Solaticare was subject to clinical trials in
several European health establishments
and care homes.
The principal trials were conducted in the Tomayerova Hospital in Prague, Czech Republic.
The hospital is a Charles University teaching hospital, the oldest university in Central Europe.
Tomayerova Hospital is a modern, constantly developing health-care center offering
specialized, top-quality medical services while also providing a truly professional environment
for experts in a variety of specialties.
The clinical trials in Tomayerova Hospital were conducted in several departments –
principally traumatology, surgery and geriatric departments – from September to December
2013.
The trials were supervised by a quality auditor accredited by the Czech Institute for
accreditation.
Further trials were conducted in a leading Prague polyclinic Program H plus, and several
home care establishments.
In continuation a selection of most frequent comments on the performance of the Solaticare
system by nurses and patients:
Male patient – 63 years old – partially mobile
Much better than bedpan, after some initial problems with controls I could use Solaticare
on my own without calling nurse, and felt clean afterwards. A little noisy during night.
Woman – 70 years old – partially immobile
I did not like it at the beginning, especially the noise. I could not understand readily the
controls and needed the nurse to help me. Once I learnt how to handle the controls I found
it much preferable to bedpans.
Male patient – 31 years – temporarily immobile – broken leg
I had no problem with controls when instructed by nurse, I much prefer it to bedpan as I do
not require any assistance or handling by nurse – much cleaner altogether.

Solaticare was used on a number of patients in several departments. The majority of patients
found the use of Solaticare much preferable to bedpans and diapers, particularly as regarded
general cleanliness and independence from requirement of nurses’ attendance.
Nurses found Solaticare greatly easier and more hygienic than bedpans and diapers, and very
time saving, especially where patients were able to position themselves and use the controls
without nurses’ assistance.
Younger nurses were more appreciative of the advantages of Solaticare than older ones, who
usually required longer to familiarise themselves with Solaticare use and controls.

I was delighted to be introduced to the Solaticare system by Novamed. It is an innovative
new option to manage elimination for the bed-bound, which puts control where it should be
– back in the hands of the person in bed.
This means there’s no need to find the buzzer, overcoming the embarrassment factor as a
bedpan is requested, waiting for the buzzer to be answered, waiting for a second carer to
arrive, waiting for the right equipment, having an undignified transfer experience, and
finally watching as air freshener is sprayed to complete the experience.
With Solaticare, minimal effort is required, it is always immediately available, dignity is
maintained and odour is minimal. Staff will find this a boon, it allows a single carer to
respond in a timely manner, should assistance be necessary, and it reduces the manual
handling burden. It really has the potential to significantly improve Quality of Life for
appropriate users. It can also reduce the need for expensive disposable containment products.
