Free-Response Directions: Question 1 is a long free
Free-Response Directions: Question 1 is a long free-response question that should require about 20 minutes to answer. Questions 2 through 4 are short free-response questions that should require about 6 minutes each to answer. Read each question carefully and write your response. Answers must be written out. Outline form is not acceptable. It is important that you read each question completely before your begin to write. 1. The movement of water through vascular plants is important to their survival. (a) Explain the mechanism of water movement through vascular plants during transpiration. Include a discussion of how the anatomy of vascular plants and the properties of water contribute to this process. (b) Explain how gas exchange affects transpiration. (c) Describe TWO adaptations that affect the rate of transpiration in desert plants. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ GO ON THE NEXT PAGE (1) Test Questions are Copyright © 1984-2012 by College Entrance Examination Board, Princeton, NJ. Many biological structures are composed of smaller units assembled into more complex structures having functions based on their structural organization. For the mature angiosperm root, describe the smaller units, their assembly into larger structures, and one major function of these larger, organized structures. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ GO ON THE NEXT PAGE. Angiosperms (flowering plants) have wide distribution in the biosphere and the largest number of species in the plant kingdom. Mosses (bryophytes) have not achieved the widespread terrestrial success of angiosperms. Discuss how the anatomy and reproductive strategies of mosses limit their distribution. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ GO ON THE NEXT PAGE. The initial masses of six groups of potato cores were measured. The potato cores were placed in sucrose solutions of various molarities. The masses of the cores were measures again after 24 hours. Percent changes in mass were calculated. The results are shown below. Molarity of Sucrose in Beaker 0.0 M 0.2 M 0.4 M 0.6 M 0.8 M 1.0 M Percent Change in Mass 18.0 5.0 −8.0 −16.0 −23.5 −24.0 Graph these data on the axes provided. From your graph, find the apparent molar concentration (osmolarity) of the potato core cells. What are the components of water potential, and why is water potential important for the movement of water in plants? ______________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________ (1) Test Questions are Copyright © 1984-2012 by College Entrance Examination Board, Princeton, NJ.
