PAGE 3 Holiday Show 2007 Message from the Prez Story by Rob Zeiser Photo by Ben Brown Jr. continued from page eleven The More Things Change... A utumn came upon us and that can only mean one thing: Campout! While this one was the club’s tenth Campout, it was my first, with me being largely uninitiated in the joys of sleeping outdoors. And I was also unfamiliar with the joys of wildlife. Aren’t racoons just adorable? As I soon learned, no, not so much. In spite of the sleep deprivation, I had a really good time. Once again, I was really proud of our club and what a few dedicated people can do with a lot of hard work. I would like to thank all of the Campout committee, but particularly the Steves, Strong & Leaming, for chairing the event. While the Campout is a longstanding tradition of the club that continues to be popular, we had to make a change to another longstanding tradition. As I’m sure you are aware, In October we changed our home bar from Gail’s Dirty Duck to the Eagle Portland. It was a hard decision and quite a few people were unhappy with the change, but in order for any organization to thrive, you need to take a hard look at what doesn’t work and not be afraid to change it. I want to thank everyone who helped and supported the board throughout the change. We expect and hope that you’ll be happy with the results. Keep an eye out for more changes. We continue to offer new events and PAGE 4 Rob Zeiser at the Oregon Bears regular board meeting in early November 2007. modify existing events to keep them fresh. We keep looking for ways to make it better to be an Oregon Bear. However, the more things change, the more things stay the same. The Oregon Bears are still dedicated to bringing us all together, having a good time and making a difference along the way. We’re glad to have you with us. About the cover: This issue’s cover is one of three we are presenting for the Holiday Show this year. This is the first time we have used multiple posters for this event. Court could provide. Thanks to the ongoing relationship between our own Holiday Show Chairman Ben Brown Jr. - Mr. Oregon State Leather ’07, and Starbucks, (yes, the coffee place), Starbucks has donated volunteers and prizes- as well as money to the project- bridging corporate and community-based organizations! On top of it all, Andy Mangels, Mr. Oregon State Leather 2004, agreed to be in drag for the poster this year! Truly, OOH LA LA! Wait! Why am I saying “Ooh, La La!”? It’s the theme of this year’s event! Think “Moulan Rouge”! Think decadent and fun. If it seems like everyone is striving for this to be a huge success, you are correct. People throw the word “community” around too often- only to retreat to their own little corner, and box themselves in without giving a thought to what the term really means. We are counting on you as well. Our featured model is Andy Mangels, Mr. Oregon State Leather 2004, and a long-time member of your club. Patrick Thomas did the photography, Ben Brown Jr. did the layout and poster design, and Brianna Shewbert did the hair and make-up. From the Holiday Show 2006: Emcee Babalou on stage presenting one of over 20 acts. This show is by you and for you. We are proud to do it for you - and for the people in need. And that, ladies and gentleman, is what community is really all about. Mark your calendars: Sunday, 09 Decem-Bear 2007, doors at 6 p.m., show at 7 p.m.! JPEG and PDF files are available online for you to download. The JPEG files are great for your desktop or online viewing, and the PDF files are suitable for printing. Josh Todd OREGON BEARS PAWPRINTS / NOV - DEC 2007 Holiday Show 2007 Community Holiday Show enters its sixth year Story by Danzig McPherson Photos by Ben Brown Jr., Joni Kabana, Steve Leaming and Patrick Thomas T he trees are brilliant autumn hues; the air has a bit of a nip in it; we are preparing for our long winter’s naps.... But wait! Before we can hybearnate, we must not forget that the legendary Holiday Show will soon be upon us! YES! It is again time for the sixth annual gala community fundraiser. Like all good bears and cubs, I like a good snuggle-time story. Want cubby to tell you the story? OKAY! Long ago- back in 2002!- there was a snugly bear named R.B. Hiattthe founder of the Oregon Bears. He wanted to throw a Holiday Show- to have fun, be silly, and raise money to help those in need! It was a grr-eat idea! It made him beary happy. As the days passed- and the early Decem-Bear day of his party drew near, he found that he was short on acts and involvement. This made him a Poison Marie Waters, who will be hosting the auction at the Holiday Show again. sad bear. He then called on his fellow bearfriends, as well as his friends in the drag and leather communities for help. And, indeed they did bring that help! They brought it in spades! That, bears and cubs, is the legend of how the Community Holiday Show came to be.... It is now six years later; the Community Holiday Show has become a local tradition- with people from all over wanting to lend a hand. In accordance with tradition, we will have a mix of acts: from lip-synched numbers to live performances- and as such, we are once again actively recruiting talent from the Bear, Leather and Drag communities. The date of the show is the traditional second Sunday of the last month of the year: 09 Decem-Bear, 2007. Doors will open at six p.m.; and the show will start at seven p.m., sharp! This is real time, not “gay time”! Arrive early, as we expect it to be standing room only! Darcelle XV’s Showplace is once Oregon Bear 2007 Mark Brown, our Santa. Be one of the two official titleholders for the Oregon Bears! Every June at Beartown, the membership elects a new Cub and Bear to represent your community, raise money for charity, and most importantly, have fun. You must be a member in good standing for at least six months prior to running. PAGE 6 OREGON BEARS PAWPRINTS / NOV - DEC 2007 again playing host to the party- and I personally cannot think of it being held anywhere else! Can anyone, or anyplace, embody the bohemian ideals of this gala with such style? I think not! OOH, LA LA! We will have a live auction in the middle of the show, hosted once again by the incredible Poison Waters. Anything new this year? Sure! We will also hold a raffle- with prizes distributed at the evening. There has also been a change in how you get into the show. The cost is still five dollars- but this year, you can bring canned goods or personal hygiene products for Esther’s Pantry. Due to the dire need at Esther’s Pantry, we will not be collecting Teddy Bears this year; but, we will also not turn away anyone with a new teddy. The event will support two local charities: Esther’s Pantry (which gives food and toiletries to people with Holiday Show committee member and Ms. Oregon State Leather 2007 Coral Mallow will reprise her Wonder Woman performance for the Holiday Show. HIV/AIDS), and Central City Concern (which runs a variety of programs, from community health and drug rehab clinics- to shelter for the homeless and people with HIV). Right off the bat, members of the Oregon Bears board, including Mr. Oregon Bear, Mark Brown, and board members Rob Zeiser, David Weir and yours truly jumped in to help. We also have board members Steve Leaming and Frank Armstrong immediately saying yes to photography and accounting, respectively. This year, SantaBear will be played by our very own Mr. Oregon Bear, Mark Brown- with Steve taking Polaroid’s- for those who want to sit on Santa-Bear’s lap (all for charity, of course!).
