From the autobiography How It All Started by Debbie Fox, with Jean Libman Block I was born on December 31, 1955, in Curry Clinic in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the forth and last child of Sarah and Edward Fox. My parents were both from farm families that had settled in southern Tennessee many generations ago. Daddy was the oldest of ten children (eight boys and two girls), and mama was the fifth of eight children (five boys and three girls). They first met when they were working on a farm at harvest time. My sister Joyce was sixteen, and my brother Bobby fourteen, and my brother Ralph twelve when I was born. All were healthy, normal, and good-looking. My mother, who was thirty-seven then, had a terrible pregnancy with me far different from her other pregnancies, which were very easy. With me she was sick and miserable almost the entire time. Dr. James McKinny, our family doctor, made her stay in bed a great deal, and Joyce took over the housework and cooking. Joyce was a good cook, but she had a hard time keeping the boys filled up, because Mama was so queasy she couldn’t stand the smell of cooking. Everybody was eager for the baby to be born and for the family to get back to normal. I don’t think mama realized she had anything serious to worry about until a little while after I was born. (I weighed in at six pounds and three ounces.) Then, suddenly, the doctors and nurses were too busy to show her the new baby. “When do I see my baby?” she asked Dr. McKinny. “The nurses are very busy,” he told her, “they’ll bring her to you as soon as they can.” A little later she repeated the question to a nurse: “You know, I haven’t seen my baby. When are you bringing her?” The nurse hesitated, then said, “I guess they’re cleaning her up now.” Meantime, the doctor broke the bad news to Daddy, “I’m sorry, Mr. Fox,” he said, “but something’s gone wrong. It must have happened during your wife’s pregnancy. Your baby is not normal.” The doctor said he couldn’t give a name to what was wrong with me - it wasn’t any well-known, recognizable condition or disease. Something must have happened to damage me while I was developing as a fetus. Daddy saw me when I was a few hours old, and even to this day my heart goes out to him for the shock and pity he must have felt. I’ve never seen my own pictures at birth, and I don’t think I ever want to see them. But I’ve heard and read the descriptions of what I looked like. Poor Daddy! What he saw was a baby girl without a right hand and pretty much without a face. My eyes were off to the side. At birth the left eyelid didn’t open at all. There was no nose - only a hole where the nose should have been. I had no upper lip If you are wondering what you can do to help FACES the other 364 days of the year, then just ask a FACES volunteer. They will tell you about our Adopt-A-Face Program, and how you or your group can help a FACES client and his or her parent to travel for craniofacial surgery. When you join the FACES AdoptA-Face Program, FACES helps you choose a child to “adopt.” You make a yearly donation that is used exclusively to help that child travel away from home for his or her surgeries. You receive pictures of before and after treatments and you are informed of all trips and the progress being made by the child through your gifts. With your gift to FACES, doubt is replaced with knowledge, loneliness is replaced with connections, and FACES Client Evan, Apert Syndrome helplessness is replaced with hope. These are gifts that can never be repaid; but you can be assured, they change the lives of those who receive them. Thank you for participating in Ride 4 Smiles! FACES: The National Craniofacial Association 423.266.1632 or 800.332.2373 www.faces-cranio.org - just flaps of loose tissue that resulted from a double cleft. Inside my head there was a double cleft palate, with the cleft extending deep into the bony structure of my skull. Someone once said that I looked as if a firecracker had gone off in the middle of my face - and that’s about the best way to describe me. The hospital records reported that I had fifty-nine abnormalities of the face, skull, palate, and limbs, including my missing right hand and bands of tight fibrous tissue around my left leg and right thigh. Years later, a woman remarked about me, “I’ll never understand why the doctor let that child live.” A nurse who was in the delivery room when I was born happened to overhear her. “How dare you say such a thing!” the nurse rebuked that woman. “who knows what that child will do in her lifetime?” I am grateful for what the nurse said, because I have never been sorry that I lived. I am happy, really happy, that I lived! Even though I have had to struggle and suffer to obtain what almost everyone else takes for granted - a face - I now believe my survival was an important part of God’s plan for helping other afflicted children. I truly believe that. FACES was started in Chattanooga in 1969 to assist Debbie and children like Debbie who are born with craniofacial disorders. THE CARDS ARE WRAPPED IN AN ENVELOPE THAT IS ONLY TO BE OPENED BY THE ASSIGNED FACES VOLUNTEER AT SUGAR'S RIBS AFTER YOU HAVE DRAWN YOUR 5TH CARD. If it appears that the envelope has been opened or tampered with in any way, YOU WILL BE DISQUALIFIED. Once you have drawn all 5 cards, THEY WILL BE OPENED BY THE FACES VOLUNTEER and your hand will be scored by a volunteer on a score sheet. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO KEEP UP WITH YOUR SCORE SHEET. HANDS WILL BE JUDGED AT APPROXIMATELY 5:00 AND YOU MUST BE PRESENT TO WIN. High hand will be ranked in the following order: 1. Royal Flush 2. Straight Flush 3. Four of a Kind 4. Full House 6. Straight 7. Three of a Kind 8. Two Pair 9. Pair 5. Flush 10. High Card Each level of value beats all levels below it. For instance, even the lowest Three of a Kind (Twos) will beat the highest Two Pair (Aces and Kings). If two players have the same type of hand, the player with the higher value cards wins the hand. For instance, the player with three Jacks beats the player with three Eights. Extra cards only matter if two players have otherwise identical hands. For instance, if two players each have Two Pair consisting of Tens and Fours, the player with the higher value extra card wins the hand. In the ca se of an exact tie, the player whose name is on the judges list of last year’s Ride 4 Smiles participants will win. Otherwise, the prize money will be split between the winners. By Madeline Apple, Charter Signatory & Advisory Board Member It was a beautiful September morning many years ago when one of the most remarkable children that I have ever had the privilege to know opened the door for me to step into her life. Her name was At the time I met Debbie, I was employed by the My assignment was to be an instructor for homebound physically handicapped children. I met Debbie in her home when she was six years old. She was eager to start school with her friends, but that was not to be. She had a long and difficult road ahead of her before she would be able to accomplish that goal. You see, Debbie was born with an almost unbelievable variety of birth defects. By actual count, some fifty-nine abnormalities were diagnosed. The most serious, and the most obvious, involved her face and her hands. She needed extensive craniofacial reconstruction as well as surgery on one hand. Some sympathetic and generous citizens of the Chattanooga area learned of her plight and established a foundation to provide funds for her to obtain the best medical , chartered in 1969 by the State care available. This was the of Tennessee as a not-for-profit corporation. I was proud to be one of the incorporators, who was then the Assistant along with Debbie's mother and father, and Superintendent of Hamilton County Schools. of Chattanooga who had performed Debbie's first surgeon was a series of corrections in her first few weeks of life. Following his untimely death in an automobile accident, an Atlanta surgeon by the name of worked with Debbie until he, too, was taken from us with a heart attack. Then, it was her good fortune to become a patient of at in Baltimore, who has remained her doctor to the present time. I grew increasingly close to Debbie and her family. As radical cranial reconstruction was a very new and experimental field of medicine at that time (Debbie was only the second patient in the United States to undergo such corrections), no one could really appreciate the anxiety and pain this child was to experience. I traveled with them throughout the long series of surgeries as Debbie's friend and teacher and as an integral part of her support system. In spite of the hardships she had to endure, she never lost sight of that six-year-old's goal of going to school with her friends. Indeed, she graduated from high school with her class. After more than 100 surgeries, she has completed her medical ordeal. Two years ago I had the joy of seeing Debbie attain another goal: she was married and now maintains her own home. She successfully carries out the responsibilities that the adventure of marriage entails. She is a happy young woman and a contributing member of society. As word of the good work of the Debbie Fox Foundation spread across the country, more and more families called in for assistance, and the organization took on a national prominence. In 1985, the name was changed to generally known by its nick-name, Since 1969, hundreds of facially disfigured children and adults have been served, thanks to the inspiration of a brave little girl from Soddy-Daisy, Tennessee, by the name of Debbie Fox. FACES Ride 4 Smiles MC Keith Edwards After 25 years in the Chattanooga radio market, working for stations including Fox 102 and 96.5 The Mountain, I moved back to the Atlanta area in 2004 and have been working as a marketing consultant and air talent for a 5 station radio group that includes Great Classics 98.9 and Kiss 102.7. My true passion is motorcycle riding and yearround, on any nice weekend, I will log hundreds of miles with at least one 10-day, cross country trip each year. Chattanooga is a place that I still think of as home and I'm looking forward to helping with the FACES Ride 4 Smiles event. FACES Miles for Smiles I have several passions in my life; family, riding my motorcycle, inspiring others and making people smile are just a few. FACES: The National Craniofacial Association is also top on my list. FACES captured my heart over seven years ago, when I designed their brochure. As is my habit when I design, I did research on craniofacial differences so that I would have a better idea about the children and adults that FACES helps. I cried the whole time. A person with craniofacial differences not only endures many, many surgeries, but due to ignorance, is often subjected to stares, public ridicule, and meanness. I soon became a volunteer for FACES and then later was invited on the Board where I served until recently when I actually was hired by FACES to be their Communications & Program Director. Needless to say, I LOVE MY JOB! That being said, it was only natural for me to want to ride my bike to the FACES Rally [see ad below!], in Upland, Nebraska, which benefits FACES and use it to raise awareness of children and adults with craniofacial differences, FACES: The National Craniofacial Association, and to promote the FACES Rally in NE. On Wednesday, June 5, 2012, I will be hopping on my Honda VTX1800 and riding over 1000 miles in two days to Upland, Nebraska for the 11th Annual FACES Rally. You can keep track of my progress at http://facesmilesforsmiles.blogspot.com. Dear Friends of FACES, It is a privilege for me to write and share with you the gratitude in my heart for the donations you make to FACES. I learned that I was pregnant with Cammi just before moving with my husband and three children back to our home state of Nevada from Texas. I found a job and rented a house big enough for all of us. It was then that my life started falling apart. I was 21 weeks pregnant when I had the ultrasound that showed my little girl had a cleft lip and possibly a cleft palate. My husband insisted that I terminate the pregnancy, and when I refused, he left us. I knew then that I was going to take care of my baby on my own no matter how hard it was going to be. My mother moved in with us to help. I was working long hours to support my children. I tried to learn everything I could about clefts and I found a very experienced craniofacial medical team in California. I knew this would be the best place to take my baby, but I also knew I would not have the money to pay for the airfare and other expenses. Desperate for help, I searched the web and I found the blessing I needed to get my baby to the best doctors - FACES! Cammi Grace was born on March 29th. She was born with a cleft lip and palate and she only had one nostril. Cammi has had seven surgeries and more are to come. FACES has made it possible for us to get the surgeries that Cammi has needed. I would not be able to do this without the help of FACES and those of you who contribute. My heartfelt thank you does not even begin to express my gratitude to you for helping my Cammi to be so beautiful and live a normal life. Sincerely, Danielle, Cammi's mommy FACES Ride 4 Smiles Ride Route Last Bike In at 4:30pm Thank You For Riding in FACES Ride 4 Smiles!
