QAS Technology Committee - Objectives
The QAS Technology Planning Committee was formed in October 2012 to
conduct extensive research on best practice school technology
deployments, assess our current strengths/weaknesses and develop a
proposed roll-out plan for the school.
Committee Composition
TEACHERS – Gordy Malis (Computer Lab), Morgan Fair, Amy Fritz
PARENTS – Jeff Langfels (I.T. Professional), David Blanchard
SCHOOL COUNCIL – Peter Tantillo (Principal), Jeff Kirchner (Telecom/I.T.)
Objective
Develop a strategic five-year technology plan for the school
Use research findings to drive plan (foundational element)
Establish criteria to prioritize recommended strategic, systematic roll-out across school
Implausible and ineffective for “all at once” school-wide roll out
Engage select faculty to serve as early adopters and lead initial phase roll out
Roll-in additional faculty during implementation of subsequent proposed phases
Work to identify funding (incremental, existing) needed to implement
recommendations

Performed Tasks
Conduct extensive research to inform plan strategy
Meet with schools, teachers, industry experts to understand best practices and incorporate
them into the QAS plan
Identify roadblocks to success
Benchmark analysis of “competitive” schools
Identify near-term technology issues (e.g. internet connection) and raise their
visibility
Develop objectives and criteria for deploying technology in the school
Identify the strategy to meet the objectives
Estimate the cost to fund the requirements over time
Identify potential sources for funding (e.g. alumni, grants, other)
Develop a technology-related communication plan, as it relates to the QAS Parent
Survey, and integrated with the broader survey communication plan

Technology Committee Research Findings
Technology committee conducted extensive research on best practice school
technology deployments throughout the 2012-2013 school year
Extensive, year-long fact finding mission
Spoke with other schools, Archdiocese, industry experts
Sacred Heart (Winnetka), Immaculate Conception (Norwood Park), St. Mary’s
(Lake Forest), St. Benedicts (Chicago / Irving Park Rd), St. Clements, St. Mary of
the Woods, Sauganash, Edgebrook, Morton Grove Public
Topline Key Learnings:
For best adoption, must be teacher lead, not mandated from the administration
Engaged and excited teachers serve as role model, inspiration for colleagues
to implement in their classrooms
If teachers “required” – creativity will suffer, risks will not be taken
It’s not all about devices. Without a thoughtful deployment plan with robust
teacher training, technical support and integrated applications, many
deployments fail and devices go unused
“Start small and build up. . .Start small with a few interested teachers, get
them excited about using it [technology] . .and get them to draw in other

lags neighboring schools significantly

Plan Development Background
Consulted with Chris Haruska, Director of Technology, Office of Catholic
Schools, Archdiocese of Chicago
Presented committee’s comprehensive research findings to faculty during
in-service day
Tapped faculty to create and submit classroom technology integration
plans (see slide 15 for selected plan specifics).
Teacher requested in-class technology is key to successful integration and
consistent usage.
Teacher plans reviewed by committee to determine which to include in
first round of proposed implementation
Teacher plans prioritized based on the following criteria:
Greatest impact across student body
Comprehensive, achievable plan

investment to date, and progress in device deployment to
classrooms
• Show (10) examples of technology used in differentiated

• Communicate all of the above in the Parish Bulletin, Men’s
Club, QASPA, Women’s Auxiliary, Finance Council, QAS
