Return of the Quod to Rottnest Island Authority
The Quod when returned to the RIA at the completion of the Karma Resort construction currently
scheduled for 2016/ 17 will become the entry point to the Burial Ground under the approved Section
18 works for the Burial Ground.
In line with the RAP the RIA will work closely with Aboriginal consultative groups, in particular the
South West Aboriginal Land and Sea Council, to provide advice on ongoing development and
implementation of the RIA’s Reconciliation Action Plan, as well as providing advice to the RIA on
issues and projects on Rottnest (Wadjemup) that are of particular relevance such as the Quod.
The Quod will not be used for accommodation. The intention is to ensure that the Aboriginal history
of Rottnest Island is appropriately interpreted for today’s visitors, and the State’s Aboriginal
community.
The first stage of the upgrade of the Burial Ground as per the approved Section 18 will commence in
2015 and is consistent with the 2014- 19 approved Rottnest Island Management Plan. A concept
plan has been developed as a discussion document and starting point for funding, currently being
sought by the Rottnest Foundation.
Reflection spaces

Seating areas adjacent to the gravesite allowing for quiet reflection.

Food / medicinal plants pertinent to representative tribal groups to be planted within quokka-proof
enclosures.
Entrance lookout and shelter

Interpretation entry structure accessible from Quod and Kitson Streets to provide shade and
shelter.

Rammed earth walling to be incorporated using earth collected from the various parts of Country.

Structure to act as the main gateway to the site having prominence within the heritage precinct
and being adjacent to the Quod.

Minor interpretive elements to be within entry shelter.

Major interpretive elements to be located in Quod.

A flagpole and light to be installed at entrance.
General

Continuous line of stone edging to gravesites using small limestone rocks from the Island,
denoting known extent of burial site.

Tuart trees to be selectively pruned to remove dead wood.

Exotic trees with no relevance to Aboriginal groups to be removed from site.

Planting of Melaleuca lanceolata and Callitris preissli around perimeter of site.
