after the
2015 PRC Champions this year.
They will be involved in various projects
throughout the school community.
I will be away from April 29th – May 15th. The
PRC will run as usual so continue to send in
registration forms and Student’s book records for
verification. Thank you to Mrs Nalini Bradford
(Satya and Indira’s Mum) for looking after the
PRC during this time. Any questions can be
directed to the School Office. I look forward to
