Philosophical Practice is based on the conviction that philosophizing does not aim merely at attaining
knowledge, but that it is an activity that allows for a deeper awareness of questions of human
existence and of everyday life. Philosophical dialogue thus can support us in our search for
orientation. The most important aim of Philosophical Practice is a better understanding of the other
and of oneself.
In recent years, a remarkable and varied international movement has developed. Since 1994,
International Conferences of Philosophical Practice have taken place in a great many different
countries all over the world. For the year 2016, the 14th ICPP is planned to take place in Switzerland
– organized by the Netzwerk für Praktisches Philosophieren philopraxis.ch. The network has existed
since 2002 and comprises approximately 30 members.
Place: Bern; at the Campus Muristalden, 5 minutes to walk from the old town centre; there are a
restaurant as well as a cafeteria on campus

subject of the conference: Understanding the other and oneself
The 14th ICPP 2016 is, as usual, mainly a conference by Philosophical Practitioners for Philosophical
Practitioners; but we also plan public events in cooperation with the Volkshochschule Bern and with
the Haus der Religionen. Most importantly, we aim at exchange and dialogue.

― there will be two events in each German, French and Italian (English translation being provided if
possible)
― the number of parallel events will be kept as low as possible
― as a novelty, poster-sessions will be held (the posters will be conspicuously placed all during the
entire conference; they will be introduced twice within a span of 30 minutes by the authors
concerned). These sessions will be filmed once.
― in addition, there will be praxis-oriented events (workshops), master-classes, panel-sessions, a
few lectures and mini-sessions (in groups of three each, treating similar topics; speaking-time will
be 3x10', 20' discussion for all of them; then there will be a mini break of 10' for room changes
etc.) as well as reflection groups.
― in order to leave enough space for dialogue and mutual exchange, breaks will be prolonged to
45'.
― selected events will be filmed and made accessible on the Internet (AGORA;
www.philopractice.org)
― three public events will take place in cooperation with the Volkshochschule Bern
― one event will take place in cooperation with the Haus der Religionen
― like in Athens and Belgrade, there will be free philosophical short-counselling, particularly in the
time when the conference is open to the public; they may be offered in German or in other
languages.
Topic: Understanding the other and oneself
If you wish to contribute to the conference, please send us the following information:
name, first name, e-mail-address, mobile-number, website-address of your own praxis, name of the
university where you studied philosophy, personal details and particulars on your own philosophy
practice (short, 400 characters at most); title of contribution; short summary (500 characters at
most); organizational details if necessary. Besides, it is important to state which of the above
mentioned forms (lecture, workshop, mini-session etc.) you chose for your contribution (more than
one form may be stated). The definitive classification will be up to the organizers.

2015. Should you wish to contribute an event in another language (German, French, Italian), please
send your particulars in that language as well as in English.
By mid-November, you will receive an invitation with a provisional programme. You may then apply
definitely for the conference. Because of the planning, early application is helpful; for this reason,
early applicants will be granted a discount until the end of January 2016. In April, you will receive
the detailed programme and by beginning of July 2016 the ready for print programme as a Pdf-file.
