Located deep in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, voted the number 2 fastest
growing wine destination in the nation, second only to Napa (Orbitz.com) and the
number one place to visit in the Summer (New York Times).
Texas is one of the original and eldest wine growing states in the United
States, with vines planted here more than one hundred years before they
were planted in California or Virginia. In the 1650’s, Franciscan priests
planted Mission vines in West Texas, near modern day El Paso. The vines
were a necessity in the production of sacramental wine. The famed
horticulturist Thomas Munson used Texas vines to create hundreds of hybrid
grapes and conducted significant research in finding root stock immune to
the Phylloxera epidemic, which saved the French wine industry from total
ruin. The advent of Prohibition in the United States virtually eliminated
Texas’ wine industry, which didn’t experience a revival until the 1970’s,
beginning with the founding wineries in the Texas High Plains Appellation.
With the new generation of winemakers began the recognition of Texas
wines on the international stage.
Today, Texas is the fifth largest wine producing state (behind California,
New York, Washington and Oregon), and the
number of Texas wineries almost quadrupled
between 2001 and 2011. Texas wineries
have produced 1.2 million cases of wine in
recent years and its wine and grape-growing
industry contributes $1.8 billion a year to the
state’s economy.
Texas is an enormous state (27 percent
larger than France), so it stands to reason
that many kinds of grapes can be grown
here. There are over 100 grape varieties
planted in Texas and because there are so
many different microclimates and soil types
it can be difficult to generalize characteristics of Texas wines.
A Tempranillo produced in the North Central region, with its high elevations,
low precipitation and cool nights, might as well come from a different
country as a Muscat from the hot, low-lying Southeast. If you do not know
exactly what your palate prefers, the Texas Hill Country Wineries trail events
will help you through that tasty journey…all on a tank of gas.
Join us for our self-guided driving tours or travel with a group. It’s always
fun to take a wine trail trip in conjunction with a festival or seasonal event.
You can visit several wineries in a day, or take a more leisurely approach
discovering restaurants, artists’ studios and bed-and-breakfasts along the
way. Don’t forget to check out the beautiful scenery and perhaps take in
some local music while you’re experiencing fine wines.
Texas Hill Country Wineries, which includes 36 members, is the largest and
most well-known association of wineries in the state. Our region is a key
attraction among the Hill Country’s 5 million annual visitors. There are four
self-guided events, group tastings, barrel tastings and more in the Texas Hill
Country wine region each year.
