Sleepy Eye ONLINE www.sleepyeyeonline.com [email protected] One Stop Hometown Information Center This made possible thanks to all the wonderful Sleepy Eye ONLINE Sponsors including Goettig & Ruddy Accounting 2005 - Damn Yankees A Little History... Damn Yankees became a cause celebre when it opened on Broadway in 1955 . The show, based on the Faustian legend of a man who sells his soul for what he thinks will make him happy, is replete with appealing tunes, unabashed energy, and timely themes. The writers, Richard Adler and Jerry Ross (also known for another Broadway success, The Pajama Game), adapted their story from the novel The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant by Douglass Wallop. The show played for over 1000 performances on Broadway and earned several honors, including one for Gwen Verdon (who played Lola) and another for Ray Walstron (who starred as Applegate). Now, five decades later, Damn Yankees occupies a paramount place in the history of the American musical genre. It remains the only musical to celebrate baseball, one of our favorite pastimes, while teaching us valuable lessons about communication, love, and enthusiasm for whatever we do. A Codicil: In no way is our production an attempt to debase athletes. Conversely, our musical is a tribute to athleticism, and to anyone, for that matter, who has passion for a noble cause in the “game of life." After all, "you gotta have heart."
