FEATURING DR. GARY P. ZOLA
Executive Director of The Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives and
the Edward M. Ackerman Distinguished Professor of the American Jewish Experience &
Reform Jewish History, Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, Cincinnati, Ohio
DR. ZOLA WILL DELIVER A PRESIDENT’S DAY MESSAGE AND SPEAK ON
‘He Was Like One of Us’: Abraham Lincoln and American Jewry
6:00 p.m. - Service • 7:00 p.m. - Shabbat Dinner • 8:00 p.m. - Program
Dr.Zola
Although countless volumes have been published on the life of Abraham Lincoln, relatively few people are aware of the remarkable
history that links American Jewry and the sixteenth president. Dr. Gary P. Zola of Hebrew Union College, Cincinnati – the only
American Jewish historian to have served on the Academic Advisory Council of the congressionally recognized Abraham Lincoln
Bicentennial Commission in Washington, D.C. – recently completed a volume on Lincoln titled We Called Him Rabbi Abraham:
Lincoln and American Jewry. Dr. Zola will reconstruct Lincoln’s relationship with American Jewry during the course of his lifetime
and, also, he will explain why generations of American Jews believed him to be an “almost chosen person.” Zola’s analysis of
Lincoln’s historical image seeks to clarify why generations of American Jews have preferred to think of America’s “Father Abraham” as American Judaism’s “Rabbi Abraham.”
Dinner Cost - $16 per person Oneg Shabbat to follow.
Make your Shabbat dinner reservations online at www.ttti.org or call Tiondra Hope at 216-831-3233,

FROM THE RABBI’S STUDY
How to Combat Rigidity in Religion
page 3
As of this writing (January 10, 2015), the world is reeling under the impact of the tragic events that unfolded in
France during the past couple of days. Terrorists, speaking in the name of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula
(AQAP), have wreaked havoc in Paris, killing 17 people and shouting “We are Al Queda.” And this horrific
incident is just one of many perpetrated by radical Muslims in the past several years, though with gathering
frequency and intensity.
The French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said yesterday that France is at war with radical Islam. “It is,” he
declared, “a war against terrorism, against jihadism, against radical Islam, against everything that is aimed at breaking fraternity,
freedom, solidarity.” And since such harrowing atrocities are now perpetrated by individuals and can be carried out without warning
anywhere in the world, we know that such tragedies can happen here, too, as indeed they already have. But this “war on terrorism”
cannot be waged by Western governments and its security forces alone. Muslims of good will must join the protest and the battle.
Muslims of good will must decry these actions as perversions of their faith and of the venerable traditions which they represent.
For many years now Muslim leaders have been called upon to contribute their own strong voices against these atrocities allegedly done
in the name of their religion. And thankfully, those voices are now being raised. So, while the Islamic State (ISIS or ISIL) has praised
the attack, saying that “heroic jihadists” had attacked the office of a newspaper that made fun of Muhammad; and while Al Qaeda has
asserted that the attack sought revenge against “some filthy French people” who had insulted the prophet, another Muslim, Hassan
Farsadou, the president of the Union of Muslim Associates of Seine-Saint-Denis, said that the terrorist attacks were “a despicable,
criminal act, which we condemn utterly.” Yet, as Olivier Roy, an expert on political Islam and a professor at the European University
Institute has said, “what needs to happen is that the Muslim elites who are representative of the broader Muslim population in all its
diversity must speak out.”
Professor Roy’s point is an important one. Among the hallmarks of a humane religion are diversity, the acknowledgement of diversity,
and the need to allow, to encourage and even celebrate, dissenting opinions. No religion can allow being held captive to the views of
the few, especially the radical few. To avoid this, a tradition must cultivate a “culture of dissent,” a disposition to oppose and even reject
views that seem problematic. And those Muslims who thoroughly reject radical Islam as a gross distortion of their religion, must reject
this perversity in the very name of Islam itself.
The Jewish tradition, which, like any religion has had and still has its extremists, nevertheless has long embraced the idea that dissent,
adding the “no” to the “yes,” is a crucial component of a religion that seeks justice and peace, that seeks to rid itself of poisonous views
within. We find this kind of dissent, this insistence on the higher virtues, already in biblical religion. Prophets like Amos and Jeremiah
took on, loudly and forcefully, the rulers of the day and the accompanying “consensus of the realm” when they felt that true fidelity was
being undermined. The author of Ecclesiastes disputes the “authoritative” moral logic of the Deuteronomic historian when he feels
that it oversimplifies and even distorts a complex reality. Moses and Amos and Jeremiah even dare to challenge G-d when their understanding of G-d’s commands or decisions strikes them as problematic.
A culture of dispute, of skepticism, of an unwillingness to accept, or be silent in the face of, views and actions that are inherently
destructive and undermine the “ways of peace,” is one of the healthiest manifestations of a mature faith, a faith ready to insist on its
place in the comity of peoples and nations.
We can only hope that the voices of protest from within Islam, which are now being raised, will continue to gain strength and
persuasiveness in the crisis that we all now face.
L’Shalom, Rabbi Roger C. Klein

With Guest Professor Donald E. Pease, Dartmouth College
Sunday, February 22 at 7:30 p.m.
Donald E. Pease is a Professor of English, Chair of the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies Program
and The Ted and Helen Geisel Third Century Professor in the Humanities At Dartmouth College.
Professor Pease is an authority on 19th and 20th - century American literature and literary theory
and founder/director of the Futures of American Studies Institute. He has written numerous books,
including most recently Theodor Seuss Geisel (2010), and over 100 articles on figures in American
and British literature and an editor of The New Americanist series, which has transformed the field
of American studies.
On Sunday morning, Dr. Pease will talk to our religious school children about Dr. Seuss and the way in which Theodore
Geisel, the creator of Dr. Seuss, turned his own sad and happy childhood and adult experiences into the enchanting
and beloved books…The Cat in The Hat, Horton Hears a Who, The Lorax, Oh, The Places You’ll Go, If I Ran the Zoo, among
them… which have charmed and enlightened generations. In these fantastical books Dr. Seuss gently but powerfully
teaches lessons on kindness, trustworthiness, care, perseverance and tolerance.
On Sunday evening, Professor Pease will speak on “The Practical Wisdom of Dr. Seuss” and show how Theodore Geisel
artfully transformed the traumatic events he experienced and observed into the vital, ripe and joyous wisdom contained
in his ageless creations.

BABY’S NIGHT PRAYER is a gift to you and your new baby from the Temple Women’s
Association. A copy of the prayer may be seen at The Temple Women’s Association gift shop, Traditions. This beautiful prayer, written by Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver in 1923, has been used at The Temple
for many generations to welcome a child into The Temple family. The baby's name will also be
inscribed in our Temple Baby Prayer Book.
To have a prayer sent to a new baby or even one a little older, contact Debbie Emerman
at [email protected] or 440.349.9922 or Cyndi, in the rabbinic suite, at 216-455-1695.
