(i.e. 1st place in age at a 5K will earn 35 points, 2nd = 34, etc.) Points possible for each race are listed in the far right column in the table on the left. For races with two distances, the higher of the points is for the longer distance. • Members who participate in 7 circuit races AND earn 50 volunteer points will win an award. The top 10 race scores will count for the final circuit point total. • Age group is determined by the age of the participant at the FIRST RACE on the CIRCUIT (Miller Park Zoo 5K). • Age groups for the circuit are as follows (for both male and female): 14 & under, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39,40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 6064, 65-69, and 70 & over. The Lake Runner • April 2008 Profile on Page 3 Bob Clary by Jana Kiefer & Phil “Geno” Warlow 29 years ago, Bob Clary decided to start running to get in shape for soccer in college. Inspired by two cross-country-running friends who talked him into running a 10K, Bob became hooked and hasn’t looked back since. second lap faster than the first. No stop signs, no roads to cross, just keep running. J & G Team: Bob, why did you join the Lake Run Club? Bob: I have always thought about the Twin Cities Marathon. I lived in the Twin Cities for a few years. It is one of the prettiest cities I have been to with the lakes, bike paths, and parks. Bob: The club does a lot to promote running in our community. I think it is important to support the club so we can all benefit from great races, training programs, and even the Kids Run. J & G: That was a shameless plug for the Club, Bob. Thanks! Tell us about your first race. J & G: Watch out for those sometimes cranky fishermen! Do you have a particular race on your “To Do” list? J & G: You’re not the first person to comment on how beautiful Minneapolis-St Paul is. Definitely worth a visit! What’s good race stories do you like to tell? Bob: I ran a 5K in Peoria where another runner and I were leading the race. As we approached an intersection we were directed to go right. About 400 yards later we realized everyone else had turned left. We turned around, caught the pack and finished one-two. Bob: It was Abe’s Amble in 1978. Governor Thompson was driven to the starting line, and he fired the gun to start the race. It was two laps around the fair grounds. There are distinct smells at the fair – including animals, stale food/drink, and the cleaning fluid they spray on the roads in the early morning! I was lucky enough to get my photo in the Springfield newspaper. From there I began looking for other races to participate in. And I had the privilege of participating in a race in Japan. As guests of Japan, the team I was on was treated like royalty. It was fun to experience a different culture and meet some of the best runners from Asia and Russia. J & G: The fairgrounds now has exploding transformers dotting the landscape, so maybe the smelly run wasn’t so bad, eh?? If Abe’s Amble isn’t your favorite race, which is? Bob: Locally, it’s the Lake Run. It is a great course and everybody shows up. It is also inspiring to see so many who trained with the Catch The Wave program complete their first race. Tied for first place is the Kids Run on Fridays. It’s great fun to watch both the children and the parents share their excitement. J & G: Statements like “leading a race” and “finishing one-two” are words the J & G Team doesn’t often have the need to use. However, it is nice to know people who can use those words. And we’re not intimidated at all… because we know Rich Beal. How about you? (photo courtesy of Cecil Withrow) Bob: This past week I was riding my bike in the country and I saw – painted on the road – a question asking if Rich Beal had been sighted. He appears to be hard to spot. J & G: Yep, and at the Lake Run, everybody knows your name – if they can remember your name after spending time in the beer garden. Which of your races carries the fondest memories for you, Bob? J & G: If you make a habit of being among the front-runners in a race, of course you’re not going to spot Rich. He likes to mingle with the pack. Do you have your sights set on any special races this year? Bob: My first overall win as a cross country runner in college. The first meet of the year I was second-to-last place. The final meet of that season we ran against the same school. I was fortunate to move up to first place. Bob: During the spring and fall I focus on road races. During the summer I concentrate on triathlons. I’m currently gunning for the Lake Evergreen Tri. I understand Colleen has some world-class talent coming. J & G: Seems to us that it’s more than good fortune that sent you to first place. Sounds like hard training to the ever-alert J & G Team. So where do you train? J & G: I think you heard correctly, Bob. As a world traveler who has raced in China, Japan, and Singapore, what keeps you running now? Bob: Lake Dawson. I do a two-lapper with the goal of running the PROFILE continued on page 6 Page 4 The Lake Runner • April 2008 RACE CLIPBOARD Many of the forms for these races can be picked up at Often Running in Normal or at Read’s Sporting Goods in Bloomington. On Sunday, October 7, 2007, something extraordinary happened: at least ten – count ‘em – TEN marathons took place in North America. In no particular order whatsoever, they were: • • • • • • • • • • The LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon The Portland (Oregon) Marathon The Royal Victoria Marathon (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) The Steamtown Marathon (Scranton, PA) The Twin Cities Marathon (Minneapolis-St Paul, not Bloomington-Normal!) The Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon – hmm, that’s two marathons along Lake Michigan… The Bellingham Bay (Washington) Marathon The Athens (Georgia, not Greece) to Atlanta (Georgia, not Illinois) Roadskate A2A 2007 – yes, folks, that’s an inline skating marathon! There was also a 52.4 mile double marathon and an 87.35 mile ultra marathon too! The Maine Marathon (Portland, Maine) – they had to call it the ‘Maine Marathon’ because the name ‘Portland Marathon’ was already taken (see the second bullet above). And to think that the two marathons in the two Portlands were held on the same day! The Sacramento (CA) Cowtown Marathon – I’d love to see those race jerseys! Do you suppose they had cow spots or cow pies on them?! Page 5 Marathon. And I hate to be the one to say it, but if someone hadn’t died during the Chicago Marathon, I don’t think there would have been any media coverage, except in Chicago. The night of the Chicago Marathon, I heard that the race had been shut down because of the extreme heat that day. So I sat down at my computer and typed in www.msn.com to see if there was any information on the web site. And what did I find, you ask? Nothing, nada, nil, zilch, zip, zero. Then I stayed up past my 10pm bedtime to watch the sportscast on an area television station. But there was no mention of the Chicago Marathon or any of the other marathons. So the next morning, I opened up the sports section of the newspaper and several pages back, I found a column mentioning that tragically, a runner died during the Chicago Marathon; but there were no race results. Here’s what I’ve been pondering since October 7: Why isn’t there media coverage of marathons? Why should I wait a couple of months to read about past marathons in “Runner’s World” magazine? If you added up all the athletes who play professional sports, the number of athletes who participate in marathons would far exceed those in the NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL and all those other acronyms. And think about it: People who participate in ‘thons’ (not thongs!) – half-marathons, full marathons, duathlons, triathlons, biathlons – train long and hard, and they are certainly as deserving of media attention and coverage as athletes who compete in other sports. So back to my original question: Why aren’t marathons covered by the media? Why, the local newspaper even devotes a page to NASCAR. If you think runners dress funny, just check out the NASCAR page! Do marathons lack media coverage because they’re not a money-making sport (unless you’re Kenyan)? Is it because running is not a professional sport with investors? Is it because we runners haven’t risen up and demanded equal coverage of running events? What does it take for our voices to be heard – another runner dying during a marathon? Now, which of the above marathons did you hear about in the days following October 7? Most likely, only one – the Chicago And why is the Tour de France the only bicycle race that’s covered by the media? Oops, that’s another topic for another newsletter! 5/24 River Run for Wellness 5K 8:00am 5/26 YMCA Memorial Day 5K Streator, IL 9:00am Ralph S 815-672-2148 streatorymca@mchsi. com 5/31 5/26 Operation Santa Memorial Day 5K 9:00am O’Brien Field John C 217-248-8650 [email protected] 5/26 Memorial Day 5K 9:00am VA Hospital Kelly 217-443-2870 [email protected] 5/31 Brad Onken / SMART Summer Sizzler 5K Sterling, IL 9:00am Sinnissippi Park Steve B 815-622-6200 [email protected] www.sterlingparkdistrict.org Chillicothe, IL Peoria, IL Danville, IL Passavant Powerade 5K, 10K 8:30am Kevin E 217-479-5858 [email protected] www.passavanthospital.com Jacksonville, IL June 6/7 Tremont Turkey Fest 5K *Circuit Race* 7:30am Mike Pflederer 309-925-5341 [email protected] Tremont, IL 6/8 Double Diamond Dash 5K Toluca, IL 8:00am 815-452-2102 [email protected] 6/14 Steamboat Classic 15K, 4M Peoria, IL *Circuit Race* 7:00am Phillip L 309-676-RUNN [email protected] www.steamboatclassic.org 6/14 Lake Mingo Trail Run 7.1M Danville, IL 9:00am Kennekuk Cove County Park 217-431-5318 Page 6 President’s Message by Jana Kiefer Where’s spring? Winter seems to want to hang on for a while this year, and for those of us who log outdoor miles year-round, winter’s been around too long already! I have to say I’ve gotten great use out of my YakTrax and warm running gear, but enough is enough! As is usually the case, the weather threw a nasty curve at the first night of Catch the Wave, February 26. Strong winds and a snowand ice-covered track made the first night a challenge for beginners and veterans alike. Congratulations to all participants who came out and tramped through their first training run! The first Circuit Race of the season kicked off with the Miller Park Zoo 5K on March 1. There was no driving rain, there was no horizontal sleet, and there were no gale-force winds. Was this really the Miller Park Zoo 5K? Yes it was, and about 215 runners came out to enjoy the good weather. PROFILE continued from page 3 Bob: The Tuesday afternoon track workout has a bunch of fast guys that I enjoy running with. Nigel Keen is having an outstanding year. I know he has worked hard to see his times drop. It’s encouraging to see him doing well. J & G: Nigel provides a nice service for the LRC members by putting those workouts together for us. He’s much appreciated. What else is part of your arsenal of secret training weapons, Bob? Bob: Well, for tri training, I use a GPS on my bike to track my workout. When I’m finished with the ride, I download the info into my PC. From there I review the ride with graphs and a variety of stats. Plus it keeps me from getting lost in the back roads of McLean County. J & G: Remember, Bob, you’re never lost – you’re always somewhere. Wise words from the J & G Team. Bob, when it’s all said and done, why do you do it? Bob: For two reasons. I want to stay healthy and remain competitive as an age grouper. And I like the opportunity to interact with others who share a common love for the sport of running. Thanks for taking the time to share your running views with our Lake Run Club audience, Bob. Good luck with your training and we’ll see you on the Circuit! The Lake Runner • April 2008 Early Daylight Savings Time will send the Thursday night runs back out to Green Gables beginning March 13. Start time is 5:30pm, but show up any time you wish and run as far as you wish. There are still a few holes in the Finish Line and Software volunteer schedule for this summer, so get in touch with Volunteer Coordinator Jill Schneider to volunteer to help out. Please run responsibly and stay safe. The Lake Runner • April 2008 Page 7 From Pages Past Part 7 by Merlin Anderson We’ve come a long way in our journey through the archives of The Lake Runner. We’re all the way up to seeing what happened 10 years ago. January 1998 issue In bold letters inside a prominently placed box was the message “This is your last newsletter if you haven’t renewed for 1998!” Talk about tough! If I hadn’t acted immediately back then, I wouldn’t have the resources to complete this article. In a member profile, Charlie Grotevant was asked what keeps him running, to which he replied, “Running has given me a greater appreciation of other people and a greater love for my wife, my family and life itself.” No wonder Charlie received the “Most Pleasant to Run With” award at the LRC Awards Banquet this year. February 1998 issue The fourth Awards Banquet drew about 80 attendees. Among those receiving awards presented by Emcees Pat Dunagan and Dave Hawkinson were: Female Runner of the Year: Stephanie Gillam Male Runner of the Year: Aaron Berthold Most Improved Runner: Ed Matesevac Best New Runner: Tonya Smith Volunteers of the Year: Annie Campbell, Mark Troester, Terry Tay Nelson Newsletter Award: Paul Gorden March 1998 issue Doug Gillam reported a much larger than expected turnout for the first ever session of the Catch The Wave program: 140 participants and 22 volunteers. Kathy Kirk said she joined “to learn basic running skills from experienced runners and to meet others who have an interest in running.” What a great start and it’s still going strong! April 1998 issue “FRET NOT, GEORGE, THE TEN LEAFY SWAMP MONSTERS WILL RUIN OUR MONKEY” was the title of an article by new pointmaster, Doug Rosen. What the…? Doug explained that this was an anagram – the unscrambled message was “GREETINGS TO YOU FROM THE NEW POINTMASTER, MY FELLOW LAKE RUNNERS.” Doug went on to introduce himself, explain the circuit rules, and to say that he would never have volunteered if he had known about the initiation ritual which “involved two guinea pigs, a chainsaw, and a whole lot of molasses.” Ann Charback reported on the 1st annual Miller Park Zoo Stampede. Yup, it was 10 years ago that this race started with 136 runners, 25 walkers, and 54 critter crawlers. In 2008, there were 215 runners. March 1998 issue The Lake Run went metric! Kirby Cheek measured both the 12K course and the 4.37 mile course and got them certified with USAT& F. Race director Laura Keen reported that we had 777 registrants for the May 2 Lake Run events, which was the largest turnout since 1989. The certification made a difference to Barb Gurtler as she ran the 12K in 1:01:40.6 for a state record for women in the 60-64 age group. If you didn’t run that fast, take heart from the “Wit & Wisdom of Mitch Read” cartoon which stated, “Look at a tough day at the races this way: You can’t have a bad race unless you already have a good one to compare it to.” June 1998 issue Mark Rayburn was elected president for the 1998-99 year. Mike Heffron won the “Name a group of runners contest” with “JOUNCE OF RUNNERS.” Ken Endrizzi, who completed his 400th race at the Lake Run finishing 3rd place overall in the 4.37 mile race, wrote an article outlining some tips we could all use. One of Ken’s gems is, “If you want to improve your race times, you have to improve your workout times. Improvement and success takes time and effort. It also involves failure and perseverance.” So that’s where I went wrong! July 1998 issue Carrie Young takes over as newsletter editor, continuing our tradition of producing top quality newsletters until she passed the baton to Kevin McCarthy in 2003. Thanks a million to Doug Gillam for carrying on the tradition for several years before Carrie stepped forward. August 1998 issue Kids Run directors Adriane Oakley and Lisa Goeken reported a hugely successful year with an average attendance of 280 kids. Doug Gillam wrote a fine tribute to Pam Faulk, who lost her life in a car accident on July 24. Doug’s final line was, “We will miss you, Pam.” Still true! Ann Charback wrote an article about the St Jude Bloomington to Peoria Run. The Bloomington to Peoria group collected $29,000 for the St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, up from $15,000 in 1997. And this just keeps growing & growing, with $165,000 collected in 2007! For more information about this run, see http:// www.bn-stjuderunners.org/index.htm September 1998 issue Rich Beal reported a record number of 208 finishers at the Dawson Lake 5K and that $1500 was contributed to the Children’s Discovery Museum as a result of the run. Melinda Cheek wrote an article about “8 ways to make a race director smile.” Here they are: 1) volunteer, 2) pre-register, 3) come early on race day, 4) cooperate, 5) say thank you, 6) stay away from the results area until the volunteers are finished, 7) stick around for your award, and 8) offer constructive suggestions or comments. Might I add as a finish line coordinator: don’t you dare even come close to the finish line if you don’t have a number!! Oops, maybe Melinda should write this article. I think she can word it more tactfully. February 1998 issue Paul Gorden is shown looking at a sun-dial. I hope he wasn’t timing me. Evidently, people had already started to notice that I was getting old as the “Wit & Wisdom of Mitch Read” cartoon stated, “Back in the 1970’s we didn’t have Merlin Anderson to kick around at Bloomington races. Oh wait. Yes we did.” November 1998 Issue A new LRC program, Ride The Wave, was announced for 1999, with Jeff Jackson being the first RTW director. December 1998 issue Where is it? I can’t find it. Now what do I do? Stay tuned as I tear the house asunder! Those awards were based on the number of volunteer points earned and included gift certificates to Panera, Often Running and Empire Spa. If you volunteered at least once and received volunteer points, please see Jill Schneider by April 30th for your volunteer appreciation award. Volunteer points are reviewed annually by the Volunteer Committee and the Lake Run Club Board. Remember, points are awarded for significant time spent helping the club. But since our club runs on "volunteer-power", we realize the importance of all volunteers and appreciate all our member volunteers! The following list contains the 2008 volunteer point guidelines: 1. The race activities listed at the very bottom of the list are for our club sponsored circuit races only (St Pat’s, Lake Run, Park 2 Park, Dog Days, & Dawson Lake). 2. Points for finish line, software, and course measurement will be awarded for any race where our club has been asked to provide services. 3. Only the listed activities will earn points for 2008. If you would like to suggest a volunteer activity for inclusion the following year, it will be taken into consideration but the Volunteer Coordinator and the LRC board will make the final decision. 4. Only race directors and event/program coordinators may submit volunteer names to the Volunteer Point Master - Jeff Simpson ([email protected]). These volunteer lists should be submitted no later than 30 days after the event (or the last day of the event – ex: CTW, Kids Run). This ensures that everyone eligible will be acknowledged for any special awards & gifts at the annual end of year awards banquet. 5. Individual volunteers should work with their contact person (race director or event/program coordinator) to make sure they get included for points. An ABC “February PR” of 41 people showed up at the Boys & Girls Club on February 16 to enjoy the morning and contribute an amazing total of $673 (also a February PR) to benefit the Boys & Girls Club. Thanks a million to everyone for your enthusiastic participation and generosity! We had twelve first time ABC runners: Greg Baumann, Steve Beasley, Tom Butler, Connie & Austin & Kara Butorac, Tanya Jones, Malika Kelly, Matt King, Stacie Rood, Kevin Tuuk, and Laura Vedeen. Thanks for joining us and come back often! Evelyn Young, the director of the Boys & Girls Club, was a perfect host. She was there early to let us in and prepared a feast of post-run goodies including bagels & cream cheese, cookies, granola bars, oranges, bananas, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, water, and Powerade. Evelyn greeted the group and spoke about what the Boys & Girls Club does, what their plans are, and how much she appreciates our help. She also showed her managerial abilities by directing Tim Rood to retrieve something from a high shelf. Evelyn has made quite an impact on our community. She was named the 2007 McLean County Mayors Association Person of the Year. Shown below is a condensed excerpt from the Pantagraph (11-5-2007): A woman who has devoted her life to helping children has been named the McLean County Mayors’ Association Person of the Year for 2007. The award comes as Young is celebrating her 30th year with the Boys & Girls Club. She’s worked 15 years with the Twin Cities’ chapter and 15 years in Omaha, Neb. “God put me on earth to care for children,” she said. Downs Mayor Jeff Schwartz said Young’s work with kids not only in Bloomington-Normal but countywide is what prompted the award. “They’re the future of all communities,” he said. “The value and devotion she has for kids is a value all mayors share.” Young is the second non-mayor to receive the award. Besides being executive director of the Boys & Girls Club, Young also works with the “Mom & Me Campaign” that helps kids spend quality time with their mothers who are incarcerated, has been a foster parent, and is a Court Appointed Special Advocate, a volunteer sworn in as a juvenile court officer and appointed by a judge to represent children who have been abused or neglected. We had great people and a great cause, but is running to the west end of the trail an adventure? It sure was! When I got to the Boys & Girls Club, Mary Ellen Schupbach (who provided the mid-run refreshments) asked me to remove a dead cat from the trail next to the cemetery. Perhaps it died trying to get into the cemetery… I just happened to have a pitchfork among the items I brought to the ABC run, just in case I needed to remove road kill. (Don’t ask me how I know these things, I just do.) So at 7:45am, I was fighting a frozen cat that was too solidly frozen to the trail. The cat won! Thus, a new adventure was ahead of us – the first ever cat hurdling event in an ABC run! The course was marked so people could turn back at 1.55 miles for a 5K; or run to the end of the trail to find the mid-run refreshments and head back for a 10K; or use the mile markers to make any other distance. I opted to run 11 miles and found that, once again, I ran too far and ended up getting to Meg’s coffee cake too late. While I was wolfing down a couple of Kevin Fahling’s cookies, I saw Tamara White and Missy Adams taking the last two pieces of coffee cake. They fed me the crumbs when I protested. Some runners made the day even more of adventure. As Meg and I were driving away, I looked down the trail and saw Laura Vedeen and Tom Weber hurdling that darned cat for the last time as they completed an 18 mile run. And a few hours later John Kastigar, Kent Lowry, The Lake Runner • April 2008 and Paul & Saori Hanaki-Martin added four miles by running the Merna ASE at noon. Perhaps most extreme were the bikers (Phil Warlow and Dave O’Brien). It was only 14 degrees when Phil started biking from Hudson to join us. Special awards – featuring accomplishments or talents outside the normal or expected range attributed to runners – surface annually at this festive event. These awards afford a unique and occasionally tongue-in-cheek recognition of outstanding achievement. As has occurred every year since the inception of the LRC awards banquet, a few members are designated to receive the recognition they have so aptly earned, or so justly deserve. This year the Lake Run Club proudly bestows, for exceptional achievement, these awards to: Charlie (Smiley) Grotevant Jill (Sweet Cheeks) Schneider Steve (Arid Extra-Dry) Barr Sherry (Raconteur) Detloff Peg (Sidelined) Stark Dave (Initiator) Hurst Paul (Iceman) Hanaki-Martin Mitch (Shoe Guy) Hobbs Curt (Papa) Simpson Carol (Hey It Works For Me) Pratt Runner Most Pleasant to Run With Runner Most Pleasant to Run Behind Doesn’t Sweat Much for a Fat Boy Most Conversational Runner Most Attractive To Injuries Hurst Surge Award Just About Thawed Smells Strangely Like Running Shoes Married Up To Running Malt Based Carbo-Loader The Royal Treatment You Deserve Our goal is to provide a true spa experience in an authentic spa environment Our full service day spa offers a complete range of services and the highest quality products by Pevonia We offer: • Massage Therapy • Hydrotherapy • Body Treatments • Skin Care • Nail Care • Youth Light 2010 • Pedicures • Teen Services • Spa Packages • Vichy Shower • Skin and Body Care Products • Bridal Packages and Gift Certificates • Sports Massage by Certified and Licensed Therapist Lake Run Club members will receive a 15% discount with this ad. Last year I finally recovered from Plantar Fasciitis by NOT RUNNING for the entire month of February. During that time, my husband Bob King ran the Lost Dutchman half marathon in Arizona. The name of this race refers to the “lost gold mine” supposedly left behind somewhere in the Superstition Mountains by a “Dutchman” (actually a German – Jacob Waltz). We decided the name “Lost Dutchman” was really appropriate! Somewhere between mile 1 and 2 the lead bicyclist took the pack of half-marathoners down a wrong turn and got them off course. We figure the ham radio volunteers at the 2 mile mark radioed in to say, “Hey – no one has come by yet...” A race official finally drove down that (incorrect) road and started telling everyone to turn around and get back on the correct course. The lead runners ran about an extra 1.7 miles out and back on the wrong road. Bob ran about 1.2 extra. Of course it varied per person: the ones who were further behind actually got to turn around "sooner" – having run less distance on the wrong road. And on top of that, since the course was an out and back, some people who were wearing GPS watches kept track of their personal distance and simply turned around before the midpoint, trying to make their race distance come out to an exact 13.1 miles. (I don't know exactly how they figured it out, but they would have had a few miles to work on it in their head...) half marathon and knew what her time was, so who cared what happened for the rest of the course! Talk about a nightmare! There was no way to realistically adjust everyone's time – different distances off course; different times off course; some who “cut the course short” at the midpoint, and some who “finished their race” when their watch said 13.1 miles – but how would a timer or race official know which ones did what? At least they quickly announced that they would comp people for their 2008 race entry fee. That had the effect of taking the edge off any anger that people might have had, but really, there was nothing that could be done and most people were good-natured about it. Fast forward to February 17, 2008 – A Great Race!! This year, Bob and I both ran the Lost Dutchman half marathon. The weather was perfect, the scenery fantastic, the course accurate, and we both snagged PR’s! Can’t ask for anything better than that! A few years ago this race was named one of the “Best Little Marathons in the Country” by Runner’s World magazine. Although we ran on only the last 6 ½ miles of the point-to-point marathon course, we can see why it’s so highly rated. And we’ll be back next year for more of the same. I also heard of at least one person who, after running the extra distance early in the race, continued on to the correct turnaround point, but then on the way back when her GPS said 13.1 miles, she simply walked it in from there. She figured she had done her Left: Bob King after 2007 “Lost” Dutchman Half Marathon. Right: Bob & Vicki King with the Lost Dutchman after the 2008 Half.
