UNIVERSITY OF WOLLONGONG IN DUBAI
The University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD) is one of the UAE’s oldest and most prestigious universities.
Established in 1993 by the University of Wollongong in Australia, UOWD represented a very early Australian initiative
in the Gulf region. From a small beginning at Al Mulla Plaza, through its landmark presence on Jumeirah Road to its
current location at Dubai Knowledge Village, UOWD is now recognized as being an integral part of Dubai.
As an independent UAE institution of higher education, UOWD attracts students not just from the UAE and Australia
but from all over the world. Approximately 3,500 students representing almost 100 nationalities are currently
enrolled at UOWD and enjoy a quality academic experience.
UOWD offers a variety of specialist Undergraduate and Postgraduate programs in its three faculties – Business
& Management, Finance & Accounting, and Computer Science & Engineering, which are directly linked to the
human resource needs of the UAE.
All UOWD degree programs are accredited by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and are
also audited by the Australian Universities Quality Agency. The internationally recognised qualifications enable UOWD
graduates to pursue rewarding careers in Dubai’s burgeoning employment market. UOWD Alumni include many high
profile graduates placed in prominent positions in both the public and private sectors across the region.
UOWD’s Centre for Language & Culture offers language courses in English and Arabic. They range from English
language study for University preparation to part time Arabic classes and English language teacher training.
The Arabic program focuses on the linguistic as well as the cultural experience, enabling participants to explore and
enjoy Dubai’s diversity.
The University’s faculty is a mix of locally and internationally recruited academics with extensive teaching, business
and industry experience. They bring years of knowledge gained from research in their respective fields into
the classroom providing students with a stimulating academic environment. Classes are small in number, allowing
the lecturers to cater to the students’ individual needs.
Since its inception, the University of Wollongong in Dubai has built a reputation for quality, credibility and integrity,
and is held in high esteem by its students, alumni, business, industry and government. It maintains a long and proud
tradition of excellence in education combined with liberal values of enquiry. It continuously strives to provide a fertile
environment for bright young minds to flourish, where critical thinking is both encouraged and nurtured. These are
the qualities that characterise great institutes of learning.

ACCUPLACER is an online English test that applicants for the CLC need to take at the time of application.
ACCUPLACER demonstrates an applicant’s level of English, based on the test results. A recommendation is
provided indicating the program of study in which an applicant is eligible to enrol. Alternatively an applicant may
be advised to take the IELTS test.
ACCUPLACER is used for English placement in several universities in the UAE and internationally. The test
format is easy to follow and takes 2 hours. Candidates may sit for the test at the time of application and results
are available within 1-2 days. Test room supervisors are available to help candidates at the time of test if
necessary.
To help prospective students prepare for the test, a fact sheet about ACCUPLACER is provided by the CLC office
at the time of application. A link to a sample practice test for candidate to access is http://www.uowdubai.ac.ae/

In its efforts to encourage professionalism in the field of teaching English as an additional language, the CLC
offers this certificate leading to graduate level courses of study for people interested in teaching in this area, or
upgrading their current English language teaching qualification.

IELTS Test Preparation classes
IELTS preparation classes are designed for people who have a good understanding of the English language, and
who are almost at the band score they need. The IELTS preparation classes are part of the progression through
CLC English language programs towards university entrance. IELTS-type tasks are taught and tested at all levels
of CLC English language programs.
The IELTS part-time classes focus on bringing students who are at an upper-intermediate or advanced level up
to the level they require to be successful on the IELTS exam. There are two levels in the IELTS part-time preparation program; the first (IELTS PT 1) focusing on the language and vocabulary needed on the IELTS exam. The
second level (IELTS PT 2) focuses on the analysis of tasks and skills needed to succeed on the exam. Furthermore, the second level is available in two separate modes, general training (IELTS PT2 GT) and academic
training (IELTS PT2 AC).
In addition to the part-time mode of delivery for IELTS preparation, an intensive course is offered to assist those
who may not have much time but would still like and need effective preparation. IELTS intensive courses run
during the term breaks. Please refer to the CLC Course Dates table for specific timings.

LIVING IN DUBAI
Welcome to Dubai, “the desert’s most exciting city”. Situated on
the north-eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula, Dubai is the
second largest of the seven emirates which comprises the United
Arab Emirates (UAE), a country where the dust of the desert is
clearing to reveal one of the most vibrant and dynamic international cities of the 21st century.
Wedged between Europe and Asia and buttressed by Africa,
Dubai is building energetically on the advantages of its location,
centuries-old trading savvy and oil wealth. Dubai embraces a
wide variety of scenery in a very small area. In a single day,
visitors may experience everything from rugged mountains and
awe-inspiring sand dunes to sandy beaches and lush green
parks, from dusty villages to luxurious residential districts with
manicured golf courses and from ancient houses with wind
towers to ultra-modern shopping malls.
Dubai is both a lively international business and IT hub and a
laid-back tourist escape; a city where the sophistication of the
21st century walks hand in hand with the simplicity of a bygone
era. These contrasts give Dubai its unique flavour and personality; a cosmopolitan society with an international lifestyle, yet with
a culture deeply rooted in the Islamic traditions of Arabia.
At first glance, the city presents a predominantly modern face, an
ever-changing skyline of new developments, from striking glass
and concrete towers to gracious modern buildings incorporating
traditional Arabian architectural motifs and features. Traditional
Arab hospitality and a delightful winter climate complemented by
a crime-free environment have contributed in recent years to
create an ideal atmosphere for the development of Dubai as a
destination for leisure and recreation.
Climate
Dubai has a sub tropical and arid climate; sunny blue
skies and high temperatures may be expected most of
the year and rainfall is infrequent and irregular, usually
falling on an average of 25 days per year, mainly in the
winter.
Temperatures range from a low of around 10 degrees
Celsius in winter to a high of 48 degrees Celsius in the
summer. The mean daily maximum is 24 degrees
Celsius in January, rising to 41 degrees Celsius in
August.
Culture and Customs
Dubai’s culture is firmly rooted in the Islamic traditions of
Arabia. In some parts of the world, Islamic fundamentalism has given the ‘outside’ world a very extreme and
different view of the religion. In contrast to this image,
however, Dubai is very tolerant and welcoming; visitors
are free to practice their own religion, alcohol is served
in hotels and in restaurants and the dress code is liberal.
Women face little discrimination. Among the most highly
prized virtues are courtesy and hospitality and visitors
are charmed by the genuine warmth and friendliness of
the people. The official language of the UAE is Arabic,
although English, Hindi and Urdu are spoken widely,
particularly in the business sector.

cafes.
Cost
Please visit www.uowdubai.ac.ae for details on the cost of living in the UOWD Residences.
Private Accommodation
Students who prefer an independent lifestyle should consider private living arrangements, especially if one:
Qhas a car or can make other transportation arrangements;
Qprefers not to share an apartment with other students;
Qcan manage the landlord-tenant relationship, budgeting, cooking, and cleaning.
UOWD has contacts with several real estate companies which provide private furnished/unfurnished accommodation available on a short-term basis suitable for students. All private rental arrangements are handled
between the student and the rental agent. UOWD is not responsible for any aspect of private accommodation.
Students who wish to live in private accommodation should travel to Dubai prior to the start of the semester to
make the necessary arrangements. Please note that private accommodation is considerably more expensive
than the Student Residences and is not always readily available.
Accommodation in Dubai
There is a range of accommodation options for students who do not wish to stay in University accommodation.
Rents in Dubai, however, are high and prices continue to rise each year.
The average annual cost of an apartment is as follows:
Modest, 1 bedroom
Modest, 2 bedrooms

Good quality, 2 bedrooms
Good quality, 3 bedrooms
AED 50,000

This amount usually does not include furnishings, utilities, internet, or satellite TV service. It also does not include
transportation to/from the campus or damage deposits. UAE landlords normally require that tenants pay the
annual rental in advance before moving in, although in some cases they will accept payment in 2 or 3 instalments
(by way of post-dated cheques).
The classified sections of the newspapers in Dubai provide a comprehensive listing of all types of accommodation
from shared flats to furnished apartments and private villas. Rental prices are quoted in annual terms. Utilities are not
always included in the rent and may add an additional AED 1,000 – 1,200 per month to the cost of accommodation.
Shared accommodation is a solution to the high cost of renting private accommodation. Rental for shared accommodation may range from AED 3,500 – 5,000 per month, depending upon the location and number of people
sharing the accommodation.
Family Accommodation
Due to the restrictions related to international student visa sponsorship, it may be very difficult for a non-GCC
national student to bring their family to Dubai. However, should family members be permitted to accompany the
student, or join the student at a later date, the approximate annual cost for family accommodation is:
Reasonable, small
Good quality, medium sized
Luxury, large
AED 120,000 - 130,000
AED 140,000 - 160,000
AED 180,000 - 200,000
Cost of Living
Dubai is an expensive city and the cost of living is relatively high. Living costs will vary depending upon different
factors – rent, food, entertainment, transportation and other miscellaneous expenses.
Shopping is plentiful and good bargains are available. Haggling is acceptable in the markets and ‘souks’; department stores and shopping malls operate on a fixed price system.
There are several large chains of supermarkets in Dubai offering a wide variety of produce and products. International produce and products are also available in the larger supermarkets, but the price is substantially higher
than for the local equivalent.
Guide to Average Monthly Living Expenses
The following comparison between staying in University accommodation and private accommodation (a modest
one bedroom flat) may provide a useful assessment of the approximate monthly costs students would need to
consider when making a decision regarding where to live in Dubai.
