The Cold Lake Kid
Born on a blistering cold winter night in a wood
and sod shack in 1843, Terrance Gable came into
the world with a growl and a mean streak a mile
long. Little did tiny Terry’s parents know that
their offspring would grow up to terrorize small
towns throughout the South and mid-West United
States, and eventually from coast to coast in
Canada. Many stories abound with regards to this
desperado, but none more chilling than the year
Terrance Gable spent in Cold Lake Alberta in 1867.
From barkeeps to cattle rustlers, all were
summarily dispatched to meet their maker by the
lightning fast irons of the menacing man who
would forever be known as The Cold Lake Kid. Join
us now as we explore the history of …….

MATCH RULES AND PROCEDURES

All firearms to be handled ONLY in these designated areas:
Marked Safety Area.
Load/Unload tables.
Firing line with RO present.

If you need to work on an EMPTY gun, please do it at a
designated Safety Area. NOT the load/unload tables.

All SASS safety rules will apply. It is YOUR responsibility to know
them. Current rulebook is available for viewing in The Telegraph
Office.

All long guns should be carried muzzles up. This is not a hunting
camp. You are in a crowded civilian range. Please pay careful
attention to your gun handling OFF the firing line, as well as on. It
may get a little crowded in here, so please exercise a little extra
caution..

Dry firing at the load/unload tables is prohibited.

Dropped rounds and shells are “dead”. Leave them where they
fell, even if you have completed the stage. Someone will retrieve
them for you. It's a muzzle control issue.

A round over the berm is a Match DQ.

The shooter is responsible for staging/re-staging their firearms. A
precariously staged gun that falls is not a prop failure. It is
considered a dropped gun and a penalty will be applied as per
SASS rulebook.

WAIT FOR THE BEEP! Do not try to anticipate it. Repeat
offenders will earn a Spirit Of The Game penalty (:30 seconds).
This is cheating by trying to get a head start and RO's will be on
the lookout for it.

Shotgun knockdowns must fall to score. Keep shootin'!

SG make-up shots must be taken immediately. (Before moving on
to next target).

Loading the rifle from the body is allowed, but ONLY to make up
for an ejected round.

Do not chamber rifle rounds until the gun is pointed downrange.
This is now a 10 second Minor Safety Violation.

Once a pistol clears leather & gets cocked, it HAS to be fired.
(No de-cocking.)

This is a “No Alibi” match. Once you have hollered the start line or
made a move for a gun, you are committed and there is no
stopping until you have completed the stage.

Several of us put a lot of hours into these matches for YOUR
entertainment. Please show your appreciation by helping out
where possible & hustling a little to keep the match moving along,
so we can all get off the range together at a reasonable hour.
There is no such thing as "shoot & scoot " in CAS.
THE RUNNING-IRON ARTIST
10 PISTOL, 6 SHOTGUN, 10 RIFLE
Rifle and shotgun staged on either horse or horses.
You came to this valley with nothing, but your herd is increasing very quickly. Your
cows are having 3 or 4 calves a year. The Valley Cattleman’s Association has noticed.
They have ordered their hands to keep an eye out for you, but you seem to lead a
charmed existence until today, when your fire is putting up a little too much smoke.
Starting Position: Squatting by the fire (careful of your spurs!) holding a running iron.
Start Line: “Now-Now Boys, let’s not be hasty!”
Procedure: At the beep, stand up and drop the running iron and head to the ropebox, then draw your pistol to engage the three pistol targets, starting on the LEFT in a
Nevada Sweep. P1-2-3-2-1. Holster and draw your second pistol and engage the three
pistol targets starting on the RIGHT in a Nevada Sweep. P3-2-1-2-3. Holster and
retrieve your shotgun from the horse. Engage the left shotgun target S1 then the right
shotgun target S4 one shot each. Then S2 for two shots and S3 for two shots.
S1-4-2-2-3-3. Place your open and empty shotgun back on the horse and pick up your
rifle. Double tap the rifle targets starting from the Left, R1-1-2-2-3-3-4-4-5-5.
Saddle quickly and with muzzles up get out of the valley and over to the unload
table.

THEY WOULDN’T STAND FOR DIXIE
10 PISTOL, 4 SHOTGUN, 10 RIFLE
Shotgun staged on bar, rifle staged at hitching post.
It’s 1867, you’re name is T.H. Gable a former Private of the 27th Battalion, Company C,
Georgia Infantry, Army of the Confederacy, and you are having a quiet drink in a
saloon. The saloon musicians have been playing a variety of tunes, including a number
of those sung during the War of Northern Aggression. They segue into the lively piece,
DIXIE, the anthem of the Confederate States of America. You listened without
comment while they played “Rally ‘Round the Flag”. You held back your tears as they
played “Marching Through Georgia” You bit your tongue when they played “We’ll
Hang Jeff Davis to a Sour Apple Tree”, but the raucous hoots of derision and insulting
comments about the South and Dixie, by the carpet bagger in the saloon have now
pushed you beyond endurance.
Start Position: Standing at the bar, waving your hat in one hand above your head,
and the other hand making a fist.
Start line: “YEEEHAWWW!” (Rebel yell) and holler, “Stand when they play Dixie You
Damn Yankee!”
Procedure: At the beep, place your hat on your head and draw your first pistol.
Speed shoot 5 rounds into P1, holster and draw your second pistol and speed shoot 5
rounds into P2. Grab the bartender’s shotgun and shoot two shotgun targets,
S1-2-1-2 or S2-1-2-1, any order. No double taps. Place the shotgun back on the bar,
open and empty. Run to the hitching post for your staged rifle. Double tap the three
rifle targets starting from the left, R1-1-2-2-3-3-2-2-1-1.
Muzzles up and ride to the unload table yelling “The South Will Rise Again!”
5 second bonus if you shout this line without prompting.
(This historically accurate description of the famous shoot up is why the Cold Lake Kid
goes by his alias. The Yankee Carpet Baggers are still looking for him. Honest)

You’ve just ridden into town and you stop at the Saloon to cut the dust of the trail.
A local offers to buy you a drink. A man invites you to join him and some others for a
game of poker, he seems friendly enough, too friendly in fact. You’re suspicious and
your suspicions soon prove to be correct. After a few hands you notice he is dealing
from the bottom of the deck.
Start Position: Sitting at table and holding your cards.
Start Line: “That’s a smooth bottom deal you’ve made friend!”
Procedure: At the beep, knock Lefty off his chair, stand up and draw your first
six-gun. Engage the steel targets, from the left in a skip sweep. P1-3-5-2-4. Holster and
draw your second pistol and repeat the skip sweep, P1-3-5-2-4. Holster your second
six-gun. Pick up your shotgun from the table and engage the left shotgun target with
two shots, then the right side shotgun target with two shots. S1-1-2-2. Replace the
shotgun open and empty on the table. Pick up your rifle from the table and double tap
the rifle targets from left to right in a double tape skip sweep. R1-1-3-3-5-5-2-2-4-4.
Collect your winnings, then muzzles up and off to the unload table.

Rifle and shotgun staged on either horse or horses.
You’re tending your boss’ herd on the North Range. One day, while doing your rounds,
cleaning water holes, fixing fences and pulling doggies* out of mud holes, you see a
gang herding some of your boss’ cattle off your range. You ride for the brand so you
have to stop them.
Start position: Standing in the rope-box, holding your rifle at cowboy port arms.
Start Line: “Hold on there! Those ain’t strays!”
Procedure: At the beep, double tap the 5 rifle targets in a sweep starting from the
right R5-5-4-4-3-3-2-2-1-1. Place your empty rifle on a horse, action open and pick up
your shotgun. Shoot S4 once then S1 once, shoot S3 twice and S2 twice. S4-1-3-3-2-2.
Place your shotgun on a horse, action open and empty. Double tap Nevada sweep with
your pistols, draw your first pistol and from the right P3-3-2-2-1, holster and draw your
second pistol to finish the sweep P1-2-2-3-3.
Pick up your long guns and muzzle’em up and ride for the unload table.
*A Doggie is a little calf who has lost his mommy and whose daddy has run off with
another cow.

SHOOTOUT AT THE BAR.
10 PISTOL, 4 SHOTGUN, 10 RIFLE
Shotgun and rifle staged on the bar.
You’ve had a long, hard and dry trail drive but you’ve now reached town and you’d like
a drink and meal of something besides beans and bacon. Granted you haven’t been
near any water but what cookie has in the coffee for about a month or maybe two. This
is a cattle town and should be welcoming to cowboys and their money.
Little do you know a civic improvement league has been formed. Cows and stinking
cowboys are no longer welcome on this side of town. The barkeep’s refusal to pour
you a drink, his comments about your delicate bouquet, your ancestry and your
sainted Mother have just sealed his fate.
Starting Position: Standing at the bar, one hand on a six-gun grip and the other
hand pointing at the bartender.
Start Line: “Mister, your mouth just earned you a trip to Boot Hill!”
Procedure: At the beep, draw your first pistol and speed shoot 5 rounds into the
bartender P1-1-1-1-1 then holster. Draw your second pistol and put another shot into
the bartender, then double tap his two friends P1-2-2-3-3 and holster. Grab the
bartender’s shotgun and shoot two shotgun targets from the left for 4 shots S-1-1-2-2.
Grab your rifle now and shoot a Sweep from the left. R1-2-3-4-5-1-2-3-4-5.
Ignore all the cadavers you’ve created and go muzzles up to the unload table.
