Remediation of failing course grades is a privilege subject to approval of the Director of
Physician Assistant Studies. The Physician Assistant Student Performance Committee (PASPC)
shall serve as a resource regarding the establishment of remediation requirements and
conditions. Remediation activities should be targeted at achieving academic equivalency to the
original course or curriculum activities. Consideration should be given to planned curriculum
changes and availability of remediation resources. Only remediated credit hours and grades
shall be used when computing a student’s grade point average (GPA) for purposes of
determining retention, probation, and/or eligibility for graduation.
Application
All students enrolled in the Master of Physician Assistant Studies program.
Definitions.
1. Academic Probation. “Academic probation” serves as notice that the student’s
continued enrollment is in jeopardy due to poor academic performance.
2. Dismissal. “Dismissal” means the student is no longer eligible to attend courses in the
MPAS curriculum. A dismissed student is not eligible for graduation.
3. Good Standing. “Good standing” means the student is meeting requirements for
completion of the curriculum. A student on probation cannot be in good standing.
4. Remediation. “Remediation” means activities designed to remedy a failed course grade
or correct academic deficiencies.
5. Promotion. “Promotion” means advancement in the curriculum.
Procedures and Responsibilities.
1. The Physician Assistant Student Performance Committee (PASPC) may be called
upon to recommend a remediation plan to alleviate failed course grades or to raise a
student’s cumulative grade point average to required minimums. When crafting a
remediation plan, the PASPC is expected to suggest the general nature and scope of
remediation in accordance with the above statement. Remediation activities may
include, but will not be limited to, administration of a comprehensive equivalency
examination, repeating of a course or courses, auditing additional course or courses
in the curriculum, additional testing, and/or other activities deemed necessary to
show learning has occurred. For example, a student required to remediate a failed
supervised clinical practice experience (i.e., clinical rotation) may be required to
repeat additional didactic work and/or clinical experiences to assure the required
competencies have been achieved.

2. Any student being considered for remediation should be afforded an opportunity to
provide written or oral support (rationale) for their remediation. The PASPC is
expected to consider the individual student’s entire record of performance in the PA
program when determining the feasibility and applicability of a remediation plan.
The PASPC is not be obligated to provide a remediation plan when it concludes
remediation will not lead to overall success in the program.

3. All remediation activities are subject to approval by the Director of PA Studies.

4. Approval to remedy failing performance shall depend on evidence that
demonstrates the student has made prior serious efforts to earn passing grades.
Student behaviors demonstrating serious efforts to earn passing grades include, but
will not be limited to:






Attending scheduled classes, review sessions, and scheduled course activities
Seeking help from faculty during the regular offering of the course
Participating in class, laboratory and small group activities
Making serious attempts to develop effective study skills
Notifying course director(s) and faculty of their learning difficulties
Attending help/tutoring sessions when they are provided

5. Placement on academic probation may be a required portion of any approved
remediation plan. A student on academic probation cannot be in good standing.
Any student enrolled in approved remediation activities is expected to resign from
leadership positions they may hold in sanctioned student groups or on campus. A
student may request exception to this requirement. Exception is subject to approval
by the Director of PA Studies.

6. Students assigned remediation activities are permitted to take administrative leave
of absence, however, the time period should not exceed 12 months.

7. Students required to register for repeated or additional courses will normally be
required to pay related additional tuition and fees. Students required to repeat or
enroll in courses as part of an approved remediation plan are subject to the
requirements contained in the respective course syllabus or syllabi. If remediation
includes deceleration to a later class, the student will become subject to the
graduation requirements listed for that class.

8. Remediation activities offered prior to awarding final course grades are subject to
requirements listed in the respective course syllabus. In the event a course syllabus
does not address or prohibit reassessment, or does not define allowable activities,
reassessment is subject to the approval by the Director of PA Studies.

9. Failure of a course due to unprofessional conduct or behavior must be brought to
the attention of the Vice President of Student Affairs to determine an appropriate
course of action and in accordance the Student Code of Conduct, if applicable.

10. Failure to successfully complete all requirements in an approved remediation plan
will result in dismissal from the program.
Responsible Party:
Director of PA Studies, Student.
11. Successful completion of an approved remediation plan as determined by the
Director of PA Studies will result in student promotion.
