The Gaeta villa was built in 1920 in the imperial style, which was popular at that time, on a promontory on Lake Como near the town of Menaggio. The position is absolutely unique: it is surrounded on 3 sides by Lake Como with unspoilt views to Bellagio on the opposite side. The villa was restored in the 1980s and divided in 22 luxury apartments. The GAETA Villa set in 5000 m² of wonderful parkland was used as a backdrop for filming in spring 2007 when the concluding scene of the James bond film "Casino Royal" was shot here. The park is very extensive and was laid out by an important landscape gardener, it offers many inviting seating areas with breath‐taking views at some of them. The villa also has its own mooring for boats. In addition there is a bathing area in the villa’s park, which is reserved exclusively for the residents of the villa. The project originated from Adolfo and Gino Coppedè di Montemurlo (Florence), on behalf the Ambrosoli family, owners of the famous confectionary industry with the same name, and was built by the building contractor, Tettamanzi. It was finished in 1921. The architectural style of this building reflects the trend of the last decades of the nineteenth century, which continued up into the twenties of the twentieth century. It reflected in a more spectacular rather than substantial way, the eclectic architecture and art that were wide‐spread at that time, from which many special characteristics emerge. Traditional materials such as marble and stone were used. The decoration was in valuable materials such as ceramic, precious metals, wrought steel. The preference for the facades and decorative elements is reminiscent of past styles (medieval romanticism and gothic, Renaissance, baroque). The use of contemporary elements in the styles of Liberty, Art Deco, etc. and in the end a mixture of all these elements in a more or less capricious and ingenious way. This recapitulatory description clearly exemplifies the fundamental will of the fans of this style, i.e. the refusal to use modern construction materials (cement and iron) and manufacturing methods, instead they preferred the artisan way. The transformation of the Abrosoli villa into condos began in 1978 and was finished in the eighties. The exterior of the villa fortunately remained unchanged, also in the detail. The three storey building has a square ground floor. The two towers are the preferred choice, they have a great view of the lake particularly the slimmer tower. The entrance to the garden goes through a so‐ called “triumphal arc” with a sloping roof, with engraved decorations in plaster, in the typical Coppedè style. The rooms were originally furnished by Adolfo Coppedè, but have now changed completely, even though they have tried to keep the parquet and mosaic floors and the coffered ceilings, as far as it was practically possible. Local construction materials were used from the outset: Brick and Moltrasio stone for the visible walls, Malenco stone for the even covering, Musso marble for the decorative elements such as columns, capitals, window frames, profiles etc. This is a unique building situated on Lake Como, its beauty and uniqueness are emphasized by the location. If the Ambrosoli had not been inspired by the extravagant luxury of the Coppedè, we would not have the pleasure of seeing this special architecture at the lake today. It was very popular with the industrialist class at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
