Service design approach
• We explored student needs through service
design methodologies together with a design
agency. The library was lucky to be chosen as
one of four university driven projects in 2012
when Helsinki was the World Design Capital.
• Service design aims at designing the user
experience so that the services meet both the
needs of the users and attain the goals set by
the service provider.

Customer profiling
• Customer profiling was motive-based and reflected the customer’s use of
the services. Therefore one person could belong to several customer
profiles.
• Customer profiling was carried out on the basis of information gained
through the probes, group discussions and observation.
• Four central customer profiles emerged in the course of the mapping:

• 2005 discussions between the library
coordination, faculty deans and librarians
• 2006 The HU acquired the building site
• 2007 competition (using a lottery)
• 2010 beginning of the construction and
service design project
• 2011 the collections taped by RFID
• 2012 opening of the new library
