Colin Walkden Admirals Club Captain I haven’t got as great deal to report this time as the season is just getting underway, however since my last report, we have been entertained by a fantastic display of golf by Jordan Speith at the Masters. As some of you will be aware, we held a sweepstake for the Masters. The winner of the sweepstake was Nick Thornton. I would like to thank everyone who took part and help to raise £62 for my chosen charity, Rainbows. There are a few people I must congratulate in this report. Firstly congratulations to Troy Anderson for getting a hole in one on the twelfth hole a couple of weeks ago, also congratulations everyone (most of the teams who entered) who beat Daryl and me in the annual Captain and Pro Challenge. By the time this newsletter comes out, we will have played our first match in this year’s Southwell Auto’s Trophy. On that note, I would just like to remind anyone who wishes to play in this competition to either put your name and contact details on the notice in the corridor or register your interest using the eagle app. In June, there is the annual Waterloo Open. Anyone who wishes to enter a team, please complete an application form with the names, handicaps and CDH numbers of all your team members and post it to me with the appropriate payment. As I reported in the last newsletter, this year’s Captains away day is at Kedleston Park. The cost is £55, which includes bacon cob and coffee on arrival. For those of you who have never been to a Captains away day, we start by having 9 hole of golf in the morning followed by soup and sandwiches. This is then followed by 18 holes in the afternoon. We round off the day with a two course evening meal. There are nearest the pin prizes, drawn blind pairs as well as prizes for first second and third overall. In addition, there will be separate ladies prizes. If you wish to come along please put your name on the list in the corridor and pay in the pro shop. The Charlton Trophy was played on Easter Monday and was won by Chris Withe, Teresa Harrison-Withe, John and Margaret Villiers pictured with Vice Captain Adrienne Kelly The next events, as I write this newsletter, are The Banner Kirkham on th May Day (4 ) and the Blue Ribbon on Spring Bank Holiday (25 th) And last but not least our Interclub Mixed Team – Adrienne Kelly, Andy Henderson, Julie Walkden and Jason Davies – were victorious against College Pines at Retford and go through to the next round. Congratulations all and good luck ! Bob Ward Admirals Sectretary Have you picked up your new club diary yet? They are in the pro-shop and I hope you all enjoy the mix of competitions provided for you this year. I would particularly like to welcome new members to the club and hope that you participate in these. If you are transferring a handicap from another club and know your CDH number then simply put it on the form you receive in the new members pack and you are good to go. Those who do not have a handicap will need to submit 3 cards to obtain one. All adult members are entitled to receive a free County Card and these are also available in the pro-shop. If you visit the N.U.G.C. website there is a link to a list of around 1500 participating clubs across the country. We have provided links to this on both the app and our website. Talking about our website, take a look at the Admirals dedicated site. John Cockell has made an excellent job of bringing this up to date. The draws for the Club’s knockout competitions have been made. I urge all of you to make every effort to contact your opponent at the earliest opportunity. I hate seeing Oakmere Park Proshop players progress by default. The Winter Competitions have now drawn to a close and my congratulations go to the Saturday final winners Paul Stoker and Michael O'Neill winning by 4 and 2. The runners-up were Tony Eaton Alan Seddon. The Sunday final was played in abysmal In stock Puma Titan Tour Golf Shoes conditions, the heavy rain never letting up. Some decisions have already been made and the two big ones will be an increase in maximum handicaps to 40.4 for both men and women, and a change in the compulsory 4 Ball Betterball stroke allowance from Only £129.99 the current ¾ to 90%. The committee will have to consider the effect these two decisions will have on our competitions. New in stock My contribution regarding the rules of golf this month concerns when a ball is holed. Before I could stop him he picked it up and was not happy when I with told him he had incurred a 1-shot penalty but could replace his ball against the Flyweave flagstick and then move or remove the flagstick to see if it falls into the hole. technology Roger Allen Admirals Seniors Organizer The weather has finally calmed down and we can now believe that spring at last, really is with us. This should now allow us to get down to some serious golf without either being drowned or blown away!! Our club match team continued their excellent start to the year recording a home win against Southwell on 1t April by 4.5 games to 1.5, but unfortunately were brought sharply back to earth on 23rd April by losing away to Springwater by 5 games to 1. The next game is against Maywood on 28th April again away from home; as such this will provide another stern test of their resolve. We are also taking part in the Taskers over 50’s Knockout Trophy and played our first round match against Beauchief GC on 7th April and managed a win by 6 games to 1. The tie was however not without its problems, as at the last minute the Beauchief course was deemed unplayable and the tie had to be moved to Oakmere. Many thanks to Daryl & Shane for making this change possible at short notice. The draw for the next round of the competition has been made and we have again been drawn away from home. This time against a team from Mapperley, the game is scheduled for 30th April and the competition now moves into a “sudden death” stage. This summer’s Seniors away day event will take place at Birstall GC on 12 th August. The event will comprise bacon cob on arrival, 18 holes of golf with both singles and team competition being run, which is followed by a 2 course meal and prize giving. Full details of this event are displayed on the Seniors noticeboard. For the benefit of any new members who have just joined the club or existing members who have reached the qualifying age the Seniors Section is open to Admiral Club members who are over 55 years of age. We hold a regular weekly drawn competition and meet every Monday morning (Bank Holidays excluded) between 7.30 & 7.45am in the spike bar. The competition playing order and pairing is drawn at this stage and 1st tees are from 8am .This is an excellent opportunity to play in a regular competition with a changing mix of people of a similar age that have varying levels of ability. Details of the format for the competition of the day are shown in the club diary and anyone who is interested should just turn up on the day before 7.45am and enter the draw for tee times which range from 8 until 9am. Richard Bond Head GreenKeeper The beginning of a new season is already upon us. It doesn’t seem long since we were on our hands and knees for hours laying +5000sqm of turf. The results of these labours are now nearly ready for play. (Despite an extremely dry spring) All being well the bunkers and surrounds will be in play for May 15 th. All the areas have grown in really well with excellent root establishment and a really healthy looking sward of grass. All I would ask when they come into play, is that please try and take as much care as possible with the bunker edges. Avoid walking out onto the noses of the bunkers, these will be the most susceptible to damage at first. I often hear comments about the sand used in the bunkers at Oakmere. The sand is a specific bunker sand sourced from a local quarry. It is Mansfield Sand’s MM35 Bunker sand a high quality, medium coarse sand with sub rounded particles, (£22/t) not builders sand! Exactly the same sand is used at Hollinwell and Sherwood Golf Club. After having spent so much time, effort and money on the redesigning and construction of the bunkers I can assure you that there is no way a sub-standard sand would be used. (White wash sand would not be applicable with these bunkers as it would mix with soil rapidly losing its colour within a few weeks. I hope you all enjoy the challenge of the newly designed holes, there is more to come. Symbolic of the modern spirit is the new TW ’15 shoe, the third iteration of the TW series to use a Nike Free-inspired outsole, which was a first for the golf industry in 2013. This year, Tiger Woods and Nike footwear innovator Tobie Hatfield collaborated again to deliver another first in golf footwear innovation with Flyweave technology, a revolutionary advance in the upper design that offers strength and support, but is also incredibly lightweight and flexible. Flyweave is a form-fitting performance-woven material featured on the upper of the TW ’15 that offers a natural range of motion. Unlike traditional shoe design, which is based on cut and sew, Flyweave allows designers to use strands of yarn to precisely engineer – stitch by stitch – shoes for maximum performance. Made from a one-piece mono-body construction the ultra lightweight material benefits from great strength to weight characteristics and provides support where needed. Woods, like other elite athletes, is always looking for an edge over his competition. Due to the lightweight Flyweave technology and the golf-specific Nike Free-inspired outsole, designers were able to make the TW ‘15 more than 10 percent lighter than the previous model..
