Beillmann - Skating Club of Central New York
Skating Club of Central New York Beillmann
MARCH 2015, Bulletin No.2
*Hi Everyone! It’s that time for the newsletter again! This is such a great club to be a part of! Everyone is so friendly to each other and supportive! For many of us, our skating friends are a welcome sight after a long and sometimes stressful day at school or work! It’s nice to see welcoming, smiling faces at the rink. The Board is working on making our skating experience even better by refreshing our Safety Protocol and adding a music monitor starting the middle of this month. Exciting, positive changes are always in the works! *Skate Challenge As many of you know, SCCNY’s Test Session & Skate Challenge competition is coming up quick: March 20-‐22. Not only is the competition a great time to show off our skating skills, but it is an awesome time to show support for our club! There’s lots of preparation yet to do and lots of help needed on those 3 days. Many skaters will be coming from out-‐of-‐state and we want to look our best! Skaters can help too! Email Mary at [email protected] today & ask her how you can pitch in! *Learn-to-Skate Our Learn-to-Skate program just started their 4th semester of the year on Wednesday
evening, March 4th with a 120 skaters enrolled! The groups are completely full
therefore new skaters cannot be added. If interested in Learn to Skate and didn’t get
signed up in time, please check the website for Saturday lessons which will start on
March 28th. Nancy Saya, the Director, says the most exciting part of the Wednesday
lessons are the number of high-level skaters that are enrolled in the groups…so much
LTS talent! Please come watch the Learn-to-Skate synchro team, the Icicles! They will
be competing in the Skate Challenge along with the other SCCNY synchro teams. Go
Icicles! Basic Skills level skaters will be at the competition on Sunday too! Come cheer
them all on!
*Empire State Games
Over the weekend of Feb 5,6 & 7th, more than 30 members from our club skated in the Empire
State Games competition set in beautiful Lake Placid. Not only did our skaters make a great
showing but they did very well – as almost every figure skating medal ceremony had skaters
representing our club! The winter setting was perfect for watching participating in some pretty
amazing skating but also was a lot of fun for toboggan rides, Main Street shopping,
camaraderie, hamming it up for photos, and, despite the freezing weather… indulging in Ben &
Jerry’s ice cream of course!! If you didn’t make it to “Empires” this year, don’t miss it next year!
*Synchronized Skating
The season has been very successful! At the most recent competition, Empire State Games, our teams
again racked up several medals! The beginner team, CNY Chill and the pre-juv team, CNY Storm, won
First Place in their divisions! Yay! The Open teams received medals as well, with CNY Blizzard Blue
placing 2nd and CNY Blizzard Green placing 3rd! The medal ceremony was outdoors and the teams were
invited to skate around the Olympic Oval. The synchro season is wrapping up right here in Cicero with all
5 teams from our club competing their programs at the Skate Challenge! Sadly, the very last time you can
nd
catch a glimpse of this season’s excitement is at the Ice Show, Sat May 2 … Then its time to look toward
next year! 
Try-outs for the 2015-16 season are Sun, May 3rd. Save the date for Synchro camp
too which is slated for July 15-17th. Check in with the SCCNY website for further info
on both events. And don’t forget to check out the new CNY Synchro twitter and
instagram accounts! @cnysynchro for both!!!

Researchers at Brigham Young University recently
designed and built an unobtrusive skate sensor that
can measure the impact when a figure skater lands a
jump—and it turns out they're absorbing forces up to
eight times their own body weight. For comparison,
when running your legs are only absorbing about two to
three times your own body weight. For example, a male
150 lb skater can land a jump with the force of a 1 yrold elephant over 1,000 lbs!
Heart Rate during a skating program is normally 195
beats/minute. Skaters will sustain this heart rate in a
3 – 4 minute skating program equal to an 800-meter
runner. WOW!
