The Shell Malaysia Sustainable Development (SD) Grants seeks to assist Malaysia-based NGOs, local academic institutions, the community and individuals in executing their SD initiatives with a focus on two main areas - environmental conservation and sustainable livelihood. Projects are selected based on practicality, its direct benefits, financial need, sustainability, and originality by an independent panel of judges. The 2015-cycle SD Grant beneficiaries are: Environmental Conservation Projects to conserve biodiversity, natural resources and ecosystems; including forests, wetlands, mangroves, coral reefs, peat swamps. These projects may be terrestrial, marine, estuarine, freshwater or aerial in nature. 1. Organisation: Project title: Grant amount: Objective: Blue Life ecoservices Ltd, Sabah Fishing for litter – recycling of marine plastic litter through social enterprise “Clean Coast Rangers Mantanani” RM60,000 To establish a permanent organised management system for marine plastic litter as well as waste on Mantanani Island’s coastlines and beaches. 2. Organisation: Project title: Grant amount: Objective: Community Environmental Awareness for Our River (CLEAR), Sabah Conserving the Moyog River RM60,000 The conservation of the Moyong river through educating the youths and creating awareness for community leaders through environmental actions. 3. Organisation: Project title: Grant amount: Objective: SK Bukit Damansara Rainwater Harvesting RM35,000 Design and build a rainwater harvesting system on school grounds to channel excess waters to the school garden, for sporting activities, and also to prevent flooding in the school. 4. Organisation: Project title: Grant amount: Objective: Malaysian Nature Society (Miri Branch), Sarawak Reef check at the Miri-Sibuti Marine Protected Area RM27,960 To conduct eco-diving training for local divers, to conduct annual reef checks at 6 Miri dive sites, as well as to hold public awareness talks. 5. Organisation: Project title: Grant amount: Objective: SMK Bandar Utama Damansara (3) Eco Living With Aquaculture Pond RM10,000 To conserve water run-off during the monsoon season and reduce water usage as way to inculcate awareness of water conservation amongst students. 6. Organisation: Project title: Grant amount: Objective: ENACTUS, Universiti Utara Malaysia, Kedah Charcos RM8,000 Helping farmers become environmentally friendly entrepreneurs by converting agricultural waste to valuable products, in order to reduce air pollution from coconut shell burning. Organisation: Project title: Grant amount: Objective: SK Damansara Jaya 2, Kuala Lumpur Rainwater Harvesting and Environmental Showcase (Phase 3) RM5,900 To conserve water run-off during the monsoon and reduce water usage, ultimately inculcating a culture of water conservation amongst students. Sustainable Livelihood Projects to develop the poor/community livelihood through capacity building. 1. Organisation: Project title: Grant amount: Objective: Blue Life ecoservices Ltd, Sabah Aquaponic and home gardens for better livelihood RM40, 000 To develop home gardens and a Multi-trophic Aquaponic Greenhouse for the inhabitants of the remote Mantanani Island. 2. Organisation: Project title: Grant amount: Objective: Tatana Roots Community, Sabah Dusun Tatana RM40, 000 To document and preserve the cultural and natural heritage of the indigenous Dusun people group in Sabah. 3. Organisation: Project title: Borneo Ecotourism Solutions & Technologies Society (BEST Society), Sabah Community Participation in Sustainable Organic Agriculture at Kampung Rampai Besar, Kudat, Sabah RM 40,000 To empower the local Rungus communities living in the indigenous villages through capacity building. The project encourage their active involvement in developing sustainable organic agriculture to promote healthy diets and explore alternative livelihoods (Phase 2).
