TAURUS PT 24/7 Handles well OFFICIAL MAGAZINE OF REPLICA GUNS FIRING PLASTIC PELLETS N° 27 www.cybergun.com January 2007 SIG SAUER SP 2022 CO22 For all-weather play TABLE OF CONTENTS TEST Editorial Among the new products being introduced in this 2006 end of year season, there’s something for every taste and every budget. Automatic pistols, a pump-action rifle, an assault rifle, some manually operated models, a CO2 operated replica, not to mention the accessories. This issue number 27 of SAM is one of the richest ever. The Sig Sauer SP 2022, the weapon used by French gendarmes, police and customs officers is offered in a CO2 version with fixed breech. There’s a little detour over to the domain of ‘customized’ arms based on the pump-action S&W M3000 shotgun. The superb manually operated Taurus PT 24/7, with its exceptional grip. The first combo ‘Pack’ consisting of a Colt M4 R.I.S. and a Colt MK IV. The indispensable carrying case and protective eyewear in the Swiss Arms product range. Finally, the most recent addition to the CO2 family, the Taurus PT 99 Full Metal. As I was saying, this is a very rich issue! And what is more, the entire editorial team joins me in wishing you a Happy New Year 2007. Stéphane Balle, Editor-in-chief. This first show of its kind was without a doubt success. A great number of visitors who are passionate about Soft Air® guns came to the exhibition hall during the 3 days. The many stands of specialized exhibitors gave them the possibility to see all the latest products and innovations. You could also find a spot to do target practice with professionals standing by and offering advice. In this way even the youngest visitors could be initiated into our preferred leisure activity in complete safety, particularly as regards ‘Western’ shooting with the replica held at waist level. CYBERGUN was well received. The competition organized on its stand was very successful, with many winners going after the magnificent prizes. This first show succeeded and we keenly suggest you visit next year’s second edition of the SHOOTING GAMES SHOW! New ‘Arctic White’ Biodegradable Cybergun Pellets The new ‘Arctic White” biodegradable Cybergun pellets mark a new stage in the Air Soft gun domain. Its ideal weight of 0.20 g corresponds to the best precision/range correlation for Soft Air® guns. This pellet is suitable not only for manually (spring) operated replicas but also works marvelously in Soft Air® guns equipped with BAX, gas and the (electric) AEGs. Packaged in vacuumsealed sachets to preserve all their qualities as long as possible, they are available in jars of 5,000 pellets. After firing, the pellet decomposes in a few weeks, leaving behind no traces. A noble deed for the environment! The SAUER S92 Full Metal rifle A superb bolt-action rifle with body in imitation wood. Powerful, with a pellet that has a velocity at the muzzle of 120 m/s (with a pellet weighing 0.20 g), a range of 60 meters and a Hop Up type trajectory correction system. The Sauer S92 accommodates a scope and an aluminum bipod, accessories in the Swiss Arms product range. The magazine has a capacity of 28 pellets. Ref. 280752 Manufacturer’s suggested price: EUR 129 January 2007 3 Soft Air Mag TEST The SP 2022 is a very special weapon for us French. It’s what our gendarmes, police and customs officers use. Many different versions exist, but Cybergun offers us a fixedbreech CO2 model of very fine craftsmanship. SP 2022 CO2 Fixed breech and all-weather G Gas Guns are known to offer power and heightened realism. The movement of the breech, a function which is present in all the Blow Back models, gives the impression of using a real firearm. So why develop a fixed-breech model? Simply in order to offer still more power! Indeed, in Blow Back replicas, the gas serves to eject the pellet, but a part of the energy is taken by the movement of the breech. What results is a velocity leaving the barrel that is weaker and less operational performance. With a fixed-breech replica, the entire energy developed by the gas is applied to propelling the projectile. Although there is less realism, there is greater power. The Sig Sauer SP 2022 is rated at 1 Joule, which is equivalent to the power of the replica Colt M4A1 assault rifle made by Cybergun. With respect to propellant consumption, the SP 2022 can fire around 250 pellets with a single Sparklet, meaning 16 magazine loads. For enhancing precision, the SP 2022 is supplied with a new fixed BAX trajectory correction system. In terms of handling, the Sig Sauer SP 2022 is a replica with a very pleasant feel to it: the grip is perfectly reproduced. The ejection mechanism of the magazine and the safety are readily accessible, The sights are fixed and have no marker for rapid aiming other than a foresight, where a white dot is painted. Note that the hammer is present and movable but that it does not constitute part of the operation of the replica. Soft Air Mag 4 January 2007 TEST In a concern for realism, the manufacturer has gone so far as to reproduce the grooves of the original barrel. You can make out the 6 mm barrel inside the frame. During firing, the center of the valve is struck, releasing the gas, which in turn ejects the pellet. Unlike the Blow Back, all of the power of the gas is transmitted to the pellet. The magazine of the SP 2022 contains 15 pellets. With a power of 1 Joule at the mouth of the barrel, and given the BAX system, I recommend you use white 0.20 g pellets. The fixed breech CO2 powered Sig SP 2022 has a completely new system for closing the magazine. Until now Cybergun CO2 replicas were supplied with a flat key. Now an Allen key has been placed in the box. The grip is easier, but be careful not to turn the screw too tight. assuming the shooter is right-handed. Please note that a large part of the weight of this replica is in the magazine. Indeed, it is in the metal magazine that the pellets and the CO2 cartridge are located. There are other metallic pieces in the firing mechanism behind the breech. The magazine takes 15 pellets and the SP 2022 has a completely new system for closing the magazine. The sights are fixed and there is a white dot on the foresight (the part in front above the barrel) for taking aim more quickly. A rail is fitted under the barrel for attaching a tactical light or a spotting laser. You will find all these accessories in the Swiss Arms product range distributed by Cybergun. Unlike standard gas, CO2 allows you to use the replica in all weather conditions. “Classic” gas guns require a certain minimum temperature in order to go from a liquid state to gas. However, CO2 is stored as a gas and so there is no change of state and even winter temperatures do not interfere with the functioning. Another advantage of CO2 is the elimination of maintenance work. There is no need to disassemble the replica to grease the moving parts. Finally, the price: the Sig Sauer SP 2022 is on sale for less than € 90. That makes an excellent investment during this Christmas season. Text and photos: Stéphane Balle As with all Air Soft guns, the SP 2022 has a safety. When raised (left image), you can fire. If the safety is in the down position, (right image), it is impossible to fire. January 2007 5 The markings on the SP 2022 are true to the original. The one on the pistol grip (image on the left) is particularly successful. On the right side of the breech, you find a serial number ending in ‘GN’ reproduced – indicating that the copy was made based on a model produced for the Gendarmerie Nationale. On the same side is the manufacturer’s logo (center image). The left side of the breech shows the original markings of the SP 2022. Soft Air Mag TEST Our American cousin H ere is a version of the Sig Sauer SP 2022 intended for the North American market. American regulations with respect to firearms are very different from ours. Ownership of handguns and other weapons is much more widespread than in France. In order to ensure that a Soft Air® gun is not confused with real arms, American legislators have required that the end of the barrel be colored in fluorescent orange and that a large part of the replica be made of transparent (clear) material. For reasons of readability, the markings are not engraved but painted on. The manner of distribution is also very different. Soft Air® guns are stocked on the shelves of major retailers like Wal-Mart and Kmart, as well as in shops selling sporting goods and outdoor supplies. The Americans are also passionate about Air Soft guns. Here is an example of a model intended for the US market. Text and photos: Stéphane Balle Typical packaging for the large American retailers. The product is easily visible and all the features are very quickly spotted. This photo is representative of American regulations: in order not to confuse a replica with a real firearm, the Soft Air gun is transparent (clear) and the end of the barrel is a fluorescent orange color. You cannot confuse the two. The requirements of American regulations allow us to see some of the operational parts. Thanks to the translucent plastic of the breech, you can see the firing hammer. When you press the trigger, the hammer rises (left image) and then strikes the valve above the magazine (right image). Here opposite you have a magnified view of the hammer just before it strikes the valve. Soft Air Mag 6 January 2007 TEST For a whole generation, the look of this Smith & Wesson M3000 Sawed-off brings to mind the shotgun with sawed-off barrel and no stock of bounty hunter Joss Randall. Smith & Wesson M3000 Sawed-off The super-equipped pump-action shotgun I As you can confirm, the M3000 Sawed-Off has a handsome collection of accessory rails. The M3000 magazine holds 19 pellets. agree. The purists will argue that the genuine shotgun was a Winchester lever-action repeating carbine, but you have to admit that the allure is similar. In a word, we have here a replica of the pump-action Smith & Wesson M3000, somewhat modified. The stock has been replaced by a wood-color pistol grip and the barrel measures just 25 cm. Another very successful element is that the arming mechanism also has a wood look. As regards its functional characteristics, it is a manually operated replica that uses a pump-action to compress air. By applying pressure to the trigger, you release the air and propel the pellet. With a muzzle velocity of around 85 m/s, you can send a pellet about 60 m. Moreover, good precision is assured by the M3000’s BAX, the latest generation trajectory correction system. As you have seen from the above, preparing for firing is so simple a child could do it, but first you have to fill the magazine. For this you have an accessory. Inside the box, you will find a small tube with a rod in plastic. Place the tube above the magazine; fill it with pellets and, with the help Enlargement of the Red Dot mounting. Be sure to position the legs properly under the bolts. January 2007 of the rod, let 19 pellets drop into the magazine. The first thing that struck me when I saw the box is the presence of several accessory rails. There are 3 of them. The first is very large and is situated above. The other two are of modest size and located on either side of the replica. Inside the box, you will find two accessories for mounting on the rails. The first is a Red Dot sight, which goes on top of the replica. The second accessory is a light which you can put on either side of the barrel. In any case, there remains one place free for another accessory, such as a spotting laser to ‘customize’ your Soft Air® gun further. As regards the installation of accessories, I would draw your attention to the fragility of the mountings. Since they are made of plastic, you have to take care not to force them, lest you damage them. The Smith & Wesson M3000 Sawed-Off is sold for about 50 Euros and, in terms of looks, conveys another vision of the Soft Air® range. The tactical light is attached to one of the two Weavertype lateral rails. 7 Text and photos: Stéphane Balle Aside from the reminders about correct use, there is only the marking of Smith & Wesson on the pump-action shotgun. Soft Air Mag TEST TAURUS PT 24/7 A bull in the palm of your hand You might recognize the Taurus brand from its copies of the Beretta 92, but here Cybergun is offering you a replica of the PT 24/7, a compact automatic pistol that is particularly well done. Photo above: the safety. When raised, it prevents firing. Photo below: the rail under the barrel allows you to customize your Taurus PT 24/7. You can put a tactical light or a spotting laser here. The whole range of Cybergun accessories is compatible. It is sufficiently unusual to bear mentioning: the replica is sold with two 25-pellet magazines already supplied. Soft Air Mag 8 January 2007 TEST Y our first contact with the box of the Taurus PT 24/7 gives you an idea of the quality of the replica. Its black background and two white bands underline the elegance. One is struck by the amount of information it contains. While adding to the decoration, a message in red tells us this replica is a ‘top quality’ version with a rubber hand grip, a metal support for the barrel and a high precision barrel. You can also see the BAX logo, the last word in trajectory correction systems. Finally, in what is quite rare for replica sets, the box contains a second 25-pellet magazine. With respect to technical features, you can read that the PT 24/7 weighs 578 g, that the pellet leaves the barrel with a velocity of 90 m/s and that it has a useful range of 40 m. When you open the box, the initial impression is confirmed: we have here an exceptional manuallyoperated replica! The Taurus PT 24/7 markings are very well reproduced. On the left side of the breech, you find the Taurus brand name and bull’s head logo. On the right side, there is the indication of the model (PT 24/7) and the original caliber (9 mm). Enlargement of the pistol grip. Below, you can see the reproduction, in relief, of the bull’s head logo. The feel of the Taurus PT 24/7 is especially pleasant. The design is very ergonomic. One should mention the series of soft plastic ribs on the inner part which match perfectly the shape of the hand. The second surprise comes when you pick up the gun. The rubber handgrip is especially pleasant. The soft plastic ribs of the inner part fit naturally under the fingers. The weight adds to the credibility. When you look at the sights, you see three white dots: two on the breech cover and one on the foresight, helping to take aim quickly. You appreciate that the sights are molded to the breech. The ejection mechanism on the magazine is accessible using your thumb if you are right-handed. Once the magazine is removed, the balance remains the same, proving that not all the weight is in the magazine. To feed the 25 pellets into the magazine, there is no other solution than to insert them one by one. Once this operation is completed, you should arm your Soft Air® gun. The ridges on the back of the breech make for good handling. Once the gun is loaded, make sure that the safety is not engaged. The safety is located behind the breech, just after the stop. It is marked with a red dot and it is only active if the dot is hidden. One more proof of the quality of this replica is that when the magazine is empty, the breech remains in the open position, meaning that when you insert a loaded magazine, you can fire immediately. The sights are fixed, but they have three white dots, making for quick aiming. The ridges on the breech allow for better handling when reloading. As is often the case with high quality manually-operated replicas, the breech remains open when the last pellet has been fired. Thus, you can change magazines, release the breech and resume firing. With respect to markings, the Taurus logo is superbly reproduced on the grip, but it is a pity that the inscriptions on the breech are painted on rather than engraved. Indeed, after repeated use, the paint has a tendency to wear off. You will note with interest the Picatinny rail under the barrel, which allows for installation of such accessories as a tactical light or a spotting laser from the Swiss Arms product assortment. As we pointed out at the start of this article, the Taurus PT 24/7 has a fixed BAX type trajectory correction system. This consists of two rubber strips located at the entrance to the barrel, on the upper part. When the pellet is ejected, it rubs against the strips and begins to spin. This rotation creates a vacuum over the pellet, a bit like above the wing of an airplane, resulting in lift that carries the pellet further. As regards price, the Taurus PT 24/7 is sold for about 50 Euros at all the fine Air Soft Gun retailers. Text and photos: Stéphane Balle January 2007 9 Soft Air Mag TEST Colt M4 R.I.S. - Colt MK IV SHOCK DUO For the first time Cybergun offers us a pair of Soft Air® guns in a combo pack. The Colt On Duty Kit, consists of a Colt M4 R.I.S. assault rifle and a Colt MK IV automatic pistol. The combo pack consists of two replicas: the Colt M4 R.I.S. assault rifle and the Colt MK IV automatic pistol. Enlargement showing the mounting of the tactical light situated on one of the three available accessory Soft Air Mag Besides the traditional M4 sight, the R.I.S. version has a spotting laser. 10 T hese two replicas are manually operated, meaning that you need to rearm them after each round. They are delivered with loads of accessories. To begin with, the M4 R.I.S. can be recognized by the support grip under the forearm. It has several accessory rails. The first, located above, is used for supplementary sights. The M4 is equipped when shipped with Red Dot that is switched on by turning an adjustment dial situated behind a reticule. The two other rails, one fixed and the other part of the forearm, can take the tactical light supplied with the kit. The accessory set is rounded out by a strap for easy carrying. As for technical features, the M4 R.I.S. has a 300-pellet High Cap magazine, an adjustable Hop-Up trajectory correction system and a telescopic, foldaway stock. January 2007 TEST The firing selector switch acts as a safety with the positions marked: “Safe” and “Semi” or “Auto” . As you can see, the firing selector switch is not ambidextrous. Here we see the magazine ejection button. All markings are present on this Colt M4 R.I.S. replica, though one should mention that they are painted on, not engraved. The stock of the Colt M4 R.I.S. is telescopic and has 3 positions, so that the length of this assault rifle varies from 72 to 80 cm. A typical accessory of the Colt M4 R.I.S. is the support grip. It can be dismantled by unscrewing the lower part. The sights are adjustable laterally and in height. The white disc under the ejection flap is the adjustment control of the Hop-Up trajectory correction system. The M4 R.I.S. is a manually operated replica, which must be rearmed after each round by pulling down the rearming. The MK IV is a derivation of the famous Colt 1911. The set includes a tactical light and an accessory rail for installing a sight. It should be mentioned that you cannot put the Red Dot from the M4 rifle on an MK IV. However, you do have a spotting laser, which can replace the light. You can mount the laser on the M4 R.I.S by placing it in front of the support grip. The MK IV has a 14-pellet magazine that you can load one by one, or you can use the special rapid load magazine (ref. 603021, not included). The rated power of the M4 is 0.4 Joule (90 m/s with a 0.12 g pellet), whereas the MK IV develops 0.2 Joule (62 m/s). Rounding off the package, you receive a free gift of 1,000 yellow 0.12 g pellets. The Colt On Duty Kit has a manufacturer’s suggested price of 89 Euros. Text and photos: Stéphane Balle The Colt MK IV has a set of accessories like this tactical light and the rail mounting for an aiming device. On this replica Colt MK IV, the stop on the breech serves as the safety. Made of Cordura, it is both very rugged and very elegant. The art of travel In order to take care of the replica properly when traveling, this Swiss Arms carrying case has three Velcro adjustable tabs. The ones at the ends are visible in the photos above, while the third one is located in the center. This system of fastening allows for a multitude of combinations. T In addition to the main compartment, the Swiss Arms carrying case has two smaller pockets at the front. Ideal for taking along your handguns. The apple of your eye You can take it for granted that this accessory is indispensable! These Swiss Arms brand eyeglasses provide optimal protection against the risk of being hit by a pellet. To be sure, protective glasses are mandatory when you are participating in games, but it is good to bear in mind that when shooting at targets a pellet can rebound and strike you in the eye. In this context, Cybergun offers you two pairs of eyeglasses that can withstand a shock of more than 1 Joules at close quarters without cracking. Since a Soft Air® gun cannot generate more than 2 Joules, one can state that these eyeglasses are perfect for Airsoft guns. The Pro-Tactical Softair Goggles are shown with the standard temples (right) and with the headband closure (left). The first pair, Softair Goggles, are very trendy. Entirely transparent except for the temples (the part of the frame going back over the ears), they are especially Softair Goggles. This ingenious system allows you to switch between temples and a head band by pivoting the fastening. January 2007 13 comfortable. The shape fits the face perfectly and provides protection against pellets arriving from the sides. The black part of the temples is anti-slip and soft, assuring comfort. The second pair, the Pro-tactical Softair Goggles, have a special feature allowing the temples to be dismantled. Indeed, by a simple hand movement you can replace the fixed temples by an elastic strap, which is better suited for games involving movement. Once they are adjusted on your head, these glasses will not budge. As regards the price, the Softair Goggles cost 10 Euros and up, while the Pro-tactical can be bought for less than 30 Euros. Soft Air Mag TEST As we know, winter is not a good season for gas-powered replicas: decompression is not optimal and the replica can malfunction. But if you replace standard gas by CO2, it’s another story. Random operation gives way to raw pleasure. TAURUS PT 99 Full Metal, I love it H CO2 Blow Back replicas like the Taurus PT99 require a minimum of maintenance. The power of the PT99 (90 m/s for a 0.20 g pellet) necessitates regular lubrication of the breech sliding channel. For that purpose, you should have on hand some APS3 oil, which is available from Soft Air retailers, and spray the moving parts of the breech. To disassemble, all you need to do is remove the magazine, press the button located on the left of the breech and depress the lever situated on the right of the breech, just above the plate. Then carefully move the breech forward. To reassemble, follow the same procedure in reverse, taking care to push the breech a bit further. ere is a replica of the type we love, with a look that is very familiar, with power to spare, and with a high capacity Full Metal magazine. To top it all off, the PT99 CO2 is a replica that one can fire in both semi- and fully-automatic mode. When I tell you ‘raw pleasure,’ I’m not exaggerating. If you add to all this an adjustable BAX trajectory correction system, what you get is a truly exceptional replica. In its appearance, the PT99 is a copy of the very well known Beretta 92. Given its power of 0.81 Joule (90 m/s with a 0.20 g pellet), you can send a pellet around 45 meters. No doubt, you will have noticed that the magazine is fairly large. That is due to the CO2 sparklet. A flat key supplied in the kit allows you to remove the plug and to screw it back down when the cartridge has been replaced. The size of the magazine lets Cybergun take the capacity up to 38 pellets arranged in staggered rows. However, the other side of the coin is that it takes a certain amount of time to load all the pellets. It is pity there is no rapid loading tool that would facilitate putting the projectiles in place. The Taurus PT 99 operates in semi-automatic and fully automatic versions, the difference being in the firing switch supplied. In the case of a semi-automatic, the switch has just two positions. If the switch is raised to the red dot, your replica is in safety mode; when you lower it, you can fire. In the fully automatic version, there is a third position. As with the semi, the ‘up’ position in line with the red dot is the safety. To fire in semi-automatic mode, you lower the switch slightly (center photo). If you turn the switch all the way down and the magazine is loaded, when your finger is on the trigger firing can commence. That is the icing on the cake and it is pure pleasure! Soft Air Mag 14 January 2007 TEST The presence of the CO2 sparklet has obliged the manufacturer to make the magazine longer. This requirement has been made into an advantage, since the PT99 will accept 38 pellets arranged in staggered rows. The Taurus PT99 is a CO2 replica, and the sparklet is situated in the magazine. The plug screws down with the help of a key supplied with the kit. You will note this key does not look like the one shipped with the most recent SP 2022 model. (see page 4). When the magazine has been emptied, the breech of the PT99 remains open, just as in the original weapon. The enlargement above let you see how the top of the magazine looks when filled with pellets. When the breech is closed, a pellet will be placed at the entrance to the barrel. Enlargement of the top of the magazine. Here you can see to the right the place where impact occurs. A little hammer strikes the metallic disc, thereby releasing a precise amount of gas. In the center, the hermetic joint where the gas escapes. Finally, to the left, the housing for the pellets. This image gives you an idea of the path the gas follows as it ejects the pellets. The Full Metal breech in detail: you see the pump (to the right) and the spring (to the left). The markings on the Taurus PT99 are perfectly reproduced. You will even find on the body a genuine laser-engraved serial number. With respect to operational characteristics, this replica is a Blow Back version, meaning that the breech recoils to give greater realism. During this maneuver, the next pellet is placed at the entrance to the barrel, at the level of the BAX, and the hammer is cocked, ready to strike the valve located behind the magazine. Your replica is then ready for the next round. Moreover, since the breech is made of metal, you will hear the noise of a genuine firearm. Unlike the SP2022 (see page 4), not all of the energy of the gas is used to dispatch the pellet, since there is a loss caused by January 2007 Superb family photo: the Taurus PT99 Full Metal CO2 surrounded by the Desert Eagle .50AE to the left, the Smith & Wesson 40F Sigma to the right, and, in the foreground, the mini UZI machine pistol. Like the PT99, the Desert Eagle exists in Full Auto and Semi Auto versions. The Sigma is available only in a Semi version, while the mini UZI has a firing selector switch that allows for both semi- and fully-automatic operation. the movement of the breech. No need to worry though as one sparklet will allow you to empty 2 or 3 magazines. In closing, let’s talk price. The Taurus PT99 CO2 exists in two versions, so there are two different prices. The semiautomatic version costs 170 Euros and it is recognizable by its black box with blue inlay, whereas the combined semi- and fully-automatic version, with green inlay on the box, will cost you 180 Euros.
