The City of New Bern is seeking qualified applicants to fill two (2) Staff Engineer positions
within the Public Works and the Public Utilities Departments.
The candidate selected to fill the position within the Public Works Department will assist in the
planning, designing, permitting, and construction administration of City projects including but not
limited to stormwater, streets, sidewalks and other Public Works related improvements. This
position will also assist in reviewing construction plans and subdivision plans submitted for
departmental review to ensure compliance with City codes and ordinances. The selected candidate
will be responsible for overseeing the City of New Bern’s Stormwater Management Program,
including plan reviews, issuing permits and performing annual stormwater BMP inspections. In
addition, the selected candidate will oversee the day to day operations of the Stormwater
Maintenance Division and will be responsible for receiving and responding to public inquires;
identifying, developing, implementing plans to resolve drainage issues, and actively promoting
outreach and public education programs as identified in the Stormwater Management Manual. The
position will work under the direction of the Director of Public Works, with general supervision.
The candidate selected to fill the position within the Public Utilities Department will assist in the
planning, designing, permitting, and construction administration of City projects including but not
limited to water, sewer and other Public Utilities related improvements. This position will also assist
in reviewing construction plans and subdivision plans submitted for departmental review to ensure
compliance with City codes and ordinances. This position will work under the direction of the City
Engineer, with general supervision.
Requirements for these positions include any combination of education and experience equivalent to
graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil engineering,
stormwater management, construction management or other related field of study and some
engineering design experience. Additionally, applicant should have considerable experience in
AutoCad and Microsoft Office.
