Wolfgang Klafki har med sin teori om den kategoriale dannelse fået klassikerstatus i
danske pædagogiske kredse, på linje med Rousseau, Pestalozzi, Fröbel og andre store
navne i pædagogikkens historie. Selv om Klafkis værk bygger på den klassiske
åndsvidenskabelige teori, har han indarbejdet centrale aspekter fra nyere pædagogiske
retninger i sin kritisk-konstruktive teori. Med de senere års tilbagevenden til en mere
kulturorienteret undervisning og den fornyede fokusering på fagligheden er Klafki efter
flere år ‘i kulden’ igen kommet ind i varmen. Klafki støtter imidlertid ikke de
nykonservative tendenser med den ensidige fokusering på fagene og fagligheden. Han er
ikke fagdidaktiker, men almen didaktiker. I sin videreudvikling af den kategoriale
dannelsesteori viser han, hvordan erfaringer har en vigtig placering i al læring, men det er
netop på baggrund af værdiorienteringer, der udspringer af etiske normer. Undervisning,
der ikke vedkender sig en bagvedliggende dannelsesteori, er for Klafki meningsløs.
