Lifelines April 20,2015 - New Life Christian Church
Lifelines Mid-week news from New Life Christian Church www.nlchristian.org SUNDAY SERVICES Bible Study — 9:00am Worship — 9:00am Worship — 10:30am Matt Malott, Minister Hugh Wicks, Associate OUR MISSION: EXALT God, EVANGELIZE all, EQUIP believers, EXTEND God’s love. Number 16 April 20, 2015 Volume 5 Another meaningful worship experience this past Sunday. I thought the song set that concluded the service was a great way to put an exclamation mark on a day when we talked about praising God. I also appreciated Pam’s special number reminding us of our need for God’s amazing grace. I know that I am prejudiced but I can’t think of anywhere else I would rather be on Sunday than NLCC. Several of you have mentioned that you are enjoying the series on prayer. Also a couple of people told me that they had done the homework exercise during the week. I think that is great. I wanted this series to be both instructional and practical and I felt if we had something to do each day durMatt Malott ing the week it would help us keep focused on this matter of prayer. So, I hope you will give it a try. This week each day we are to list some aspect of God’s nature for which we praise Him and one act for which we thank him. I hope you will give it a shot. We live in the age of technology. I remember when I got my first electric typewriter. It was an IBM Selectric. You could change the font by replacing a ball. I thought that was one of the coolest things ever. Now we live in the age of computers and I think they are amazing. I have a software Bible study program called Logos. It is a powerful program containing thousands of resources: Bibles, commentaries, articles, sermons, graphics and more. Every time I use it I learn something new about what it can do. For instance, I can type in a word like “Tabernacle” and in seconds it will give me a list of every resource in its vast library where the word “Tabernacle” is used. Or, when I am studying a specific Bible passage I can hover over a word in the text with my cursor and the program will tell me everything about that word; how it appears in the original language, all the grammatical information, the meaning of the word and how it is used in other kinds of literature. If I am reading a sermon or an article and I want to use a part of it in a lesson or sermon, I can highlight the part I want to save and send it to another document. Not only does it send what is highlighted, but it provides a footnote with all the appropriate information so you know where the information came from. What an amazing tool! One of the coolest things this program will do is display Bible verses. If I am reading a commentary and a Bible reference is given I can hover over the reference with the cursor and a box will pop up with that verse or verses in it. If you want to see the passage in a different translation, that is accomplished with the click of the mouse. Solomon said there is nothing new under the sun. I got to thinking about that and came to the conclusion that my Logos software only does in a different way what King David knew to do a few thousand years ago. David understood the importance of accessing the Word of God. He wrote in Psalm 119:11, “I have hidden Your Word in my heart that I might not sin against You.” David knew that to be successful in his walk with God he needed God’s words in his mind and the ability to recall them when necessary. When faced with an issue David didn’t use a mouse and a cursor, he pulled the appropriate words from God directly from his heart. You see, he had hidden them there just for that purpose. We would do well to follow his example. Box 970 Lady Lake, FL 32158 I really appreciated Matt’s remarks about “Upward Prayer” on Sunday. The Bible is full of commands to offer praise and thanks to God. It’s ironic that we refer to Sunday mornings as “worship services,” because worship is supposed to be happening all week Hugh Wicks long. Sundays should be the overflow of what’s happening each day. Now that winter’s behind us, it’s easy to think of slowing down as we head into summer. But God deserves our praise regardless of the season. Let’s make every effort to give Him our best in worship, on Sunday mornings and every day of the week. I think Colossians 3:16-17 could serve as marching orders for our summer at New Life: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” We’ll have a special opportunity on Sunday evening, May 3rd, as Bryan Popin leads us in praise. Don’t miss it! Mark your calendars! Samantha Mero, the first missionary NLCC supported, will be with us July 19. Sam is a Bible translator working in Guinea, West Africa. More information later. Carl & Ruth Hortin moved into The Village of Collier the day before Thanksgiving, 2012 from Bloomington, IL.
