2007 Wolfpack Roster
2007 Outlook 2007 WOLFPACK WOLFPACK OFFENSE Halfback Offensive Line Once again, the halfback position is one of the strongest and deepest on the field for the Wolfpack in 2007. Two talented runners with over 1,000 career yards return for their junior campaigns: Toney Baker and Andre Brown. Baker was the Pack’s leading rusher last season with 688 yards and also caught 21 passes for another 177 yards. Baker had one of the top performances of any Wolfpack player this spring. Three starters from last year’s offensive line have completed their eligibility, but three other veterans with starting experience will be back in action. Manning the guard spots will be returning starters Kalani Heppe and Curtis Crouch. Heppe, a senior, has played in 23 career contests and played 837 snaps. Crouch enters his junior campaign with 19 games played and a dozen starts - 804 total snaps in all. Senior center Luke Lathan has battled various injuries throughout his career, but has played in 16 total games and started eight. Brown was close behind his backfield partner last season with 658 total yards, leading the team in rushing seven times last season. Daniel Evans Jamelle Eugene will also add his considerable talents to the mix in the backfield. The fleet-footed redshirt sophomore played in all 12 games last season and had a solid performance in the spring, leading all players in the Red/White spring game with 168 yards on 15 carries. Backing up Lathan will be sophomore Andy Barbee, while Yomi Ojo and Gary Gregory, who redshirted last season, will back up the guard spots. Two new starters will man the tackle slots. Julian Williams did not see action last year, while Jerrail McCuller played in just Curtis Crouch Fullback Quarterback RECORDS one contest. Backing up those players will be Meares Green, who has seen action at guard and tackle, and Garrett Kline. Senior Patrick Bedics will return at fullback, where he played in every game last season, working mainly as a blocker. Backing up Bedics will be John Kane and redshirt freshman Cedric Hickman. Kane played in all 12 games last season, gaining a reputation as a special teams stopper, but missed spring drills after undergoing shoulder surgery. Hickman redshirted the 2007 campaign at linebacker, but moved back to fullback in spring workouts. Heading into fall camp, the quarterback position is up for grabs between a trio of talented players. Redshirt junior Daniel Evans could have the upper hand, after starting nine games last season and completing 163 passes. In 2007 spring drills, Evans got some stiff competition from two players who sat out last season. Justin Burke who redshirted as a rookie last season, completed 56% of his throws in three spring scrimmages and threw the White team’s only touchdown pass in the Red/White spring game. Redshirt sophomore Harrison Beck sat out after transferring from Nebraska, and although he was less accurate, threw for 351 yards and four touchdowns in those three scrimmages. Patrick Bedics Jamelle Eugene Wide Receiver The wide receiver position will benefit from the leadership of two talented seniors: Darrell Blackman and John Dunlap. Blackman was a first-team All-ACC performer as a specialist in 2007 and pulled down 27 catches for 358 yards. Dunlap tallied 30 receptions for 392 yards and scored four touchdowns. HISTORY Tight End Senior Anthony Hill was a second-team All-ACC performer last season after leading the team with 45 receptions - 15 more than any other Wolfpack player. Hill will have another senior lining up with him at tight end this season, as converted quarterback Marcus Stone looked strong at his new position during spring workouts, leading the team in receptions for one scrimmage. Matt Kushner played in all 12 games last season, serving mostly as a blocker. Entering fall camp, those two seniors will be flanked by several talented, yet inexperienced players - a sophomore and three freshmen. That trio should make the tight end spot one of the strongest on the offense for NC State in 2007. Matt Kushner 38 Donald Bowens was the only true freshman to start a game last season and finished his rookie year with 16 grabs. Jarvis Williams played in one game, but ended up earning a medical redshirt for 2006. Darrell Davis redshirted the season, while Owen Spencer joined the team in January and went through spring drills. 2007 WOLFPACK FOOTBALL John Dunlap WOLFPACK DEFENSE/SPECIAL TEAMS Linebacker Four Wolfpack defensive linemen have been drafted by the NFL in the last two years, and two seniors are hoping to add to that number by having great 2007 campaigns. Tackle Demario Pressley has started the last 23 games in which he’s played, the longest streak on the team. Pressley notched seven tackles behind the line of scrimmage last season. Senior Martrel Brown had a strong junior campaign - his first as a starter and his first at defensive end - leading the team with seven sacks. Although three seniors are listed as the starting linebackers heading into fall camp, only one has significant experience at the position. LeRue Rumph has started 17 games at LB in the last two years and is slated to fill the strong side in 2007. In the middle, senior James Martin II hopes for an injury-free campaign, after a broken wrist kept him out of the last eight games last year, his first at linebacker after playing at defensive end. Ernest Jones, has played mainly on special teams during his career, but played 342 snaps and started one game at the weak side a year ago. Young, relatively inexperienced players, however, will cover the other D-Line spots. Redshirt sophomore Ted Larsen will play behind Pressley after seeing limited action in 11 contests last season. Redshirt freshman Audi Augustin will back up Brown. Redshirt sophomore Ray Michel gained solid experience on special teams and from scrimmage last year and will back up Martin. Redshirt freshmen Nate Irving and John Ware will fight for time at the strong and weak sides respectively. Senior Littleton Wright and sophomore Willie Young will battle for the other end spot. Wright played sparingly last season, while Young was in for 469 snaps during his rookie campaign, tallying 60 tackles and leading the team with 15 quarterback pressures. Ted Larsen Defensive Back Safety Miguel Scott is the most experienced member of the 2007 Wolfpack squad, boasting 1,135 snaps in 33 games with 21 starts for his career. He will be the leader of a secondary that boasts solid experience. DaJuan Morgan, a special teams demon each of the last two seasons, is slated to get the nod at strong safety, where he logged 482 snaps and made 82 stops a year ago. That tackle total is the highest for any player returning for 2007. Daniel Evans could continue to hold, while walkons Michael Maurer and Corey Tedder will line up at long snapper. Neal has more experience, as he started four games and played in 306 snaps from scrimmage plus special teams last season. Neal, who has brought his speed over from the safety spot. Letterwinners Offense Defense Specialty Total RECORDS At the other tackle slot, redshirt sophomore Alan Michael Cash hopes to build on the experience gained toward the end of last season and will battle junior John Bedics at left tackle. Bedics has played seven games in his two-year career. 2007 TEAM INFO 2007 WOLFPACK Defensive Line Darrell Blackman is NC State’s all-time career leader with a 28.63 yard kickoff return average and ranks fifth in career punt return yardage. The first-team all-conference performer has led the lead in KORs each of the past two years and hopes to do it again as a senior. Josh Czajkowski 2007 WOLFPACK FOOTBALL 39 Noting the Pack 2007 WOLFPACK Champions Tom O’Brien’s goals for the Wolfpack football program have been well documented. In fact, almost every time he has spoken publicly since being named the head coach at NC State, he has reiterated them. “We want to be champions in the classroom, in the community and on the football field.” It’s a simple mantra, but one that should be much more difficult to put into operation. However, O’Brien has a proven track record of living up to each portion of that goal. Here are a few examples: RECORDS Under O’Brien’s guidance, Boston College won the 2004 American Football Coaches’ Assocation’s graduation rate trophy. Seven other times during his 10-year tenure, the Eagles won honorable mention in the graduation rate battle (1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006). Here’s a look at the geographic numbers for NC State in the past decade: States Year Represented 2007 16 2006 10 2005 9 2004 9 2003 13 2002 13 2001 14 2000 15 1999 14 1998 15 Following the 2005 season, USA Today began to re-order its college football polls by re-ranking the top 25 teams based on graduation rates. In the very first revised poll, O’Brien’s squad came out number one in the country. When the publication re-ordered the poll again midway through the 2006 season, BC was once again on top. In the Community Although NC State’s athletic department has a well-established outreach program (ImPACK), O’Brien has pushed to ensure that the young men on his team give back to the community on a regular basis. In the first few months after his arrival, he and his players served lunch at the Raleigh Rescue Mission, hosted a sports clinic for foster kids and took part in various other service projects. Tom O’Brien’s 2004 team posted the highest GPA of any football team in the country. Here, he receives the trophy to honor that accomplishment from the American Football Coaches Association. O’Brien is on the Board of Directors for the Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots Foundation. HISTORY The 2007 NC State preseason roster lists players from 16 different states, plus an international signee (Germany). That marks the most states represented on the Wolfpack roster in the past 10 years. This season, NC State boasts players from North Carolina (52), Florida (23), Virginia (10), Pennsylvania (8), Alabama, California, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, South Carolina, Texas and one player from Germany. In the Classroom 40 All Over the Map International 1 1 Defensive Line Feels a Draft The bad news is that NC State has had to replace several talented players on the defensive line in the past two years, including three first or second-team AllACC performers. The good news is that if anybody starts missing those players too badly, they can probably catch them playing on Sunday afternoon. On the Football Field The lists of accomplishments by O’Brien’s teams at Boston College is lengthy, but there are a In the past two years, four Wolfpack couple that stand out. He also coached BC teams that won seven straight bowl games at BC, a mark that is the first round, while this past spring, tackle tied for second in NCAA history for a coach at one school. Tank Tyler was a third-round pick. 2007 WOLFPACK FOOTBALL A Bountiful Backfield Tailbacks Toney Baker and Andre Brown joined an elite group of Wolfpack greats last season, when they each crossed the 1,000-yard mark in terms of career rushing. Only eight other times in NC State history had a pair of players each boasting at least 1,000 career rushing yards played on the same team. Baker and Brown are the youngest 1,000-yard duo to ever play for the Pack, as both were sophomores when they reached that total. Entering their junior campaigns, the Baker/Brown tandem boasts 2,559 combined yards (1,234 for Baker and 1,325 for Brown). Here’s a look at all the Wolfpack 1,000-yard rushers who shared the backfield with a teammate who had also reached that milestone: Year(s) Players (Year) 2006 1999 1995-96 1984 1976-77 1973 1957 Toney Baker (So.) & Andre Brown (So.) Note: Years listed are only those when both players had reached 1,000-yard rushing mark, not all the years the duos played together. The Hands of Stone The Wolfpack coaching staff is hoping that the hands of Stone ... well ... aren’t hands of stone! And judging by senior Marcus Stone’s performance in 2007 spring drills, they won’t be disappointed. Best of the Bowlers Teams coached by Tom O’Brien earned seven consecutive bowl victories at Boston College. That number ranks second in NCAA history for a head coach at the same school - better than other legendary coaches such as Bear Bryant, Joe Paterno and Boddy Dodd. Here’s a look at the records for coaching teams that earned consecutive bowl victories: Coach Bobby Bowden Tom O’Brien Terry Donahue Bobby Dodd Paul “Bear” Bryant Joe Paterno Bob Pruett School Florida State Boston College UCLA Georgia Tech Alabama Penn State Marshall Years Bowls 1985-95 11 2000-2006 *7 1982-88 7 1951-56 6 1975-80 6 1979-83 5 1998-2002 5 The X- (and O) Man: Stone came to NC State as a highly-touted quarterback out Wolfpack head coach Tom of high school who had earned O’Brien was ranked as one of Parade All-American honors. He enters fall camps looking to see substantial playing time. RECORDS Toney Baker and Andre Brown are the youngest NC State duo ever to reach 1,000 career yards each. 41 2007 WOLFPACK RECORDS Harrison Beck, Justin Burke and Daniel Evans will battle for the quarterback job in fall camp. QB or Not QB Tom O’Brien will release his first depth chart several days before the Central Florida game on September 1. Until that point, no starter at any position could be etched in stone. That includes the most visible position on the field - quarterback. The Wolfpack enters preseason camp with three quarterbacks and two ‘or’s’ on the depth chart at signal caller. It could be Daniel Evans ... OR Harrison Beck ... OR Justin Burke. All three will have a chance to earn the position once practice begins in early August. Evans, a redshirt junior, has the upper hand in terms of experience. The son of former Wolfpack All-American Johnny Evans, he started nine games in 2006 and completed 163 passes. He is the only one of the three who has ever taken a snap at NC State. HISTORY Redshirt sophomore Harrison Beck does have some limited collegiate experience. He sat out after transferring from Nebraska, where he saw action in two games late in the 2005 season. He threw for 351 yards and four touchdowns in three scrimmages. Justin Burke is the true rookie in the mix, but gained valuable experience in practice as a redshirt last season. Burke completed 56% of his throws in three spring scrimmages and threw the White team’s only touchdown pass in the Red/White spring game. Big Cleats to Fill It’s been a long time since anybody besides John Deraney kicked an extra point or a field goal for NC State. It’s been an even longer time since anyone besides Deraney punted for the Wolfpack. But that is about to change. 42 In the past three seasons, Deraney has accounted for 28% of the team’s total points (199 or 723) and took care of all of the punting. But Deraney hopes to be kicking for the Detroit Lions this fall, which leaves a big gap on the Wolfpack depth chart. Heading into fall camp, redshirt freshman Josh Czajkowski is slated to take over the 2007 WOLFPACK FOOTBALL placekicking duties, while incoming junior college transfer Jeff Ruiz hopes to line up at punter. Czajkowski got tons of reps in spring drills, kicking a 40-yard field goal and connecting on seven extra points in the Red/White spring game. Ruiz was a JUCO All-American with a 43.3 yard average last season at Southwestern Junior College. Welcome Back! Woody Jones, Class of ‘41, was the oldest attendee at the reunion. His grandson, John Kane, is a current member of the Wolfpack squad. High Rate of Returns HIS- Senior Darrell Blackman enters his senior campaign with the chance to become one of the top kickoff returners in the history of the Atlantic Coast Conference. For his career, Blackman has returned 40 kicks for 1,145 yards - a 28.6 yard average. That is the top career average in Wolfpack history and ranks second in ACC history. RECORDS Jerricho Cotchery, now with the New York Jets, greeted young wideouts Donald Bowens and Owen Spencer. 2007 WOLFPACK More than 300 former players came back for the Red/White Spring game. Those who attended practice on Friday afternoon had a picture made with the 2007 squad. One of Tom O’Brien’s top priorities when he took over the helm of NC State football was to reunite former Wolfpack players and make sure they knew they were an important part of the program. He and his staff decided to invite as many former players as they could find back for a reunion the weekend of the Red/White Spring Football game in April. Even O’Brien was overwhelmed by the turnout. More than 300 former players came back, with many attending practice on Friday afternoon, even more enjoying a reception in the Vaughn Towers press box and then even more attending the game on Saturday. Attendees covered the past seven decades of Wolfpack football, ranging from Woody Jones, Class of 1941, to Tank Tyler, who was drafted in April. O’Brien has said that the reunion will become an annual tradition and looks for an even larger turnout next year. Blackman, who was a first-team All-ACC performer as a specialist in 2006, has been named a preseason first-team All-American by Street & Smith. He currently ranks 12th among active league players in career receptions with 51, even though he has been at wide receiver just one season. Here’s a look at the top career kickoff return averages in ACC history: KOR Avg. 30.7 28.6 26.7 26.7 25.5 25.4 24.7 24.7 24.6 24.6 2007 WOLFPACK FOOTBALL Darrell Blackman currently ranks second in ACC history in career kickoff return average.
