RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS - If you
want to join the Catholic Church or complete your
sacraments of initiation (First Eucharist and/or
Confirmation), join us for the RCIA. Weekly classes
begin each September.
LOW-GLUTEN (0.01%) HOSTS - We provide lowgluten hosts for those with Celiac Disease. Please
inform the priest or deacon prior to the celebration
of Mass; at communion time, approach the priest
celebrant who will have this sacred host.
SANCTUARY MEMORIALS - Weekly sanctuary lamps
or flowers for Masses may be requested in memory
of a loved one or to mark a special occasion. The
cost of a lamp is $15; floral arrangements are $75.
Please visit the parish office at least a week in
advance, so that the dedication may be included in
the bulletin.
MASS INTENTIONS - Masses should be requested at
the parish office; the stipend is $10.

Dear Parishioners
It seems to me that our Lenten Season is moving
along so quickly and we move closer and closer to the
celebration of Holy Week and the great Solemnity of
Easter. At least we are leaving our rather brutal winter
behind us! Please keep our liturgical schedule around
for reference and make a special effort to not only
attend yourself but invite friends and family to join you.
On the Feast of St. Joseph, Fr. Gene returned to
his native India. It was a pleasure to welcome him
back “home” and to enjoy his company, albeit for a
short time. With him I thank you for the tremendous
generosity you have shown to him, especially through
your support of this year’s Parish Lenten Work of
Charity. The appeal will continue through the
remainder of Lent.

Religious Education Registration
It is time to register your children for Religious
Education classes for the 2015-2016 school year.
Please remember that certain sessions fill up quickly
so early registration is highly recommended. We can
more easily accommodate your preference if you
register promptly. We have a special offer for the
early registration. Please check the letter that we
mailed with the registration forms. If you haven't
received it yet, please call us.
For your convenience, all registration forms also are
available on the OLS-SA website (www.ols-sa.org).
You may print the registration form and mail or bring it
to the Religious Education Office. If you have a Pre-K
or Kindergarten student entering Religious Education
classes, please print the registration form from the
website or call our office to register your child.
Along with that of Christmas, the
Easter collection is one of the most
important of the year. It helps us meet
our many obligations—to our church
and school employees, keeping our
facilities in good shape, utilities, and snow removal
(the latter being, once again this year, very costly).
We receive many appeals through the year and I trust
that in your goodness you will not forget our parish
community. Prayerfully consider a generous gift to the
parish as we celebrate the “solemnity of solemnities”
at Easter!

Apostles Aplenty!
Thanks to all the parishioners who
expressed
an
interest
in
participating in the Washing of the
Feet ceremony during the Holy
Thursday liturgy, we have our twelve participants. The
Solemn Mass of the Lord’s Supper will take place at
7:00 p.m. on April 2 at St. Anthony Church.
Sunday and Summer Developments
Sunday sessions are now available for students in
Grades 7 and 8.
A Summer Program is now offered as an alternative
to regular year-round classes! See below for details.
Attention all Parents whose children are attending
Trenton Catholic Academy. If your child is in 2nd
grade or 7th grade, please make sure that you register
your child for sacramental preparation.

Special thanks are due to all who attended the Mass
in honor of St. Joseph last week. Holy Mass was
followed by the Blessing of the “St. Joseph Table” and
the enjoyment of many breads and sweets…a
welcome break in our Lenten observance! Thanks to
all who prepared this celebration—the Rosary Altar
Society and Michael Amantia.

Introducing….
Summer Religious Education
The Summer Program is offered to our parishioners
as an alternative to the traditional once a week class
format that is held from September through May. It
will be held:
Monday –Friday
July 20-24 & July 27-31
9:00 a.m. -Noon
The Summer Program seeks to accommodate the
busy schedules of our families by eliminating the
weekly “shuttling” of children to the parish campus
from September through May. Class time is the same
as the regular program but condensed into a twoweek period. his “intensive” plan provides for a more
focused approach and retention of the subject matter.
Students will stay “connected” to the parish
throughout the year through weekly Mass and by
attending 3 catechetical sessions during the Advent,
Lent, & Easter Seasons. Parental involvement is
expected.
It is open to students of Grades 3 -6.

Blessing of Food
Please join us for a special liturgy for
the blessing of Easter foods. This
traditional custom will take place on
Saturday, April 4, at the OLS campus
immediately following Morning Prayer,
which begins at 10:00 a.m.
Is Your Nest Empty?
Parents, remember when you registered here? Maybe
your children went to our parish school before
attending high school and college. Now they're out on
their own, and you have an empty nest—but we still
have them on your record. If they're still living in this
area, please remind them to visit the parish office (or
visit the parish Website) to register on their own. This
can facilitate their obtaining the documentation
needed should a friend ask them to stand as a
godparent or confirmation sponsor.

Our School Needs You!
What's New at Your Parish School?
There sure is a boatload of exciting plans taking shape
at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic School. After several
days of Terra Nova assessments, everyone enjoys a break
from the routine. That is just what we did at school! Middle
school planned their days of Terra Nova around a fun-filled
trip! Yes, believe it or not, middle school had a fun day
planned to visit Notre Dame and attend their performance
of Les Miserables. A heavy plot, but one filled with moral
dilemmas along with great music. This week, we
completed a few make-up assessments while ensuring
that our third through fifth grade students had their day at
the theatre! They enjoyed a wonderful day at Villa Victoria.
There they enjoyed a fantastic performance of Joseph and
the Amazing Colored Dreamcoat.
Of course, we need some time to come together as
a school and we certainly did that! We begin each
day as we begin all things, in prayer. Our student
announcers, Rheana Bromwell and Joseph Stillwell,
start our day each morning with a call to prayers. Our
youngest OLS students, Kindergarten, planned our
liturgy for St. Joseph's Day (Thursday, March 19). This
was a very special Mass in so many ways. Kindergarten
discussed the readings, and offered the intentions. The
students in middle school assisted with the readings,
and our outstanding Our Lady of Sorrows Select Choir,
under the direction of Mr. Kemmey, provided the music.
Most fittingly, this Mass was offered in memory of a
much loved and long remembered St. Anthony's School
Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Flanagan. I am proud to say
that I was blessed to have been taught by this wonderful
and gifted Kindergarten teacher so many years ago. On
this day an entire school, led by the Kindergarten
children that she so loved, remembered her in prayer.
Our After School Program (ASP) continued the
excitement of the day! Under the direction of Francesca
Gioe and her dedicated team of assistants, they celebrated
St. Joseph's Day with the blessing of the St. Joseph's
Bread. Father Jean was on hand to bless the beautiful
loaves of bread, formed in the letter "J". He offered special
words to the children, and then the feast of bread and
butter began! Thank you, ASP, for offering our children
these most special afternoons, filled with love and care.
There is always one more thing! It's exactly what
makes your parish school so special! We have
invited an outstanding guest to visit our school on
Monday, March 23. Through the generosity of the
school PTA, we are hosting Native Pride Dancers.
Dressed in authentic Native American clothing, they will
teach our children about the beauty, symbolism, and
skills of Native American music, dance, and regalia. This
visit will include stories, musical styles, and insight into
the history of Native American life. Intrigued? Why not
make this the time to stop by to visit your parish school?

We would like to expand membership of our parish
School Board. A Catholic school board in the Diocese
of Trenton is an advisory body of delegated
responsibility. It seeks to:
• Develop a school’s long range strategic plan
• Establish annual goals and objectives
• Establish realistic enrollment goals
• Adopt and monitor the annual budget
• Review policies and procedures
• Address facility needs
• Promote marketing and public relations
A member would commit to a monthly meeting. A
member should:
• Be a practicing Catholic
• Possess a genuine interest in Catholic
education
• Be a team player
• Be committed to the mission of the parish and
school

Pastoral Council Seeks New Members
The Parish Pastoral Council is opening up its
membership to replace those who are scheduled to
step down. The Council functions as a participatory,
advisory body supporting Msgr. Gervasio as he
addresses current and future challenges facing our
parish community. Serving on the Council is a unique
way to gain appreciation for the larger Our Lady of
Sorrows - St. Anthony parish picture and to contribute
in a meaningful way to its future. (We have fun, too!).
The Council meets every other month, on the
second Wednesday. We recess during July/August.
The two-year term of appointment for new
members begins in September, 2015.
Anyone interested in applying for a Council
membership should submit her/his name and phone
number to Bob Marino, who is coordinating the
process for the Council. Bob will be pleased to

Renovation Recognition Plaques
They have been a long time in coming, but they have
finally been installed. Donors to the Campaign for the
Renovation of Our Lady of Sorrows Church and the
Elevator Addition at St. Anthony Church may now
view the recognition plaques have been erected. The
plaque at St. Anthony is in the church level vestibule
of the elevator entrance. The plaque at Our Lady of
Sorrows is that the elevator entrance (parking lot
level).
I renew my heartfelt thanks to all those who
contributed to the campaign. Their generosity has
helped to realize these important and involved
projects.

Our Saturday morning Mass is now celebrated at Our
Lady of Sorrows Church at 9:00 a.m. not only to
accommodate the Secular Carmelite Community that
is hosted in our parish but also to encourage more
parishioners to attend. The Lenten Season is a great
time to do this. Why not consider attending the 9:00
a.m. Mass on Saturdays as a Lenten resolution?

Catholic Charities Program Subsidy
Catholic Charities, Diocese of Trenton, provides care to
more than 100,000 people each year and touches the
lives of 1 in every 19 residents of Central New Jersey.
Your gift provides funding for use in support of these
programs.

OLS PTA Seeking Donations
Save the date! The OLS PTA’s 5th Annual Knight to
Remember is scheduled for Friday, October 9!
This is a tricky tray style event and through the
generous donations of our school families,
parishioners, and the community at large, we were
able to assemble more than 230 gift baskets to raffle
off last year. All proceeds from this event benefit the
students of Our Lady of Sorrows School.
We are in need of your help once again! Have you
come across items in your closet that you purchased
for gifts but never gave out? Did you get a gift that
you wanted to exchange but never got back to the
store? Why not donate it to our event? We are looking
for new and unused items as well as baskets or
containers (i.e., hat boxes, photo boxes, totes, etc.) to
help create these wonderful gift baskets once again.
Unfortunately, due to the nature of the event we
cannot accept clothing or “gently used” items.
Donations can be dropped off at school’s main office
between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Simply label the
donation “KTR.” Please do not drop off donations at

Reflections on the fourth chapter of Love is Our
Mission: The Family Fully Alive, the catechism on
family life written to help us prepare for the World
Meeting of Families and the anticipated visit from
Pope Francis, follow:
Chapter 4: Two Become One
Our first three chapters reviewed basic Christian faith.
We saw how confidence in Jesus opens the door to
faith, enabling us to know God and what God has
done in history. God creates male and female in his
image, and makes a covenant with Israel and the
Church. God is faithful to his promises, even when we
sin. Because God loved us in this way, we spend our
lives trying to return our love to God and share it with
our neighbor. In this month’s chapter and in the
chapters to come, we will study the implications of
these doctrines for marriage and the family. When
husband and wife promise to love each other as God
loves us all, they make a commitment to love not only
romantically, but also with mercy and forgiveness.
Our culture sometimes teaches us to think of
marriage as a negotiable contract between two
individuals who happen to feel sexual chemistry. This
view of love is a recipe for instability, since it is still
premised on individualism and the waxing and waning
of romantic feelings. The Church’s alternative account
of love enables us to transcend the culture of
individualism and become who we were created to
be. Founded on Christ, sustained in the sacraments,
Catholic marriage builds humility and self-sacrifice
into the dynamic between male and female. As this
month’s chapter explains in more detail, sacramental
marriage creates intimate communion even in times
of suffering and hardship. “Love is our mission,” as
our catechism’s title declares, because Christ’s love
frees us from false, shrunken accounts of love and
makes us fully alive.

The Church of St. Gregory the Great presents Do Not Be
Ashamed of the Gospel: Bearing Moral Witness in the
Public Square, a lecture by Princeton Professor Robert
George, on April 7 at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Center,
4280 Nottingham Way in Hamilton Square.
A year ago, Professor Robert George’s keynote address
at the National Catholic Prayer Breakfast drew national
attention. He challenged Catholics to bear witness boldly
to the sanctity of human life and the conjugal
understanding of marriage, despite the opprobrium that
might come our way for proclaiming these profound but
not-always-welcome moral truths. He will revisit the
main themes of his Prayer Breakfast address in his
lecture at the Church of St. Gregory the Great, exploring
the relationship between the obligation to bear moral
witness and the concepts of Christian discipleship and
the universal call to holiness.
Robert P. George is McCormick Professor of
Jurisprudence and director of the James Madison
Program in American Ideals and Institutions at Princeton
University. He is currently a vice chair of the U.S.
Commission on International Religious Freedom and
holds degrees in law and theology from Harvard
University and a doctorate in philosophy of law from
Oxford University, in addition to many honorary degrees.
He is the author or editor of numerous books in the fields
of constitutional law, ethics, and legal and political
philosophy. Professor George is an internationally
known speaker and TV/radio guest.
Our faith teaches us that Jesus remains present in his
Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity, in the Sacrament that
is reserved in the tabernacle.

A Lenten Program of Sacrifice to Build a Community Center
at Fr. Gene’s Parish, Sacred Heart Church in Tamil Nadu, India
All of us in Our Lady of Sorrows - St. Anthony parish greatly miss Fr.
Eugene Savarimuthu who, after serving our parish with so much love
and enthusiasm for 6 years, has returned to his native India to become
the pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Sikkalnayaganpet parish, a part of
the diocese of Kumbankonam in Tamil Nadu, India. In gratitude, we
have decided to focus this year’s Lenten campaign on helping Fr. Gene
and the people of his new parish.
Sikkalnayaganpet parish is a remote village in southern India. There
is one main church and 5 mission churches which are 6 to 10 miles
away. Fr. Gene is the only priest and offers Mass regularly at all the
churches. The faith of the people is simple but very strong. There are
between 140 to 150 Catholic families in the parish. There are also
approximately 300 Muslim families and almost 1,000 Hindu families.
Fr. Gene says that the conversion to Catholicism is continuing.
Fr. Gene’s parish needs a community center to house many
wonderful programs he has started to help the people of his
parish. Our goal is to help Fr. Gene raise the money needed to
build this community center.
The people of Fr. Gene’s parish are among the poorest of the poor. The Catholics in his village are mainly day workers
who make very little money. Fr. Gene has initiated several programs to help the all the people, Catholics, Muslims and
Hindus alike, and the community center he is building will be where all the programs take place. Right now, these
programs have to be conducted either in the church or outdoors, and this is not even possible during the rainy season.
Some of the programs he has begun include:
YOUTH PROGRAMS: In addition to Catholic faith formation classes, Fr Gene has started evening homework help for
poor students, many of whom have illiterate parents, and job training classes for youth who cannot afford a higher
education
WOMEN SELF HELP GROUPS AND EMPOWERMENT SEMINARS: India is still a male dominant society and women are
sometimes victimized. Fr Gene’s parish offers self help groups and seminars to help women understand their
fundamental rights and obligations and become less dependent.
HYGIENIC AND HEALTH CARE AWARENESS PROGRAMS: In this poor rural village, sanitation is poor and disease is
common. With the help of the Diocesan hospital, Fr. Gene holds medical clinics and seminars to educate the people
on basic sanitation and hygiene.
Give up anything you want for Lent—candy, “fast food”, ice cream, cookies. Each week, calculate how much money
you saved and bring it to church to put in one of the Lenten Labor of Love cans at the exits.
Pray! Pray for Fr Gene, for the people of his parish, and pray that our own hearts will be transformed through our
sacrifices.
