Charlotte Safety Training – Lifeguard Course Schedule and Policies Winter 2014/2015-­‐ Summer 2015 COURSE PREREQUISITES: ALL participants must pass a pre-requisite swimming test to be eligible to take the Lifeguarding course – this test is given the first day of class, after
check-in. Part 1 “300 yard swim” - The swim is 300 yards non stop (not timed) -100 yards freestyle with a supportive kick and rotary breathing with FACE IN WATER, 100 yards
breastroke with a pull-breath-kick-glide motion, 100 yards freestyle or breastroke (swim goggles allowed for this portion). Part 2 “Brick Test” - Candidate must be able to swim 20
yards, retrieve a 10 pound object from 7 feet of water, and return to starting position within 100 seconds (swim goggles not permitted for brick portion). Part 3 “Treading Water” –
Participants must tread water for 2 minutes using only their legs with their hands under their armpits (this is a separate activity from the brick test and does not include using any
weight). If you think that there is a chance that you will not be able to complete the pre-course swim, make an appointment for a swim test before class begins.
CERTIFICATIONS: Lifeguard Certification includes Lifeguard Training, First Aid for Lifeguards, and CPR/ AED for Lifeguards. Validity period is 2 years, and all certifications must
be issued together (no portion may be issued separately). Certificate is issued electronically via email link directly from the Red Cross to email address specified by Lifeguard
Candidate. Certificates are usually available within 1 business day of the last day of class.
COURSE COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS: Students must score a minimum of 80% on both written tests (Lifeguard Training, CPR/ AED and First Aid), PLUS, perform all rescue
skills up to the course standard to receive a passing grade in the Lifeguard Course (Swim goggles may be used during portions of the course, but candidates must demonstrate
competency in all skills without the aid of goggles. Swim goggles may NOT be used during the final testing portion of the course). Participants must be on time, and attend ALL
class sessions. We do not schedule make up classes and all class sessions must be attended. A missed class will result in the student taking the entire course over again (a $100
fee may be required, depending on situation). Students are required to read the Lifeguard Participant manual – failure to do so could result in poor class and test
performance. A link to download the book is provided with your email registration confirmation. We have paper copies on hand for classroom use.
MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION: Enrolling in our Lifeguard Training program does not guarantee successful completion of the course. In addition to participant performance on
written tests and required skills, participants will also be evaluated on their leadership, maturity, and punctuality. Charlotte Safety Training reserves the right to withhold
certification of a participant that does not meet ANY of the above requirements. No refunds will be issued for “no shows” (You may re-take a Lifeguard Course for an
additional $100 fee). Deposits are non refundable. If you pay for the entire course up front, and cannot complete the prerequisites for any reason, you will be entitled to a refund
minus your deposit amount.

payment amount (deposits are non refundable, but may be applied to another course). Names and email addresses used on the registration forms will be used when filing the

individually, along with the current price for that course. EARLY REGISTRATION IS ADVISED.
