PHYSICAL AGILITY EVALUATION
Revised: March 11, 2015
By: Hamilton Fire Department
Hamilton Fire Department.......... PHYSICAL AGILITY EVALUATION
The physical tasks that make up this test are designed to relate directly to
firefighting suppression operations.
Firefighters must have the strength,
agility and endurance to carry and climb ladders, wear and use breathing
apparatus, place and operate hose lines, conduct a rescue and many other
demanding evolutions.
As each of the following job-related tasks represents a minimum standard, all
tasks must be completed successfully within the allotted time limit.
These tasks have been employed for screening applicants, and are valid
requirements of firefighting operations.
Prior to commencing the physical agility evaluation, all applicants must sign a
witnessed Physical Agility Evaluation Consent Form, which acknowledges
that the applicant, to the best of his or her knowledge, is capable of
completing the required job-related tasks, and have no medical conditions that
should restrict them from exerting themselves under the conditions outlined in
the following pages.
Applicants should bring running shoes, loose fitting clothing or other
comfortable attire that is appropriate. We ask that you do not wear
shorts. Applicants will be required to wear firefighter turnout gear (bunker
coat, hard hat, gloves, and 30 minute Self Contained Breathing Apparatus)
which will be provided to them while they are completing the job-related
testing. The applicant will be wearing the Self Contained Breathing Apparatus
to simulate the weight of full turnout gear, which is used on the fireground for
fire suppression operations, and will NOT be required to go on air.
During the evaluation, the examiner(s) have the right to stop the tasks
being performed, if he/she feels that they are being done in an unsafe
manner. When applicants are required to lift or pick up any object,
they shall lift using their legs and not their back. It is also the
applicant's responsibility to notify the examiner to terminate the jobrelated tests if he/she feels any pains, discomforts, fatigue or any
other symptoms during or immediately after the evaluation. The
examiner(s) may also stop the job-related tests upon his/her
observations of any symptoms of distress or abnormal responses, or if
the task performance exceeds a maximum time limit.
Prior to and during the physical agility evaluation, applicants are
encouraged to take the necessary time for warm-up and stretching - to
help avoid any unnecessary muscle strain. Each applicant will be
allowed a maximum of five (5) minutes between events to rest or
stretch.

Task # 1 -- Claustrophobia Test
Wearing a firefighter turnout coat, gloves,
hard hat, and a blackened-out mask, you will
crawl on your hands and knees through a
maze. As you move thru the maze you will
be following the openings in each section by
feeling for the openings with your hand. The
maze will consist of a basic square, whereby
three sides will be closed and one side or
front open. It will also consist of a short
cylindrical tube, and a round opening as well.
You will be monitored by an instructor who
will assist you if you get into difficulty during
the task. The monitor will assist you with
putting on the mask and entering the maze
and upon exiting the maze, the examiner will
tell you to stand and remove your mask.
The applicant must complete this test in less than
six (6) minutes. If the applicant is unable to
complete the test in the required time, removes
his/her mask during the test, or panics while
wearing the mask, the applicant will be classified
as failing the test and all further testing will be
discontinued.

Task # 2 -- Ladder Climb (Applicant to be told
to maintain 3 point contact when climbing)
Wearing a firefighter turnout coat, gloves,
safety belt and rope, you will climb up to the
top of the ladder and touch the ladder tip
with both hands. (The examiner will assist

the applicant's waist).
After reaching the
tip, proceed down the ladder three rungs
where you will be instructed by the examiner
to take a leg lock.
The leg lock will be
demonstrated to the group by one of the
examiners before the testing begins. Once
the examiner is satisfied that the leg lock has
been completed correctly you will then be
instructed to remove both your hands from
the ladder and lean backwards.
After
completing this evolution you will be
instructed to release your leg lock and
proceed down the ladder to the ground.
The applicant must complete this test in less than
five (5) minutes. If the applicant is unable to
complete the test in the required time, or panics
while climbing the ladder the applicant will be
classified as failing the test and all further testing
will be discontinued.

line. Upon direction for the examiner, you
will return the ladder to its position on the
apparatus bracket.
Dragging the ladder during the test results in
a failure.
The applicant must complete this test in less than
four (4) minutes. If the applicant is unable to
complete the test in the required time, or is
