Volunteer
Firefighter
The North Grenville Fire Service is comprised of our full time Fire Chief, a
Fire Prevention Officer, an Administrative Assistant and 40 volunteer
firefighters operating from the fire station at 259 County Road 44. We
serve the 160 square miles of the municipality as well as providing fire
protection services to neighbouring municipalities through Mutual Aid
Agreements.
To be considered a candidate for volunteer firefighter, applicants must live
or work near the fire station. Candidates who work near the station but do
not live in the area must be able to leave work to attend emergencies in
order to quality to become a volunteer firefighter.
A firefighter`s primary goal is to protect lives and to save property. This
requires them to respond to calls for emergency assistance which may
include fires, medical emergencies, motor vehicle accidents, water/ice
rescue and hazardous materials incidents.
Training is an essential part of being an effective firefighter. In addition to
undergoing an initial 120-hour recruit training course, each member is
expected to attend a minimum of six to eight hours of training per month
once recruit training is successfully completed. There are also numerous
specialty training opportunities held at various locations and times during
the year.
In addition to emergency response and training, volunteer firefighters
participate in local fairs and festivals, Muscular Dystrophy fund raising and
other public relation activities.
Taking on the challenge of becoming a volunteer firefighter requires a
significant commitment but the experience of being an active member
within your community is also most rewarding.
