The President Speaks
My dear friends in Rotary
Sometimes I really wonder whether all our RCBS Rotarians take
the trouble to read the Solar Weekly Newsletter. Beside our weekly
Newsletter, every month we also receive “The Rotarian” magazine from
Rotary International, furthermore with today’s advancement in Hi- Tech
communication “Our Club weekly newsletter, we can download in our
club website by just a ‘Click’ “. How many of us really take time to
browse the “Search Engine” and explore this marvelous technology?
How many of us read our weekly newsletter or the Rotarian Magazine
from page one till the end?
I am sharing this with you since the month of April in the Rotary
Calendar is designated to be ‘Magazine Month’. Learning is forever.
According to Guinness Book of Records, the oldest officially recognized pupil was 90 years
old. His name was Kimani Nganga Marugi, a great grandfather who never had the opportunity
to attend school in his poverty – stricken village until he reached the age of 84. At that time,
Kenya instituted Free Schooling in Primary Schools, according to BBC News, Kimani was
anxious to learn how to read and do Mathematics, so he could read the Bible and keep track of
his small pension. He became the oldest person ever to enroll in a Primary School.
Moving on, we had our 8th Edition of Kitchen Bundle on 29th March 2015 where 30 single
mothers received groceries. I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to all the sponsors
and also to OC Rtn Naga, IPP Sandra, PP Susan, Rtn Puveen and Rtn John’s spouse, Lucy for
participating in this project.
On 15th April, Rotaract Club of Sunway University will have their Charter Nite during our
regular meeting. This Rotaract Club has been sponsored by RCBS. I have officially received the
Charter Certificate and Rotaract materials from Rotary International.
Our next important event is our club’s 22nd anniversary which is only 3weeks away. I strongly
urge all members to attend this anniversary celebration. Kindly RSVP your attendance for this
event latest by 8th April 2015 for catering purposes.
The future of Rotary is in your hands and it will help to bridge continents to build better
communities.
Have a magnificent week ahead.
'Light Up Rotary'
Regards,
Xavier

Rotaract Clubs attend Dist 300 Rotaract Assembly
We, the members of the incoming committee of the Rotaract Club of Sunway University feel that we have
been learned a lot from attending the District Rotaract Assembly. During our interaction with other senior
Rotaractors, we were exposed to various scenarios and difficult situations that a Rotaract Club may face
and possibly how these could be handled.
The DRA has enlightened us tremendously on the proper procedures and preventive actions to take for
when the new term begins. We had a lot of fun as well, building new relationships with other Rotaractors.
We have come to better appreciate the importance of maintaining healthy relationship between members
of our club and other clubs. We can look forward to more joint activities that would better serve the needs
of our communities.
Rotaractors from RAC Bandar
Sunway and RAC Sunway University after completing the Amazing
Race at the District Rotaract Assembly
The organising committee members of the DRA were very approachable, there was great camaraderie and
the food was really good! :) All in all it was an amazing experience during the 31st Amazing DRA.

DIST 3300 CROSSES THE USD 300,000 MARK IN TOTAL
GIVINGS TO THE ROTARY FOUNDATION FOR 2014-15
We have breached the USD 300,000 mark in our total givings for the Rotary year for 2014-15.
In the last few days, there has been a flurry of contributions from clubs around the district with
the deadline of 31st March looming for the clubs to meet their EREY requirements. From what I
see, some of the contributions made are still not shown on the club recognition summaries of
the respective clubs yet, and I am hopeful when they are in and when the remaining clubs
make their givings in the next few days, we should touch a much higher level in our
contributions.
The number of clubs contributing to Annual Fund- Share has now increased to 62 out of 76
(82%) with RC Port Dickson and RC Seri Changkat Jong becoming the latest clubs to join in the
list of contributors and I hope the remaining 14 clubs will join in this team effort. Clubs that
have not reached their EREY or per capita targets have still time to do so provided they do it
online and do it before 31st March. Please do not wait any longer.
The annual fund is now at USD 257,761, Polio USD 39,118, Endowment fund USD4100 and
the total giving is currently USD 300,979.

Korean sailor makes waves for End Polio Now
Enjoying calm winds and peaceful
Pacific waters, Seung Jin Kim dove
off his 43-foot sailboat, the Arapani,
to swim with some dolphins nearby.
The serenity that day near the
equator was a stark contrast to the
60 mph winds and 23-foot waves he
had to fight around Cape Horn, the
southern tip of South America. But
Kim, a veteran sailor and member of
the Rotary Club of Seokmun, in
Chungcheongnam, Korea, expected
such challenges when he set out in
mid-October on a 25,600-mile journey around the world. In addition to fulfilling a lifelong dream, Kim is
using the trip to raise awareness and funds -- his goal is $200,000 or more -- for Rotary's End Polio Now
campaign.
He's now more than halfway through the voyage, which is expected to take eight months. As of 23 March,
he'd passed South Atlantic and is now in the middle of the Indian Ocean en route to Western Australia.
"I want to give people the belief and aspiration to create a better and more prosperous future," says Kim,
who chose Sailing With Hope as the theme of his voyage. "Rotary is doing that with polio eradication, so
I'm sailing around the world in support of the effort to wipe this disease from the face of the earth. I want
people to know how close we are."
To spread the word, the Arapani carries a 68-foot mast whose sail is emblazoned with the End Polio Now
logo. He hopes people who see the logo will be curious enough to look into his cause.
While he is in daily contact via satellite phone with his support team, which includes Korean Rotary
members, he acknowledges that the solitary aspect of the journey is difficult. "The toughest part of this
trip was the moment I realized I was all by myself in the middle of the ocean. A sullen feeling of
loneliness suddenly invaded me," says Kim.
Kim, who expects to return to Korea in late May, will have crossed the Pacific, Antarctic, Atlantic, and
Indian oceans.
He says the things he's most looking forward to are a home-cooked meal and being able to sleep under
the same roof as his family. But he's already anticipating setting sail again. "I want to do this again, he
says, "but with young sailors who have the same dream of sailing around the world."
Kim's journey is sponsored by 18 districts in Korea. The day he set off, Korean Rotary members posted
poems, inspirational words, and photos around the marina. "I am so grateful for [the members'] support
and encouragement. They are a wonderful inspiration for me," says Kim.
Sun-Hyung Cho, governor of District 3620 and part of the support team, says the district's Rotary
members are closely following Kim's progress.

Over dinner one evening, a wife says to her husband,
"I met this horrible and rude man downtown this
morning, and right away I knew he was a troublemaker. He started to insult me. He used really bad language. He even threatened me!"
"How did you meet this fellow?" her husband asked,
very concerned.
"Well," she says, "we met by accident. I ran into his
wheelchair with the car."

And I say to you: Use your gifts. Use them thoughtfully, use them wisely, use them generously.
Use them so that the girls who now sit at home will walk proudly next year to school.
Use them so that the fields that are now barren for want of irrigation will grow next spring, green with
agriculture.
Use them to break the cycle of poverty, lift up the destitute, and give the gift of hope to all those who live in
the margins of society.
