Many blame limestone rock for so much
paranormal activity in Alton. Most of
Alton either sits on limestone or has
neighborhoods with houses built with
pieces of limestone. It is this limestone
that is said to retain the psychic residue of
events that can still be experienced today.

Alton's Most
Haunted House...the
notorious McPike
Mansion has been
featured on several
television shows
and investigated
by numerous
paranormal
investigators who
have found the haunting of the McPike Mansion
to be authentic. The house was built in 1869
by architect Lucas Pfeiffenberger. The original
owner of the Mansion was Henry Guest McPike.
The McPike
Mansion is
readily known
today for its
hauntings in
paranormal
circles. The
grounds are
often visited by
ghost hunters
and haunted
tour groups in
the area. It is
not uncommon
to find in photos of the mansion, orbs, balls of
light, even figures appearing in the windows
that were not seen by the human eye when
the photo was taken. This Grand Ole House is
thought to still house many of the spirits that
once lived here. Many Psychics and Mediums
have felt the presence of what they believe to
be McPike family, servants, as well as some of
those who resided in and owned the house
since 1936. The Cellar has been a focal point of
many energies felt in the mansion.

Our Favorite Haunts
FIRST UNITARIAN CHURCH
110 E. Third St.
MINERAL SPRINGS HOTEL
301 E. Broadway St.
MILTON SCHOOL
1320 Milton Road
One of the last places one might expect to
find a ghost is in a church, but there is no
question that something lurks in the shadows
of this historic place. In 1934, the church’s
pastor committed suicide in the building
and if scores of first-hand accounts are to be
believed, he has simply never left. There is no
location more unsettling on our tours, nor one
that has sent as many guests running out of
the building.
Once a magnificent hotel, today it is haunted
primarily by three ghosts. The “drunken ghost”
hangs out in the area that was once the hotel
bar. It’s thought that he painted the mural of
Alton on the wall in exchange for the right
to imbibe while he worked. Another ghost,
the “drowned man,” frequents the pool area,
but he has also been known to manifest in
puddles of water in the hotel lobby. One of the
favorites is the “Jasmine Lady,” who was found
in her hotel room with a lover and murdered
on the staircase by her jealous husband. She
makes her presence known with the sweet
smell of jasmine. With all of the ghosts lurking
about, an investigation of the Mineral Springs
is never a disappointment!
The sinister Milton School begs the question –
can a haunted location be too scary? This
daunting structure with an evil secret is one of
the most active haunts in Alton. The tragic tale
of the school involves the unsolved mystery
of a young girl brutally raped and murdered,
a janitor who committed suicide in the school
and the negativity that can still be felt today.
Only the bravest tourist hopes to encounter
“Charlie.” The Milton School was featured on the
October 2010 Ghost Hunters (TAPS) television
show on the Syfy Channel. The episode,
“Grammar School Ghosts,” included an in-depth
investigation of the very eerie school.

Haunted
Cruises
on the
Mississippi
River
The newest haunted tour is a cruise on a
49-passenger excursion boat from Grafton
River Adventures. This ghostly tour will last
90 minutes with a tour guide pointing out
haunted locations along the Mississippi River
and providing details as to what makes Alton
so haunted. Stories include traumatic events
such as the murder of Elijah Lovejoy, the city
being the home of the old prison that housed
thousands of Confederate soldiers, Alton’s
ties to Al Capone’s boat and more. Tours are
scheduled annually in October.
