After graduating from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor’s of Science in Occupational
Therapy, Joani M. Richardson, OTR/L spent the first ten years of her career as a private contractor
and traveling therapist in various settings across the country. She has twenty years of experience
working with toddlers and school-age children in both private and public settings, focusing her
work primarily on children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

In a rapidly changing world, it is imperative that teachers, therapists, clinicians and family members understand our children
with developmental challenges and have the tools and strategies necessary to be proactive and make a difference in their
growth. The number of affected children continues to grow. In March of 2014 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
estimated that 1 in 68 U.S. children are diagnosed with Autism. As this and similar populations grow into adulthood they need
to be prepared to live and function independently in the community and to be gainfully employed.
This fast-paced, practical and evidence-based workshop will help you gain new insight into the world of Autism, sensory
differences and related challenges. You will be introduced to the Intervention Hierarchy, a unique tool used to guide your
day-to-day interaction, problem solving and treatment planning. Extensive use of examples, pictures and anecdotes will
prepare you to use the strategies immediately and effectively in any setting. Whether you’re working in pre-school, high
school or between, this workshop will prepare you to discourage negative behaviors while fostering growth in all levels of
social, academic and behavioral skill development.
About Your Program Instructor
After graduating from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor’s of Science in Occupational Therapy, Joani M. Richardson,
OTR/L spent the first ten years of her career as a private contractor and traveling therapist in various settings across the
country. Ms. Richardson has twenty years of experience working with toddlers and school-age children in both private
and public settings, focusing her work primarily on children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder. In addition to
providing classroom consultation and individual treatment, Ms. Richardson was the Autism Support Services Coordinator
and served as the Autism Evaluation Team leader for the local school district. Ms. Richardson is trained in administration of
the Autism Diagnostic Observation Scale and has extensive training in the DIR/Floortime model. Ms. Richardson developed
the Intervention Hierarchy which is a widely used tool that guides problem solving and intervention for clientele with Autism
and other disabilities. Ms. Richardson has presented numerous seminars and training workshops related to Autism Spectrum
Disorder to clinicians, therapists, teachers, school support staff, administrators, child care center staff and parents and has
been a featured speaker at statewide professional conventions. Ms. Richardson is a member of the American Occupational
Therapy Association and the North Carolina Occupational Therapy Association.

5. Utilize an intervention hierarchy as a tool to guide skill development, intervention and problem solving in Autism Spectrum
Disorder and other disabilities.

SATISFACTORY COMPLETION
Participants must pay tuition fee, sign in, attend the entire seminar, complete an evaluation and sign
out in order to receive a certificate of completion. Participants not fulfilling these requirements will not
receive a certificate. Failure to sign in or out will result in forfeiture of credit for the entire workshop. No
exceptions will be made. Partial credit is not available.
