Deerpath Golf Course Junior Academy Director & Lead Coach
Richard Franklin is in his 5th year as Deerpath Golf Course's Director of
Instruction and junior golf specialist. After a 5 year stint as a full time
playing professional Richard drew his attention toward helping the next
generation of golfers reach their full potential. Through his countless
experience and research in the fields of both biomechanically based golf
instruction and Olympic- style holistic coaching, Richard has created a junior
golf program that represents a fundamental shift in how golf is being taught. "I have always had an
immense passion for the game. Golf has given me so much and I wake up everyday trying to give my
students the same gift", says Richard. "It is my sole objective to create an environment at Deerpath Golf
Course that fosters personal growth through fun and exploration of this great game. We are amongst
other things "gamifying" the 10,000 hour rule. (10,000 hours of deliberate practice is seen as a
universally accepted prerequisite for genius level attainment of a given skill set) We utilize science
supported research to scale every environment and growth benchmark to the biological age of each of
our players. We have a long term development model in place that will spark an intrinsic motivation to
accept golfs myriad challenges and rewards. I am ecstatic about what is on the horizon for the many
juniors involved in our program. "

Where do private lessons fit into the mix?
Private Lessons can be an essential piece of a juniors development. The golf
swing is a very complex motor pattern and private lessons are able to give
the coach 1 on 1 time to reinforce what is learned in class or to cover a new
area. The coaches can then provide additional feedback during the weekly
classes and supervised practice as well that supplement the private lessons.

Why shouldn't we only do private lessons?
Private lessons are essential for players serious about getting better, but
group training is incredibly important for the juniors to learn and compete
with other junior golfers. The group environment is where the junior can
test his skills, make new friends and really develop a love for the game!

The Study Hall for Junior Golfers
Supervised Practice sessions take the traditional practice session to
another level. This is an organized time where juniors can take what
they have learned in the weekly classes and develop the skills under
the watchful eye of a junior coach. It is during this time that the
coaches will train juniors "how" to practice properly using the
"Blocked, Random, Performance Framework". By learning how to
properly practice we can accelerate your juniors skill development
and help make them independent golfers.

Understanding your Junior Program Options
First thing. There are some changes to
the program this year..
The main change for the 2015 schedule is that there will be 2 "tracks" for junior golfers (8 and
older) to take. All golfers in the 5-7 year old age range will enroll in our Spark Golf Program. The
two tracks are the Academy Track and the G.F.L "Golf For Life Track. The academy track differs
from the G.F.L. track in that it geared toward golfers whos ultimate objective is to shoot 36 or
better for 9 holes. In accordance with that end goal, the academy program will feature benchmark
skill and playing tests and use a 12 skill badge curriculum over the course of 6 levels ( see PAGES
12-14 for more detail) . Academy students will also comprise our travelling golf team in 6 events
per season (6 Fall, 6 Spring) and will have mandatory Saturday supervised practice and a minimum
amount of individual practice hours per week. The G.F.L track will b very similar to the 2014 junior
program. It will feature the same progressive, age appropriate lesson structure, as well as bimonthly inter program tournaments.

180 mph driver ball speed is world class production and alongside
relative accuracy would go a long way to making a successful
competitive golfer. Although concentration on this one parameter is
not the goal of this coaching plan it speaks to the ethos of a coaching
model striving for nothing less than elite performance. Team 180
coaching represents an Olympic style, holistic program that leaves
not stone un- turned and offers uncompromising support to its team.
Members of TEAM 180 will have every aspect of their games
measured , analyzed, and improved upon through a rigorous and
systematic blueprint. Players can expect a complete inspection of
equipment, skill set benchmarking, playing aptitude, physical fitness
and nutrition, mental game strategies, and most importantly
competitive play perfomance.

G.F.L "Golf For Life" (After School Golf)
$695 Per Semester
Ages 8- 16
Child development models point to the age range most featured in the G.F.L program (ages 8-13) as "sampling years".
During this time frame it extremely important that children get exposed to environments that foster self exploration
and ultimately growth. The G.F.L program sets out to balance the inexact science of "play" with a mindful focus on the
progression towards specific golf goals.
The alchemy behind golf aptitude is (amongst other things) a complex mixture of connection and engagement to the
sport, deliberate practice, non - deliberate play, self efficacy, and consequently the calcification of skill. This track is
designed to set the all- important foundation that must be present for later skill development.
The G.F.L. After School Golf Program consists of 2(2)
hour group sessions per week for the 6 week Spring
and Fall Semesters

How does it work?
1
Juniors will receive the Level 1 Skills
Kit. Inside are learning materials that
lay out challenges the juniors needs
to be able to demonstrate to earn 12
Skill Badges for each Skill Kit Level.
2
Some of the challenges require that
the golfer records data or completes
a specific written activity. They are
noted by a ?Workbook Icon? and can
be found in the Tag Level Workbook.
3
The coaches teach specific badges
during class each week using fun
activities and games. Each program
will progress through the curriculum
at different rates due to age.
4
The golfer can practice what they
have learned outside of class until
they master the skill. They will then
come to class during the ?testing
time?, and demonstrate to coach. If
completed successfully, the junior
will earn their Skills Badge? !
5
The junior will go home and tell
parents, who will issue the Poster
Badge? from the Parent Envelope.
PARENT ENVELOPE
6
Once all 12 Badges are earned on the
bag tag the junior will proceed to the
next level and receive a new skills kit.
The Operation 36 Skill Badges
The Op 36 Skill Badges provide a motivating benchmarks to advance junior golfers
Posture Badge
The Posture Badge contains the skills and
knowledge the golfer needs to be able to
demonstrate a consistent powerful golf
swing. We start by giving the basics of
posture in the setup. As the golfer
progresses through the levels they will
learn how to maintain their posture
dynamically while swinging the golf club.
Ball Flight Badge
The Ball Flight badge contains the technical
skills and knowledge our golfera needs to
demonstrate to be able to use the club
efficiently to execute a golf shot. These
skills teach the golfer how to execute
different types of shots and cover the
basics of controlling the club face and club
path through impact.
Green Reading
The Green Reading Badge contains all of
the knowledge and skills the junior needs
to demonstrate to become a master green
reader! The kids learn basic to complex
green reading skills that teach them exactly
how to predict how the ball is going to roll
to make them a master putter.
Mastery Badge
The Mastery badge contains the
information the golfers need to learn to
master the sport. This badge not only
teaches the kids how to learn and not fear
mistakes, but covers many areas important
to master the game such as keeping score,
parts of the club, parts of the golf course,
golf lingo and much more.
Power Badge
The Power Badge contains all of
the skills and knowledge the golfer needs
to be able to hit the golf bar far. We believe
it is important to know how to hit the ball a
reasonable distance to make the game
enjoyable! We teach the most important
technical skills and fundamentals first to
give our golfers the the best chance to hit
the ball far!
Alignment Badge
The Alignment Badge gives our
golfers a solid base for understanding how
important learning to align at their target is.
Alignment is very important to be as
efficient as possible. Once the golfer
progresses through the first few levels we
begin to cover how to change the
alignments to influence different types of
ball flight.
Performance
The Performance Badge sets scoring and
practice benchmarks for the golfer. This
badge teaches the junior how to constantly
challenge themselves during practice and
playing to improve. Level 6 Black Tags must
shoot par or better to earn this badge!
Honor Badge
The Honor badge contains all the
knowledge and experiences the golfers
need to learn to understand the history and
how to play the game. This badge requires
research of legends and current players,
and covers the rules and etiquette of the
sport as well. This badge also teaches the
most important life & character traits.
Grip Badge
The Grip Badge contains the technical skills
and knowledge the golfer needs to
demonstrate to master the grip. The grip is
not only the closest connection the golfer
has with the club face, but it is essential to
have a proper grip to allow the golf club to
swing properly.
Putting Badge
The Putting Badge contains all of the
technical skills and knowledge the golfer
needs to demonstrate to become a master
putter! The putter is one of the most
important tools in the golfers bag. It is
designed to get the ball in the hole. This
badge teaches the golfer how to use the
putter efficiently to get the ball in the hole!
Work Ethic Badge
The Work Ethic badge teaches the
golfer that it takes time and practice to
become skilled at the sport. This badge sets
outside practice session benchmarks for the
juniors as well as helps them understand
what tees they should be playing when
they are on the golf course. Learning the
proper way to practice is essential for the
juniors to become scratch golfers.
Health & Fitness
The Health & Fitness badge contains sports
nutrition education & fitness benchmarks
to help instill an athletic base for our
golfers. We use a custom benchmark
system to challenge the golfers to improve
their fitness and compliment it with sports
and general nutrition education to not only
make golfers, but athletes in the process!
