TEEN ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERSHIP ACADEMY
July 20-31, 2015
AN INVITATION
Do you like getting outside in the hills, exploring nature, working in gardens? Would you like
to make the world a more beautiful place? Would you like to learn how to relax and let go of
stress?
If you answered yes, the Teen Environmental Leadership Academy (TELA) is for you! TELA
is a two-week summer program for youth who live in the Canal, and nearby neighborhoods.
The Academy will meet 9:00 to 3:30, Monday through Friday, July 21 through August 1: ten
days of mindfulness training, outdoor education, leadership development, and service.
Exploring . . .
With the Huckleberry Youth Services in the Montecito Plaza in San Rafael as our home base,
we will venture out to local parks and gardens such as Green Gulch, Pt. Reyes, and the
redwoods. We will also explore the natural beauty right here in our home neighborhood.
Service work will include tending gardens that we visit.
Learning . . .
Instructors will show you plants and animals of Marin County, how to take care of vegetables
that you can grow for yourself, the hidden costs of throw-away society, how to speak
confidently in front of a group, and how to approach it all with an open mind and peaceful
spirit.
Becoming a leader . . .
Leadership begins with knowing
who you are. Through mindful
practice and cultural awareness,
you can set high goals for
yourself and become a steward of
the community. The Academy
will include workshops on key
skills for effective leadership:
planning together, listening to
others, preparing persuasive
speeches, and cultivating inner
peace.
TO GET INVOLVED
Tuition is $500 for the two weeks (vegetarian lunch included.
This program has been funded grants from the Foundation for Sustainability & Innovation, the
Marin Community Foundation, the Penney Family Fund, the Rose Foundation and other
generous individuals.
ABOUT GREEN SANGHA
Green Sangha is an environmental action organization founded by Fairfax teacher and
therapist Jonathan Gustin in 2000. Our mission is to restore our sense of oneness, healing our
communities and the earth through mindful practice and awakened action.
Green Sangha provides practical, hands-on solutions to global issues through education, civic
advocacy, and the promotion of sustainable lifestyle choices starting from within. We are
local, grassroots, and making a difference in our communities. Our actions include coastal
clean-up days, habitat restoration and tree planting at Green Gulch Farm, Mindful Activism
training, and the Rethinking Plastics campaign, which has saved tons of plastic from getting
into the environment.
TELA expresses our enthusiasm about the next generation of leaders and our hope for a
sustainable world. Through the inspiration of youth and the wisdom of ancient traditions, a
better world is being born.
