The Wolfpack will host the South Florida Bulls in the second of four straight
home games, the longest home stretch since the 1984 season. The homestand
could bode well for NC State, which holds an all-time .638 winning percentage in
Carter-Finley Stadium. Head coach Tom O’Brien is 5-4 in Carter-Finley as leader
of the Pack, including a 2-0 record this season.
WOLFPACK VS. BULLS, PART TWO
For just the second time ever, NC State and South Florida will square off on the
gridiron. The two teams first met on New Year’s Eve in 2005 in the Meineke Car
Care Bowl in Charlotte, N.C. at Ericsson Stadium, a 14-0 win for the Wolfpack.
The game was the last bowl appearance for NC State, and the first-ever bowl
game for the Bulls. The Wolfpack defense held the Bulls to just 10-of-30 passing,
a team bowl record for lowest opponent’s completion percentage.

Tickets
Four of the first five teams NC State plays this season were ranked at some
point this season, including the upcoming matchup with No. 13/14 South Florida.
NC State is the only ACC team to face four teams in the first five weeks of the
season that have been ranked at some point in 2008. In fact, a NC State team
has never played three ranked opponents in the first five games of the season in
school history.

BECK OFF THE BENCH
Redshirt junior Harrison Beck might be a safer bet as a backup if you look at his
numbers during his two-year Wolfpack career. Beck came off the bench to replace
starter Daniel Evans in the William & Mary game and found success through the
air, passing for 246 yards and two touchdowns.
In the six games Beck has come off the bench in his career, he has thrown for 632
yards with four touchdowns and four interceptions.
In the his four starts, Beck has thrown for slightly less yards - 624 - but has eight
interceptions and no passing touchdowns (he did run for a score against BC in 2007
in his first career start).
Beck showed signs of being a clutch reliever during his freshman year at Nebraska before transferring to NC State. He came off the Cornhuskers’ bench late in the
season to complete a 21-yard pass with a minute remaining that led to a game-winning field goal against Kansas State.
Below is a chart comparing Beck’s number as a starter and off the bench while at

BACK-TO-BACK TOP-15 OPPONENTS
NC State will play back-to-back games against AP top-15 opponents for the first
time since the 2002 season. In the last game of the regular season, NC State won
its 10th game with a 17-7 win at home over No. 14 Florida State to earn a berth in
the Gator Bowl. In the bowl game, the Wolfpack took out No. 11 Notre Dame, 28-6,
to finish off a school-record 11-3 season and a final AP ranking of No. 12.
East Carolina was ranked 15th in the AP poll, the highest ranked opponent NC
State has defeated since defeating No. 9 Florida State on the road in 2005. The win
was also the highest ranked opponent the Pack had downed at home since downing the No. 14 Seminoles in 2002 and the highest ranked non-conference foe since
the win over the Fighting Irish in the Gator Bowl.
O’BRIEN VS. RANKED TEAMS
Head coach Tom O’Brien is 2-2 against ranked teams as the leader of the Pack,
including a 2-1 mark in Carter-Finley Stadium. He posted nine wins over ranked
teams while at Boston College.

IRVING LEADING DEFENSE
Redshirt sophomore Nate Irving came into this season with just four career
starts, but his first four starts to open this season have been impressive. Irving

ACC Players of the Week
Defensive Back of the Week
Nate Irving (9/8/08)
Offensive Back of the Week
Russell Wilson (9/22/08)
second nationally in picks. He has had a pair of double-digit tackle games, with a
career-high 13 against William & Mary. Irving was named ACC Defensive Back of
the Week for his performance against the Tribe, when he also added an interception
and fumble recovery that both led to scores.
Irving is 11th in the ACC with 8.2 tackles-per-game and is tied for first with three
interceptions and ranks fourth in the league in tackles-for-loss.
No NC State linebacker (since 1960) has ever had more than four interceptions in
a single season, with Michael Hilka holding the record with four in 1967.
Irving will miss the USF game with an injury.
BRYAN LAST MAN STANDING
Coaches always tell their players that they are just one play away from being in
the game, and NC State’s tight ends are a perfect example of this. Redshirt senior
tight end and starter Anthony Hill is out indefinitely with a pectoralis strain after
starting the opener. Backup tight end Matt Kushner, who replaced Hill in the starting lineup against William & Mary, left that contest after 24 snaps with a knee inury
and is out for the season.
Enter redshirt freshman George Bryan, who earned his first start in the Clemson
game because of injuries and has been impressive since, as he currently leads the
team in catches (13), is third in yards (127) and tied for first with two touchdowns.
Bryan, who was the third-team tight end to start the season, is one of just two
healthy scholarship tight ends left on the roster. The other, true freshman Mario
Carter, will likely be redshirted this season.
Bryan made the most of his opportunities against the Tribe after Kushner got
hurt, grabbing the first five catches of his career for 41 yards and his first career
touchdown.
He added three catches against Clemson in his first start, then broke out in a big
way against East Carolina, catching the game-tying touchdown with just over a
minute left in regulation.

LINEBACKER (IN)EXPERIENCE
The six players listed on the two-deep at linebacker combined for just five career
starts coming into 2008. Redshirt sophomore Nate Irving had four of those starts
and redshirt junior Ray Michel started the last game of 2007.
Redshirt senior Robbie Leonard, a former walkon, not only had never even played
linebacker in a collegiate game until the opener against South Carolina, but the
converted safety had played in only 12 games from scrimmage in his career.
Irving, Michel and Leonard have each started the first four games of 2008 and are
currently three of the top-four tacklers on the team.
Below is a list of starts for the NC State linebackers on the two-deep:

SPEEDY GRAHAM
Freshman wideout T.J. Graham has instantly added speed to the Wolfpack.
Graham has returned punts and kicks for NC State, in addition to posting the top
yards-per-catch (21.9) average on the team.
Graham leads the team and ranks fifth in the ACC in all-purpose yards at 127.5
yards-per-game, the top mark for all freshmen in the ACC and the fourth-best fresh-

Injury Reports
All NC State student-athletes have signed
waivers allowing the media relations office
to release limited information on athletic injuries. For injuries that occur during a game,
the staff will announce the type of injury and
if the player is expected to return.
NC State will release the names of any
players that are scheduled to have surgery

He won the North Carolina 4-A title in the 100 and 200 meters with times of 10.44
and 20.82, respectively. He also posted the nation’s fastest time in the 200 meters
at one point during the season. In 2007 while at Wakefield HS in Raleigh, Graham
finished third nationally in the 100 meters at the Nike Nationals.
MCKEEN MAKES IMPACT
JUCO defensive end Shea McKeen has made a quick transistion to NC State, as
he ranks second in the ACC in sacks with 2.5, including his game changing performance against East Carolina.
McKeen shed his block on the third play in overtime and hit ECU’s quarterback
Patrick Pinkney in the back, forcing a fumble that was recovered by NC State’s Willie
Young.
Three plays later, NC State’s Andre Brown scored the game winner.
McKeen has 16 tackles and four quarterback pressures on the season to go with
his 2.5 sacks.
DUAL SPORT STAR
Russell Wilson didn’t have much of an ‘off’ season. Wilson spent the spring and
summer competing with the NC State baseball team, which advanced to the Super
Regionals of the NCAA tournament.
During the five weeks of spring practice and the multiple weeks of 6 am winter
workouts, Wilson went through all of the football drills with his gridiron teammates, then spent the rest of his time practicing and competing with the baseball
team. On April 12, he threw for 172 yards and three touchdowns in a long, physical scrimmage, then was in uniform at Doak Field for a baseball game that night.
Wilson hit .296 in 32 games, notching 21 hits including two doubles, a triple and
a pair of homeruns. He flashed his speed on the base paths, as well, stealing six
bases in seven attempts.

PACK TALENT HOME GROWN
From the day he took the job at NC State, Tom O’Brien and his staff made a commitment to sign the top talent in the state of North Carolina. That goal has certainly
been accomplished in a short period of time, as eight of the top 30 recruits in the
state (according to rivals.com) signed to don the red and white in 2008 - three more
than any other school (Virginia Tech signed five of the state’s top 30 players). The
Pack also landed three of the top six North Carolina prospects.
NC State’s 2008 signing class ranked higher than any school in the state according to both rivals.com and scout.com.
The 2008 Wolfpack roster is made of up 57 players who call the state of North
Carolina home.
WOLFPACK QUARTERBACKS IN THEIR FIRST START
Russell Wilson started against South Carolina, becoming the fifth different quarterback in the last five seasons to start a game for NC State (a span of 51 games).
Prior to that run starting in 2004, Philip Rivers started an NCAA record 51 straight
games from 2000-03.

WALK-ON DEPTH
Walk-on football players are an important group on a collegiate roster, as they
can provide scout team players for practice, special teams help and sometimes
add depth to a roster.
NC State is going to rely on its former and current walk-ons in 2008. Among the
44 players listed on the two-deep depth chart for the offense and defense, nine
either started their career as a walk-on or are currently one, including three starters among the 22 positions.
Meares Green has started at guard and tackle in his career and is the starting
right guard in 2008. Green, the most experienced walk-on for the Pack, has played
in 27 games, including 18 career starts.
Starting strongside linebacker Robbie Leonard has played in 28 contests, including 12 from scrimmage. A converted safety, Leonard has started the first four
games and has 26 tackles this season.
Fullback Harrison Ritcher - son of 1979 Outland Trophy winner and four-time
Super Bowl participant Jim Ritcher - is slated as the starting fullback, earning his
first career start at Clemson.
In addition, Matt White (backup left tackle), Taylor Gentry (backup FB), Koyal
George (backup cornerback), Eric Weaver (backup TE) Ryan Goodman (backup
linebacker) and Bobby Floyd (backup safety) are all current or former walkons.
Both long snappers - Corey Tedder and Michael Maurer - and punter Bradley
Pierson also started their careers as a walk-on.
IF YOU TRAVEL, YOU WILL PLAY
True to head coach Tom O’Brien’s comments during the week leading up to the
South Carolina game, nearly every NC State player on the travel roster played.
Only eight players did not see action out of the 66 players who made the trip, and
one of those was freshman quarterback Mike Glennon, who the coaches plan on
redshirting.
Twenty-two players saw their first career action for NC State, including five true
freshmen - wide receiver/returner T.J. Graham, fullback Taylor Gentry, cornerback
Dominique Ellis and linebacker’s Dwayne Maddox and Sterling Lucas.
In the Clemson game, 54 of the 68 players that made the trip saw action.

HEAD COACHES
Wolfpack head coach Tom O’Brien is not the only member
of the NC State coaching staff who had experience as a head
coach at another NCAA Division IA school prior to this season. In fact, O’Brien is one of three members of the coaching
staff who have been head coaches at the Division IA level. In
addition to O’Brien’s 10 years as head coach at Boston College, defensive coordinator Mike Archer was the head coach
at LSU from 1987-90 and linebackers coach Andy McCollum
was the head coach at Middle Tennessee State University
from 1999-2005, as that school transitioned from IAA to IA.
In the Atlantic Coast Conference, only Clemson has as
many coaches who have been IA head coaches before. Here’s
a look at the league schools and the number of coaches on
their staffs who were Division IA head coaches prior to their
current school:

HE KEEPS GOING ... AND GOING ... AND GOING
It’s a nickname that’s stuck.
When the 2007 season began, Jamelle Eugene was third
in line at the tailback position, behind upperclassmen Toney
Baker and Andre Brown. After Baker suffered a season-ending injury in the season opener, Eugene moved up to second.
When Brown broke his foot in the sixth game of the season,
Eugene stood alone at the position. His response? He played
445 snaps in the last seven games (63.5 per contest), posting
three 100+yard rushing games and averaged 83.7 yards per
game.
In the win over North Carolina, Eugene rushed for 159 yards
on 32 carries and against Virginia he was in for an amazing 76
snaps. It was around that point in the season that head coach
Tom O’Brien started calling Eugene “the Energizer Bunny,”
because, he said, Eugene just kept “going and going.” That
nickname was solidified and repeated this spring, when Eugene was once again called upon to carry most of the load at
tailback due to injuries.
Eugene returned to the lineup against ECU after missing
the first three games of the season with an ankle injury of his
own. He led the team with seven catches for 50 yards, and ran
for an additional 25.
‘FOUR’ THE FIRST TIME
NC State’s pass defense was solid for most of the night
against South Carolina, allowing just 106 yards through the
air in the first three quarters and picking off four passes. Each
of the four interceptions had a common theme - it was the
interceptor’s first of their career.
In fact, redshirt freshman Jimmaul Simmons had his pick
on his first career play, which came on third down of the
Gamecock’s first drive.
Redshirt Justin Byers added an interception in his first
career game and a pair of redshirt sophomores - linebacker
Nate Irving and DeAndre Morgan - each had the first pick of
their careers.
THE STAFF THAT STAYS TOGETHER...
Six members of Tom O’Brien’s staff at Boston College picked up and followed him when he made the move to NC State.
Two of those coaches, Don Horton and Jerry Petercuskie, had been with O’Brien all 10 years with the Eagles. Two others,
Dana Bible and Jason Swepson, had been there for eight years. Keith Willis spent six years at BC as an assistant under
O’Brien, while Jim Bridge was there four years.
But the Boston College connection isn’t the only one for the current Wolfpack staff. During O’Brien’s 15 years at the University of Virginia (1982-96), Mike Archer was there for two years, Bridge was there for two years and Petercuskie was there
for two years. Back in the early 80s, Archer and Bible were on the same staff at Miami. And from 1988-90, Horton was the
offensive coordinator at Wittenberg, while Bridge was a player there.
Here’s a timeline that shows the connections of the Wolfpack football staff through the years.

NC State has added a bronze statue of a wolf at the tunnel entrance heading
to the field from the Murphy Center. The lone wolf, which was named “Fury” by
head coach Tom O’Brien, will give the players something to touch as they enter the
field, a tradition that O’Brien started at Boston College and wanted to add to the
Wolfpack’s pregame ritual.
Fury checks in at 400 pounds and was crafted by NC State alumnus Dick Idol,
who also built the Wolf Statue in front of the Murphy Center.
NC State is 2-0 with Fury guarding the tunnel.
INJURIES ABUNDANT FOR PACK IN 2007
When looking at the number of key players who missed time with injuries last season, it’s almost surprising that the Wolfpack managed to turn the second half of its
season around.
Thirteen players who were starters at some time last season (or in the case of
tight end Anthony Hill, a projected starter) missed a total of 44 games with injuries
in 2007. Six of those starters missed multiple games.
Several key reserves also missed time with injuries last season. In all, the Wolfpack medical staff performed 10 knee surgeries between the spring of 2007 and the
end of the year.
A handful of the players who were injured last season were also forced to miss
2008 spring workouts. Hill, TB Toney Baker and SS Javon Walker all continued to
recover from knee surgery this spring, while quarterback Daniel Evans sat out with a
shoulder injury.
LIKE FATHER LIKE SON
Five members of the current Wolfpack squad have fathers who played at NC State.
Andrew and Daniel Evans’ father Johnny (1974-77) was an All-American at punter
and also played quarterback.
Josh Milinichik’s father Joe (1982-85) was an All-ACC performer on the offensive

BOWL QUALIFICATION
Eighteen Wolfpack football players have received their degrees from NC State in
the last two graduation ceremonies (December of 2007 and May of 2008). Three of
those graduates still have eligibility remaining and will compete for Tom O’Brien’s
squad this season while taking postgraduate courses.
Cornerback Jeremy Gray, quarterback Daniel Evans and wide receiver Andrew
Evans are all NC State graduates. Nine other current players are on track to graduate in December of 2008.

CROSSING THE LINE
One of the keys for the Wolfpack in 2008 spring drills was to make sure that the
“right people were in the right positions” according to head coach Tom O’Brien.
The first step towards accomplishing that goal was to move several players to different positions.
Two players who started on the defensive line last season, Ted Larsen and John
Bedics, crossed over to the offensive side of the ball this spring and both were
successful at their new positions. Bedics started at left defensive tackle in the first
three games of 2007, while Larsen started the Boston College and Clemson games
at tackle.
Larsen has started at center and Bedics at right guard in every game so far in
2008.
Wide receiver Koyal George also crossed the line in the spring, but this time went
from offense to defense. George, who saw action in 10 games at wideout in 2007,
including his first career touchdown, will lineup at cornerback this fall after working
at the position in the spring, as well.
SELL OUT CITY
For the eighth straight season, NC State sold out of its season tickets. Season
ticket sales have increased each of the last eight years at NC State and were up
nearly 14,000 this season from the 1999 season.
The capacity of Carter-Finley Stadium has been increased to 57,583 with the
addition of the north endzone seating.

LEARNING FROM THE PROS
NC State’s coaching staff not only has experience on the collegiate level, but has
spent valuable time in the National Football League as well. The Wolfpack’s 2008
staff has 16 years of NFL full-time coaching experience on both sides of the ball.
Offensive coordinator Dana Bible spent four years in the NFL while defensive coordinator Mike Archer was there for seven years and Mike Reed is a five-year NFL
coaching veteran. In addition, running backs coach Jason Swepson has done three
NFL internships.
The Wolfpack staff’s combined NFL coaching experience ranks as the third-highest in the ACC.
HE KEEPS GOING ... AND GOING ... AND GOING
It’s a nickname that’s stuck.
When the 2007 season began, Jamelle Eugene was third in line at the tailback
position, behind upperclassmen Toney Baker and Andre Brown. After Baker suffered a season-ending injury in the season opener, Eugene moved up to second.
When Brown broke his foot in the sixth game of the season, Eugene stood alone
at the position. His response? He played 445 snaps in the last seven games (63.5
per contest), posting three 100+yard rushing games and averaged 83.7 yards per
game.
In the win over North Carolina, Eugene rushed for 159 yards on 32 carries and
against Virginia he was in for an amazing 76 snaps. It was around that point in the
season that head coach Tom O’Brien started calling Eugene “the Energizer Bunny,”

EARLY ENROLLMENT
Two freshmen on the depth chart enrolled with the Wolfpack in January 2008
and got a headstart on the season. Cornerback Dominique Ellis and linebacker
Dwayne Maddox were enrolled and able to go through the offseason conditioning program and both of them went through spring practice, in addition to getting a headstart academically.
Ellis is backing up Jeremy Gray at corner and Maddox is the backup to Nate
Irving at weakside linebacker.
FACING BOWL TEAMS
The 2008 schedule has NC State facing seven teams that advanced to bowls last
season and will face opponents from five different conferences - the NCC, the
CAA, Conference USA, the Big East and the SEC.
BLOCK THAT KICK

2008 GAME REVIEWS
South Carolina 34, NC State 0
NC State 34, William & Mary 24
August 28, 2008 • 8:00 p.m.
Williams-Brice Stadium Stadium • Columbia, S.C. • 80,616
September 6, 2008 • 6:00 p.m.
Carter-Finley Stadium • Raleigh, N.C. • 56,694
The final score said 34-0, but this game was a defensive struggle well into
the third quarter before South Carolina finally pulled away. Neither team
scored until the Gamecocks took advantage of an NC State turnover at the
Wolfpack 12-yard line. That drive produced zero net yards and resulted only
in a field goal with 20 seconds left before halftime, giving South Carolina a
3-0 lead at intermission.
Harrison Beck came off the bench and jump-started an NC State offense that
struggled for most of the first six quarters of the 2008 season, leading the
Wolfpack past William & Mary 34-24.
The Wolfpack held the upper hand in field position throughout the first
half. The Gamecocks' deepest penetration into NC State territory prior to
their field goal late in the half was to the Wolfpack 34. Before the NC State
defense finally wore out in the fourth quarter, South Carolina's longest drive
of the game was just 34 yards. The Gamecocks' first four drives combined to
yield just 32 total yards. USC had just 102 total yards at halftime and just 127
yards with 5:37 left in the third quarter.
The roof finally caved in on the NC State defense at that point. South
Carolina scored on its final four possessions of the game — a field goal and
three consecutive touchdowns — to make the game a blowout, but the two
defenses dominated most of the game.
The Wolfpack defense, in addition to limiting the yardage for three quarters,
picked off four passes from quarterback Tommy Beecher — the Wolfpack's
first four-interception game in eight years — and sacked Beecher five times.
Weakside linebacker Nate Irving had 10 tackles, including nine solo hits and
two for losses, and intercepted Beecher late in the first quarter to stop a
South Carolina drive that had reached the NC State 34-yard line.
Offensively, the Wolfpack ran into a talented, swarming South Carolina
defense that held the Pack to just 138 total yards. Senior running back Andre
Brown rushed for 101 yards on 21 carries, the sixth 100-yard rushing game
of his career, moving him into 11th-place in Wolfpack history in career rushing yards.
Midway through the second quarter, on NC State's deepest penetration into
USC territory of the game, redshirt-freshman quarterback Russell Wilson
suffered a gade 3 concussion when he took an inadvertent knee to the back
of the helmet and was carried off the field on a stretcher. NC State managed
just 61 yards of offense the rest of the game.

Beck entered the game with 4:50 remaining in the first half. After a threeand-out on his first series, Beck engineered scoring drives on five of the
Wolfpack's next six possessions to put the game out of reach. Beck completed 17 of 25 passes for 246 yards and two touchdowns.
Prior to Beck's insertion into the lineup, the Wolfpack offense was virtually
stagnant, amassing just 33 yards of total offense, including 12 yards passing, and zero first downs. NC State's lone score to that point was set up
when Nate Irving recovered a William & Mary fumble and returned it to the
six-yard line. Andre Brown carried twice from there, gaining three yards on
each, to give the Wolfpack its first TD of the season.
The Wolfpack offense clicked into gear on its final possession of the first
half. Jeremy Gray's interception gave NC State possession at its own 45, and
Beck capped the drive by completing back-to-back 22-yard passes to Owen
Spencer and Jarvis Williams, the latter being Williams' first college reception.
A 43-yard William & Mary field goal cut the lead to 14-3 just over three
minutes into the second half, but Beck completed four consecutive pass
attempts on the Pack's next possession, including a 47-yard bomb to T.J.
Graham, to highlight a six-play, 77-yard touchdown drive that gave NC State
a 21-3 lead with 5:18 left in the third quarter.
William & Mary drove 71 yards for a touchdown on the ensuing possession,
but Beck and the Wolfpack offense were not finished. A 57-yard drive resulted in a 39-yard field goal from Josh Czajkowski. William & Mary fumbled on
the first play of the ensuing drive to set up a 33-yarder from Czajkowski and
a 27-10 NC State lead. Beck then hit all three of his passes for 62 yards on
the Pack's next possession, a 66-yard march that resulted in a 10-yard touchdown run from Curtis Underwood.
That made it 34-10 with 5:56 remaining. A pair of late touchdowns by
William & Mary made the final margin 10 points, but the outcome was
already decided by that point.

Clemson overcame a misfire on the first play of the game, took the lead
four-and-a-half minutes later, and never looked back, dealing NC State a 27-9
defeat at Death Valley.
The Wolfpack stayed close for much of the game, thanks in large part to
another strong defensive performance, but missed chances on offense and
special teams proved too much to overcome. In particular, two third-quarter
penetrations into the red zone resulted in just three points, taking the steam
out of the offense on a hot, humid day in upstate South Carolina. Clemson's
offense killed the clock in the fourth quarter, scoring 10 points in the process.
Many in the crowd of 76,500 were still entering into the stadium when Nate
Irving intercepted Cullen Harper on the game's first play from scrimmage
and returned it 33 yards for a touchdown. The PAT attempt was blocked, and
the Wolfpack had a 6-0 lead that lasted less than five minutes. On the ensuing possession, the Tigers marched 76 yards on nine plays to take a 7-6 lead.
Three second-quarter bombs from Harper helped Clemson open up an 11point lead. The first was a 28-yard completion to Jacoby Ford that set up
a 22-yard field goal by Mark Buchholz. On the Tigers' next possession, on
back-to-back snaps, Harper hit Aaron Kelly for 31 yards to the Wolfpack 28yard line, and C.J. Spiller for 28 yards for a touchdown.
The Pack penetrated midfield twice before intermission, reaching the Tigers'
49 and 45, and no further. That changed after halftime. Trailing 17-6, NC
State took the opening kickoff in the third quarter and drove 68 yards on 12
plays, all the way to the Clemson eight-yard line. The drive stalled thanks to
a bad snap from center on second down and an incompletion on third down.
The resulting 25-yard field-goal attempt went wide left, making the drive all
for naught.
The Wolfpack defense stopped Clemson on its next possession, and the
Wolfpack offense again drove the length of the field, all the way to the
Clemson five-yard line. This time, Josh Czajkowski's 22-yard field goal cut
the Tigers' lead to 17-9, but that was as close as NC State got.
Buchholz kicked a 31-yard field goal two minutes into the fourth quarter to
make it 20-9, and Clemson salted the game away with a 96-yard, grind-it-out
touchdown drive that took 8:07 off the clock and left the Wolfpack 18 points
behind with 81 seconds remaining.

It's not how you start, but how you finish. East Carolina got off to a quick
start, but NC State finished with a bang to hand the 15th-ranked Pirates
their first loss of the season, a 30-24 overtime heartbreaker at Carter-Finley
Stadium.
East Carolina jumped to a 7-0 first-quarter lead when Van Eskridge intercepted a Russell Wilson pass and returned it 23 yards for a touchdown.
Staggered but unbowed, NC State answered late in the first quarter, driving
46 yards after a 20-yard ECU punt and tying the game on the first play of the
second quarter, a four-yard TD pass from Russell Wilson to Andre Brown.
After the two teams swapped three-and-outs, the Pirates struck for another
big scoring play, a 39-yard pass from Pat Pinkney to Davon Drew to take a
14-7 second-quarter lead.
Both offenses came out of the locker rooms clicking to start the third quarter.
The Wolfpack took the opening kickoff and drove 60 yards in seven plays,
tying the game at 14-14 on a 20-yard strike from Wilson to Jarvis Williams.
East Carolina responded swiftly on the ensuing possession. Pinkney began
the drive by completing three consecutive passes for 26 yards, and Norman
Whitley finished it off with 42-yard touchdown dash to give the Pirates the
lead again at 21-14.
The game came down to the fourth quarter, and NC State up huge on both
sides of the ball. The quarter began with a pair of memorable goal-line
stands. ECU had 1st-and-goal from the four-yard line on the first and could
not score, with Robbie Leonard and J.C. Neal smothering Jon Williams for a
three-yard loss on fourth down. The Pirates forced a three-and-out and then
drove right back inside the Wolfpack 10, advancing as far as 2nd-and-goal
from the three, before settling for a 21-yard field goal from Ben Hartman and
a 24-17 lead with 4:27 remaining.
T.J. Graham returned the ECU kickoff from the goal line to the Wolfpack 45,
and Wilson took over form there with the game on the line. On the first play
of the drive, he passed 26 yards to Williams. Next play, 17 yards to Brown,
all the way to the 12. A three-yard scramble by Wilson and an incompletion made it 3rd-and-7 from the ECU nine-yard line, but Wilson hit tight end
George Bryan for eight yards to the one to make it 1st-and-goal. A false-start
penalty pushed the ball back to the five, and Wilson hit Bryan from there for
the game-tying TD.
The defense stepped up again in overtime. On 1st-and-10 from the Wolfpack
11, Shea McKeen sacked Pinkney, forcing a fumble that Willie Young recovered to finish ECU's possession. NC State took over, and after a one-yard
loss on a quarterback draw by Wilson, Brown carried 16 yards to the 10, and
then 10 yards for the game-winning touchdown.
