From the Chairman and the President
An organization endowed with the prodigious gifts, talents, and history of the Curtis Institute
of Music might be tempted to relax its ambitions on occasion—to relish, for example,
the accolades from an especially thrilling concert or to savor the results of a well-executed
fundraising campaign. Perhaps, even, to “coast” on its good name.
But we like to think that, on the cusp of its 90th year, Curtis has reached a point
of departure—not arrival. The success of our 2008–2013 Strategic Plan, including the
programs, facilities, and supporters it has engendered, has given us a new baseline for
continuing to nurture the world’s finest young musicians. We embrace the responsibility
of our heritage—and the opportunity of this moment—with enthusiasm.
The 2013–14 fiscal year reflected this mindset. Ever true to our artistic standards and
“learn by doing” philosophy, our students performed passionately, creatively—and often.
We embrace the
responsibility of
our heritage—and
the opportunity
of this moment—
with enthusiasm.
Through nearly 200 performances in Philadelphia alone, they delighted audiences and
honed their abilities.
Our digital initiatives experienced exponential growth with the launch of the school’s
first-ever massive open online course (MOOC) in partnership with Coursera: Offerings
focusing on Beethoven’s piano sonatas and Western music history. In all, more than 68,000
participants from 139 countries joined in.
Curtis On Tour took performances across America, as well as to Costa Rica and several
European venues; and robust collaborations added dimensions to our instructional program
and engaged listeners in new ways.
By the time we graduated our 81st class in May, we had much to celebrate, including
the centenary of distinguished faculty member and alumna Eleanor Sokoloff (Piano ’38).
In her inimitable, tenacious way, Mrs. Sokoloff reminded us to honor the roots that make
Curtis so special, while looking ahead to the years of great music and promise before us.
In reflecting on this last year of our partnership as chairman and president, we are
humbled by what we have accomplished as a community. Our financial summary for 2013–14
shows a strong and healthy organization, and the listings of our donors bear testament
to the many generous connections, near and far, to the school. We are grateful for the
dedication of our faculty, proud of our exceptional alumni, and inspired by our students
each and every day. Thank you to all who are part of Curtis’s family.

Financial results for the fiscal year ended May 31, 2014 were on budget, which included an anticipated draw against the operating expense
reserve in the amount of $232,000. This results in an operating expense reserve available for use in future years of $1,028,000. The operating
reserve was accumulated over several years to address downturns in the economy that might impact the Curtis endowment and the draw
available to fund operations, including the opening and initial years of Lenfest Hall. Curtis also maintains a capital expenditure reserve
account of $1 million for unexpected capital repairs.

“Why do I give to Curtis?
Excellence. I mean, how many
organizations in Philadelphia,
even around the world, can
you put in a category of
‘best in class’? Curtis is in a
very small group of special
places that truly promote
and pursue excellence as an
ideal—and then achieve it.”

Celebrating Transformational Philanthropy
The 2014 Grand Season Finale Gala—chaired by Fran and
Leon Levy, John J. Medveckis, and Mark and Robin Rubenstein
on the occasion of the final Curtis Symphony Orchestra concert
of the season—raised an unprecedented $838,220 from more
than 175 donors, more than doubling the proceeds of last year’s
landmark success. The gala honored Marguerite and H. F.
“Gerry” Lenfest for their transformational impact on Curtis.
Thanks to their extraordinary leadership and generosity, Curtis
has enjoyed a period of tremendous success highlighted by
a campus doubled in size, eleven new endowed faculty chairs,
the launch of an international touring initiative, a healthy
governance structure, and sound financial footing.
In recognition of their exceptional support and vision, Curtis
has created the Lenfest Student Financial Assistance Fund with
proceeds from the gala. This endowment fund provides critical
aid to students and their families and helps offset the burdensome
costs these talented young musicians face as they pursue their
dream of a Curtis education.

The Curtis Annual Fund
The Curtis Institute of Music gratefully acknowledges the gifts from the following music lovers to the Curtis Annual Fund between June 1, 2013,
and May 31, 2014. Each gift plays an important part in bridging the gap between operating expenses and endowment revenue, thereby
enabling Curtis to offer merit-based full-tuition scholarships and continue its most important programs.

Engaging Audiences Around the Globe
In 2013–14 Curtis heightened its global reach as never before through new, innovative, and successful
programs to bring Curtis beyond Philadelphia in person and online. Curtis On Tour and the school’s
new online stage, Curtis Performs, brought the onstage experience of Curtis to life for myriad
audiences to great effect. And when school was not in session, Curtis Summerfest welcomed aspiring
and avocational musicians from thirteen countries, ranging in age from 11 to 89. Nearly 200 Summerfest
participants were mentored by Curtis alumni, students, and faculty, among others. Meanwhile Curtis’s
two massive open online courses (MOOCs) developed in partnership with Coursera, the first offered by
any classical music conservatory, enrolled more than 68,000—17 times as many students as have ever
attended Curtis. These courses built advocacy and awareness for the art form among an international
audience of enthusiasts and positioned Curtis in the vanguard of innovative institutions.
“One of the world’s most elite music
academies is offering courses online—and
thousands of people of different musical
abilities are signing up. Can web learning
make classical music accessible to all?”

“Receiving a tuition-free
education at Curtis is one of
the greatest gifts I’ve been
given—period. When I think
about all the ways that my
experience at the school
has enhanced my career and
my life it’s impossible not
to imagine giving back in
some way. It brings me joy
to offer my time and my
resources to this special place.”

“There are pivotal events in
your life—weddings, the birth
of children, certain special
performances, and for me,
Curtis. It was a game-changer
in my life. I give to secure
its place as a world-class
conservatory, and to ensure
its future. Giving to Curtis
gives my husband and me
a deep sense of purpose.”

Catalyst for Creative Dialogue
The innovative new-music ensemble eighth blackbird was in residence at Curtis for four weeks during the 2013–14 school year, the second
year of its three-year residency supported by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The ensemble has become an integral part of the Curtis
community through coachings, master classics, seminars, performances, and many other activities. The members of eighth blackbird
continue to encourage students to push the boundaries of audience interaction and to communicate more effectively. The residency
builds on Curtis’s “learn by doing” philosophy and its focus on inventing careers for the 21st century. With these principles and Curtis’s
strong programs in contemporary music and community engagement as the basis, eighth blackbird teaches Curtis students to be
entrepreneurial about their careers and to connect more deeply with audiences and their community.
