After issues with the design of an earlier store, Firebirds wisely offered us an all inclusive
project for the company’s Northlake store. We were hired for design/build and given the
tasks of handling signage, music systems, security, fire alarm systems, décor packages, lease
negotiations, as well as many other aspects of the project. We jumped in with both feet, ultimately came in at more than $50,000 dollars under budget, and missed the original date by
only one day. We ran this project concurrently with another design/build Firebirds restaurant in Memphis, TN. Between the two, we had our hands full for several months.

We handled our 5th Firebirds Rocky Mountain Grill project in true TST
fashion. When we immediately saw some “red flags,” we double checked
everything with our client. Our experience enabled us to make changes we
knew the client would want. Even with more than 97 changes, TST still
made the original completion date.

“The Short pump location was our second mall project for the Firebirds concept after
the Durham project at the Streets of Southpoint. The most challenging task was to
identify quality subcontractors in the area and hire them because there were two
mega malls being built at the time with over 75 tenants in each all doing up fit work.
Needless to say, manpower, equipment, and materials were also among the other
shortages in Richmond at the time. Fortunately, we were able to self perform the
critical path items and open on schedule with the mall over Labor Day weekend.”

“Memphis was a great project for TST. Anytime you can go into an existing restaurant with power, water and gas, you are ahead of the game. Of course there
wasn’t much left of the original Don Pablo’s when we got through with it but,
you couldn’t tell what it used to be when we were finished with it. An entirely
new interior, new kitchen, new face lift, manicured landscaping, and new parking lot made this ‘big box’ look like a slice right out of the Colorado landscape.”

When my friend Steve Starr at Little Diversified Architectural Consultants was hired
to develop a new store concept for Krispy Kreme, he called and asked me to work with
him on it. The challenge was to build an entire store mock-up for the CEO to review
and approve. The architects would draw something on a “napkin” that morning, and
TST would build it that afternoon. The project was fun. The deadline was nervewracking. But as expected, Steve and his team worked extremely well with me and
my team. We aced the client’s deadline, and as you can see, the concept looked great.

After the owners interviewed five groups for this project, we were selected as the negotiated GC. We went right to work, reviewed the drawings and found that with a few design
changes to the MEP systems, we could save the client $25,000. In looking out for the
client’s best interests, some people would say we could have shot ourselves in the foot. Unless we were able to redesign drawings, resubmit permit applications, and complete the
work within the original time frames, the owners would incur large penalties. In my book,
pulling this one off was nothing short of a miracle, but in the end, we did it and did it well.

Each restaurant is typically divided into three large rooms with the
bar and primary dining room centrally located while the two side
rooms are partitioned from the bar and dining area by etched glass.
Guests are attracted to the elegant, yet comfortable polished brass,
embroidered chairs and booths and hunter green and burgundy walls.

This was TST’s third Fox & Hound, so it should have been an easy project. But the client’s
decision to redesign the concept from front-to-back to create a more family-friendly atmosphere changed the drawings dramatically. With overhauls ranging from a new kitchen to
a new front of house, it was like building something we had never encountered. After the
fifth revision to the drawings and submission after submission to the city for permitting,
we completed the restaurant on the eightieth day of construction. We made it just in time
for the permit to be approved, and all the inspections to be finalized the next day.

Oneo was our first Design-Build/Turnkey restaurant project. We put together a
great team of architects and engineers, subcontractors, and vendors to handle
every aspect of this project. We took the lead on everything from lease negotiations to kitchen equipment and furniture. All our client had to do was show up
with pots and pans and start cooking. From lease execution on August 22nd
to turnover December 10th, TST designed it, permitted it, constructed it (50%
self-performed), equipped it, and furnished it, on time and under budget.

The Great Frame-Up was the kind of project we really enjoy doing. Our client came to us because
of our work at Oneo in the same shopping center and basically hired us on his gut feeling about us.
The most challenging part of his project was not the construction (completed in four weeks start to
finish), but rather getting fixtures from the franchise authorized dealer. Our client could not get his
custom-made fixtures in time for the store opening because of the fixture company’s work backlog.
Our solution was to build them and install them ourselves for the same price as the franchise’s
fixture company while construction was going on. Again, we came in on time and on budget.

custom-made furniture, TST contributed to the success of Zobo.tv every step of the way.

Construction of the Myers Middle School gymnasium was Phase I of a multi-phase
project. The students needed a modern gym that conformed to today’s ADA building codes and current standards for bleacher seating capacity and energy efficiency. Eric and his construction team built the gym from the ground up, creating not
only a top-notch space for the students’ use, but also plenty of storage for physical
education equipment and offices for the teachers. Today, the rest of the school
building has been demolished and rebuilt — but the gymnasium still stands.

The library, originally built in 1981, was in serious need of an upfit. Eric’s original proposal was to add an additional 9,000 square feet to the 30,000 square
foot building. The proposal came in under budget – so much so, in fact, that
the contractor team was asked to increase the addition by one-third the size,
to 12,000 square feet. The existing library was gutted, the electric and HVAC
systems were replaced, and a new roof and carpeting were added. Best of all, the
expanded project was completed in the time frame of the original proposal.

The Fort Stewart/Hunter Army Airfield complex is the U.S. Army’s premier heavy-force power projection
platform on the East Coast. It is home to the most highly trained and rapidly deployable mechanized force
in the world — the 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized), the “Iron Fist” of the XVIII Airborne Corps. The
airfield’s brass wanted a new, comfortable Exchange that would operate much like a civilian convenience
store. Eric’s team cleared the lot and built the store from the ground up, including a brick exterior and mett
al standing-seam roof. The contractors also built a complete gas station, adhering to the strict environmental guidelines demanded by the EPA. They installed the pumps and tanks and even created the durable
gas station canopy after the original canopy-maker bowed out of the project. The Army now considers this
Exchange a prototype for next-generation Exchange stores at military bases across the country.

Not only does Wolfman Pizza provide the freshest and most delicious
variety of pizzas in Charlotte, its Myers Park location exudes comfort
and elegance not normally found in a pizza restaurant. The open
ceiling, beautiful wood bar and rich textures and colors in the seating
area make the room feel especially large, open and inviting. The big
screen TV on the back wall, combined with plenty of seating room in
the front, encourages visitors to pull up a chair and stay awhile.
