RHA Report to Communities May 2015 FINAL
Report to Communities MAY 2015 Board of Directors Chair– Marg MacDonald (Brandon) Vice-Chair– Harry Showdra (Swan River) Sharon Basaraba (Gilbert Plains) Rita Blaikie (Brandon) Dean Dietrich (Neepawa) Barry French (Stockton) Work nearing completion on Swan Valley PCC The Swan Valley Primary Care Centre in Swan River is nearing its construction completion phase. Construction on the $2.6-million dollar project (with renovations to the old McKay Building in Swan River) began back in the Fall of 2014. The reconstruction involved turning the site into a 6,000 square foot facility with exam rooms, treatment rooms, education space and support spaces. There will be 12 exam rooms designed to house six physicians, and three Primary Clinic rooms designed for alternate health care providers to create a ‘health team’ approach for programs and services. There will also be rooms for itinerant (travelling) services and other health team care. The Centre is a key building block towards enhancing the primary care foundation of programs and services within the Swan River Valley. The goal is to improve and expand health care services to Swan River and the surrounding area and to ensure that all residents are connected to a primary care provider. By connecting residents to a primary care provider it is anticipated people will receive timely and more comprehensive care. With the opening of the new centre, PMH also hopes to alleviate patient volume pressures on the Swan Valley Health Centre’s Emergency Room and reduce the number of less-urgent visits to the ER. David Cazakoff, a 2nd year medical student at the University of Saskatchewan, has signed a return of service agreement to establish a medical practice in the Swan Valley when he completes his training. Raising awareness about practice opportunities in the Swan Valley has been a key part of recruiting efforts and various exploratory visits have been organized by RISE and PMH for this purpose. "It was great to meet everyone and see the hospital and new clinic - things in David Cazakoff the Valley are progressing faster than I had realized,” said David Cazakoff. “Returning home has been my goal for several years now, so I'm excited to see that everything will be ready for me to immediately start my practice when I “Returning home has been come, and to know that I will have motivated local colleagues to work and my goal for several years share call with." now, so I'm excited to see “Our community has a long history of commitment to healthcare initiatives that everything will be ready through many different organizations and individuals. RISE's efforts continue in for me to immediately start that spirit,” says Swan Valley RISE Economic Development Officer, Shauna my practice when I come, Klekta. “Working together with PMH has given our community an advantage in our efforts to establish a solid primary care foundation and we need to continue and to know that I will have motivated local colleagues to do everything we can to encourage young physicians to choose the Swan to work and share call with." Valley as a practice location.” Return of service incentives are offered by both PMH and The Swan Valley Health Facilities Foundation (SVHFF). The SVHFF Physician Recruitment and Retention Fund was established locally through contributions from participating municipalities. -David Cazakoff Making the Swan Valley a more attractive practice location for new physicians has been another significant priority for PMH and RISE, and the Primary Care Centre is a great example of how their collaborative efforts have made a difference. “The Primary Care Centre is the first step in our journey to establishing an integrated primary care team model for Swan River area residents,” says Penny Gilson, CEO, Prairie Mountain Health. “We are excited to see it is already attracting the physicians that will bring a renewed, collaborative approach to primary care in Swan River and surrounding area.” Two other future physicians, Tyler Burnside and Savanna McKay, have previously made commitments to establish a medical practice in the Swan Valley upon completion of their training. Recently, close to 40 interviews with Bachelor of Nursing students were conducted with those who expressed an interest in employment with PMH. As a result, 25 total positions were awarded within the region including 16 positions in Brandon and 9 awarded in rural sites (five of the nine were Grad Nurse positions). Local Health Involvement Groups UPDATE The first meetings of the newly-created LHIGs are taking place in May 2015. PMH has three LHIGs established, although it is still optimistic it can attract enough volunteers to form a fourth in the north/north east corner of the Region. PMH is pleased to announce its volunteer members of the new LHIGs. LHIG #1: (Encompasses an area south of Riding Mountain National Park and north of Brandon; and includes communities of Russell, Rossburn, Hamiota, Erickson Minnedosa, Neepawa, Carberry, etc.) Manitoba Start At a recent recruitment fair in Winnipeg, the Region was able to meet with representatives from Manitoba Start– an information and referral initiative for new immigrants. Program representatives arranged an opportunity to connect with 60 new immigrants (some of them that were Internationally-educated nurses) to discuss opportunities in health care outside of Winnipeg. Following the interview process, some 31 letters of offer were provided to applicants. PMH continues to work through the employment process and possible placement of successful applicants. Manitoba eHealth’s 2013/2014 fiscal year utilization report for the MBTelehealth program shows Prairie Mountain Health (PMH) continues to be a leader in using the technology. Western Manitoba Cancer Centre in Brandon was third (1,950) Swan Valley Health Centre in Swan River fourth (1,828) and Brandon Regional Health Centre fifth with (1,365) sessions. Dr. du Plooy, a general practitioner who has specialized training in oncology, has been practicing medicine in Brandon since 1995. He is being recognized by his peers for his commitment to those for whom he cares —including patients, colleagues, trainees and communities at large. Dr. du Plooy says he is humbled and grateful for the recognition. “I consider doing this work a privilege. I currently work with a multidisciplinary team at the Western Manitoba Cancer Centre and have a great deal of help and support from our clerks, nurses, pharmacists, dietitian, social worker, Dr. Moller, Dr. Bashir and CancerCare Manitoba. I’m not able to do any of this alone and without their hard work, my job could not be accomplished,” du Plooy stated. “I have said this before, and will repeat it today, that although cancer is a threatening disease and we use drugs that are often unpleasant for our patients, the treatments can be very effective. Therefore, the mood is not always sombre but more often than that there is relief and joy.” Dr. Shaun Gauthier, Vice-President of Medical Services for Prairie Mountain Health, says Dr. du Plooy is a dedicated, devoted and compassionate physician who is respected by patients, families and colleagues alike. “The contributions Dr. du Plooy has made in the health care field and to family medicine and cancer care in our Region are well-known in Westman and now across the entire Province. We very much appreciate Dr. du Plooy’s expertise, dedication and commitment to Brandon/Westman and PMH region and we’re very pleased that he has been recognized with this prestigious honour,” Gauthier stated. Dr. du Plooy, was born in Zimbabwe and completed his medical training in South Africa. He worked in a family practice clinic in South Africa before emigrating to Canada. He started practicing as a family physician in McCreary, Manitoba in 1986 and moved to Neepawa a few years later. Mental Health Awareness Week is an annual event that takes place during the first week of May to encourage people from all walks of life to learn, talk, reflect and engage with others on all issues of mental health. Prairie Mountain Health is also pleased to partner with the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), and its Parkland Branch in Swan River, with themes and events during the week. CMHA’s main message this year is “getting loud” in support of mental health with a focus on mental health of men and boys. Remember, good mental health isn’t about avoiding problems or trying to achieve a ‘perfect’ life! It is about living well and having the tools for coping with difficult situations even during life’s challenges. Staying mentally healthy is like staying physically fit—it requires a little effort every day!
