Newsletter No 13 â 8 May 2015 - South African College High School
8 May 2015 NEWSLETTER NO. 13 Dear Parents Welcome back after the two long weekends. As I mentioned to the boys, in assembly on Monday, we need to regain momentum very quickly if we are to overcome the academic, cultural and sporting challenges posed in the next few weeks. SACS–BISHOPS DERBY This weekend we are hosted by Bishops for our hockey and rugby fixtures. The rivalry that exists between two of South Africa’s great schools is a very healthy one and the rugby fixture is the oldest schoolboy fixture in the world. In fact, the first rugby match played on the hallowed turf of Newlands, was a match between SACS and Bishops. All of us (boys, staff, parents, coaches and Old Boys) are privileged to be a part of such an historic rivalry. As such, it is incumbent on us all to enjoy the occasion and pay it the respect it deserves. Bishops have honoured SACS by inviting their oldest friends and rivals to play the first hockey fixtures at the opening of their magnificent Woodlands Complex (encompassing a re-vamped Astroturf, Old Boys offices, function rooms and pavilion). We have accepted their wonderful gesture and thank Mr Guy Pearson (Headmaster) and the Bishops community for this privilege. We look forward to a wonderful weekend of schoolboy sport. ROWING CANOEING Congratulations to Daniel Loubser and Adam Begg who were awarded Silver medals in the U16 quad race, while representing Western Province at the South African National Rowing Championships on Sunday 26 April at Roodeplaat, Pretoria. Congratulations to Uli Hart who was awarded seven gold and one silver medal, while participating in the South African Schools’ Canoe Championships this past weekend at Roodeplaat, Pretoria. He was also awarded the U14 South African Victor Ludorum trophy. MYSCHOOL MATRIC NATIONAL BENCHMARK TESTS (NBT) Thank you to all parents who are using their MySchool cards for purchases. Our monthly school-pack transactions and funds raised for April are as follows: As you are aware, all matrics applying to universities are required to write the National Benchmark tests prior to admission. Applicants are required to organize these tests online and must meet the costs of writing the NBTs. For further information, please visit www.nbt.uct.ac.za or telephone 0216503523. The NBTs must be written by 11 October 2015. Our records show that your organisation has raised R9, 763.83 this month, against R8, 293.42 last month. 528 supporters raised funds for your school this month, whilst 511 supporters used their MySchool card to support you last month. Boys will not be given time off school time or be allowed to miss Saturday fixtures to write these tests as there are many options available to them, including Sundays and school holidays. Yours sincerely K. R.
