Leppävirta and Heinävesi
routes that belong to Saimaa’s
water way, together with
highways 5 and 23, connect
the area’s five municipalities
with the rest of Finland.
Proximity to the waterways
gives the region’s culture
its own stamp. Many people
think that this is the most
beautiful part of the Finnish
Lake District. A boating tourist
can also easily come here, and
the high-quality port services
guarantee a pleasant stay.

CANAL REGION
Heinävesi route’s six canals
The narrow and winding waterways,
the island-open lakes and old canals
make Heinävesi’s route a unique
ensemble. This must be experienced
at least once in a lifetime!
The canalisation of the Heinävesi
route began in the late 1800s,
and there are six canals on-route.
Karvio’s canal opened a ship route
from Kuopio to Heinävesi, when
it was completed in 1896. Kerma,
Vihovuonne and Pilpa canals above
Kermajärvi, were built in the years
1903-1906. This opened up a ship
route to Savonlinna. Varistaipale and
Taivallahti canals were dug in 19111916. Out of these, Varistaipale’s
four-chamber canal has Finland’s
highest drop of 14.5 metres.

Konnus canal
The first of the Konnus canals
was completed for Leppävirta
in 1841. Today, the one that
continues to operate, and the third
canal in order, was completed in
1973. There is plenty to see in the
Konnus region: in addition to the
three different aged canals, the
region has five fish-rich rapids,
and relief from cultural hunger
is provided with, for example,
summer theatres, dances and a
variety of entertainment events.

Taipale canal
Taipale’s old canal that is located in
Varkaus was Finland’s first shut-off
canal when it was completed in
1840. The half-mile-long deep
canal that is in use today, connects
Haukivesi and Unnukka, and it
was completed in 1967. Summer
visitors of the Taipale canal area are
kept busy with the Canal museum,
cafe and local produce shop. Out
of the attractions, the canal path
and the old stone canal are not
worth missing.

WATER NATURE
Eye and soul food
Linnansaari National Park
Linnansaari National Park, located
in Haukivesi, represents the Saimaa
Lake nature at its best. In the lean of
the region’s numerous islands are the
famous Saimaa ringed seals, and it
is also home to one of our country’s
most dense osprey populations.
The Linnavuori vantage point, nature
path (2km) as well as marked trails
(5.5 and 7 km) are situated on the
park’s main island. In late winter,
a 20 km long skating trail is maintained in the region.

Kolovesi National Park
A desert environment, where you
can quiet down at the edge of Lake
Saimaa. Rugged cliffs and ancient
rock paintings tell of the millennia
coexistence of nature and human
beings. The Saimaa ringed seals
can also been seen in the area. The
National Park waters are excellent for
canoeing and rowing.
There are two marked nature trails in
the region: Nahkiaissalo 3.3 km and
Mäntysalo 3.8 km.

Soravesi’s Archipelago
Sorsavesi’s varied landscapes consist of
a number of islands, small islets and
rocky areas.
In the centre of the lake there is a
concentration of idyllic small fishing
huts. The northern part of region
has long, deep valleys and high hills.
The beaches are mainly rocky and
boulder-rich, and a moraine zone
layered by the continental glacier runs
over the southern half of the lake. An
ancient rock painting has recently
been found in Ukkokivi Island in
Sorsavesi.

Suvasvesi Jakamot islands
The archipelago of Jakamot splits
Suvas in to two backs, Kukkari
and Haapaselkä. Both backs are
thought to have arisen as a result of a
meteorite impact. The region’s islands
are rocky and have been smoothed
during the Ice Age. They are in a private nature reserve, so camping and
campfires are not permitted.
In the northern part of Jakamot is
Kääriä Island, which is a popular
place to camp, including among fishermen. Hornanmäki that is located in
Soisalo is a known ancient sacrificial
place, which is also mentioned in
Kalevala. The easiest way to get to
Jakamot is by boat or canoe, which
can be launched at Horsmalahti’s boat
launching site.

Ämmäkoski and
Kämäri Island
The scenic Kämäri Island has been
preserved as a green area in the centre
of Varkaus. The three-kilometer-long
nature trail winds between Ämmäkoski and Taipale canal. The area has a
rich fauna and the rapids give an extra
touch to the lush landscape.

174-metre-high Joenmäki Mountain in Varkaus is free to use.
Peisi’s 4.3 km long nature path
winds through the nearby terrain,

Tähtitorni is equipped with

Kotkatharju
Recreation Area
A skiing and hiking route running
through the Natura area, on the
Kotkatharju slopes, in Joroinen. The
marked trails criss-cross through
the unique ridge sceneries that have
been created during the Ice Age,
and are surrounded by clear water
ponds. Fitness trail Kotkanpolku
has a length of 7 km.

Orinoro Gorge
Orinoro gorge is a family-friendly,
prestigious and exciting hiking
and outing site on Soisalo Island
in Leppävirta. The marked nature
trail takes you to the verticalwalled gorge scored during the
Ice Age, which is about 100 m in
length and has a depth of almost
20 m. Snow and ice remain in
the gorge until June and a spring
gushes at the bottom. Along the
route is a lean.
Mula and Ruokojärvi
watchtowers
The watchtower on the east coast
of Mulajärvi offers a possibility to
spot, for example, a bittern or a
marsh harrier, and it is also suitable
for the disabled. Ruokojärvi bird
tower can accommodate about 15
people at a time. Next to it is a lean
with a campfire.

Peace and tranquillity
Valamo and Lintula monasteries
are open to all those interested in
Orthodoxy. The serene atmosphere
of the monastery is a great opportunity to quiet down and relax.
Both monasteries have services on a
daily basis.
Valamo Monastery
The friars of Valamo settled in
Heinävesi 75 years ago. The monastery area has three churches, three
chapels, a cultural centre offering
courses, Restaurant Trapesa, the
monastery shop Tuohus, wine shop,
the monastery hotel and guesthouses.

Heinävesi Cultural Church
Situated high on a hill, the wooden church built in
1891 is one of the largest of its kind in Finland.

Joroinen church and bell tower
A wooden cross church built in the 1700s, which has an
altarpiece that is the work of known Savo artist Pekka
Halonen. Tapuli Cafe operates in the bell tower during
the summer, which also has a small church museum.

The Church of St. George represents the
Karelian and northern Russian church
construction tradition and it has quickly
become a place of pilgrimage and an
attraction. The interior of the Church
of St. George is a true masterpiece of
craftsmanship.
Near to the church is a cafe
that operates in the summer
for groups or by reservation.
The cafe serves traditional
local food, homebaked goods,
and own organic honey.
The church is open to the public.

Heinävesi Music Festival, Heinävesi Church
CHURCHES
Leppävirta Church
Located in the centre of Leppävirta village, C.L. Engel’s
design, the stone church was introduced in 1846. The
neoclassical church has 2200 seats, and the two-part
altarpiece was painted by Samuel Elmgren. Leppävirta
church is famous for its brightness and good acoustics.

Pieksämäki Old Church and bell tower
Pieksämäki Old Church designed by August Sorsa
was completed in 1753. The church is one of Eastern
Finland’s oldest preserved wooden churches. The adjacent bell tower, also designed by Sorsa, was completed
in 1746. Mikael Toppelius’s paintings are displayed in
the church.
The parish of Pieksämäki also has a new church at
Keskuskatu 27 as well as Jäppilä, Virtasalmi and Vaalijala churches. The Virgin Mary Church of Nativity in
Pieksämäki serves Orthodox Christians in the area.

Evangelical-Lutheran congregation’s
main church of Varkaus
The church designed by Martti Paalanen was completed in 1939. Its altar fresco ”Thy kingdom come” is
painted by Lennart Segelstrålen and it’s one of largest
of its kind in the Nordic region. The church is open
daily during the summer months.

Ristikivi Church
The atmospheric open-air church in Partaharju. The
log-walled church has no roof, and an ancient stone
cross acts as its altar. The church was designed by
architect Jussi Lappi-Seppälä.

Harjuranta Nature Church
The nature church located on the 174-metre-high
Joenmäki Mountain in Harjuranta is free to use. The
Church is also located in the immediate vicinity of
Peisi’s nature trail and Peis-Immonen caves.

MUSEUMS
Mechanical Music Museum
The museum’s specialty are guided tours that are fuelled
with action-packed and fun-filled stories. About 400
amazing instruments are presented during it, which are
displayed in large halls according to their age.
The museum instrument collection is amazing. It
includes music boxes, automatic pianos and orchestras, violins and accordions, as well as hurdy-gurdys
from small desktop models to the huge Amadeus. The
greatest of all is the world’s largest orchestrion, the
75-player Popper Goliath.

its inhabitants, from the comb

Karhulahti local
history museum
Peasant museum, which dates back
to 1500’s. The museum has been
decorated in the 1920s style of a
farmer’s home, and there is also an
exhibition of old maps on the walls.

An old log cabin and smoke sauna
moved from Juojärvi’s island, at the
coast of Koskijärvi, in Heinävesi’s

Museum and Cafe
In the museum exhibition you can
explore the history of the canal
region, and the old stone canal on

Konnus canal region
A canal region comprising of three
different aged canals and five rapids.
In the historical rapids area favoured
by fishermen and hikers, there are

Summer and winter meet at Vesileppis. At the same

area is the world’s largest rock mined ski arena, which

Vesileppis Arena that will open in April, offers a wide
range of opportunities for sport, cultural and exhibition
events. The arena’s large sports hall can be divided into
three separate playing fields, and as a uniform space
large sports events and concerts can be arranged there.
A six-lane bowling alley will also be constructed in the
area, as well as several smaller multi-purpose facilities.

For the large lake areas of Joroinen,

Haukivesi is famous for its good
pike-perch hall. Fly fisherman

Shine of chrome! The Big Wheels
event is considered as one of
Finland’s largest open-air classic car
round-ups, and it collects an abundance of participants to Pieksämäki,

have attended the event. Big Wheels
will culminate to a large car parade
in the beautiful lake sceneries,
right in the city centre. The parade
