ABOUT OUR
WINE STYLES
Last winter, we introduced a new system of classifying wines
designed to make shopping simpler. Every shelf sign in the
VINTAGES section of our stores now lists a style profile, some
of which are featured in this story. There are four styles for
red wines and four for whites (sparkling wines, rosés, fortified
wines and dessert wines have their own styles too). This style
system will help you easily identify wines that are similar
to others you’ve tried and loved. It’s a great tool for exploring
different regions, or for quick shopping trips when you don't
have time to read every tasting note.

YOUNG AT HEART
Insolia (Inzolia) is one of the
most significant white grapes
of Sicily, where evidence
suggests that it has been
cultivated since at least the
16th century. DOC Erice is
located on the upper slopes
of Mount Erice, and was
designated as a DOC in
2004, making it one of the
youngest DOCs on Sicily.
FAZIO LEVÀNTIO INSOLIA 2011
DOC Erice, Sicily
TASTING NOTE: Notes of peach, apple, citrus
and white flowers are joined by tropical mango
aromas. The palate is fresh and crisp and offers
citrus and guava with a marked minerality.
Balanced with a crisp, satisfying finish. (VINTAGES

CAMPED ON
SOLID GROUND
BEAT THE HEAT
Greco di Tufo is the grape
of choice for the vast
majority of DOC quality
wines in Campania.
The soil here is predominantly tufo, a kind of rock
created from volcanic
ash; it imparts impressive
minerality to the wines.
Grillo is a native
Sicilian variety noted
for its ability to bear
up against intense
heat. It creates wines
that offer delicate
herbaceous and floral
tones.
FREE YOUR SENSES
Friulano is the modern name
for Sauvignonasse; though
similar in name to Sauvignon
Blanc, it’s quite different
stylistically. The grape flourishes in Colli Orientali del
Friuli, where it produces
superbly aromatic and floral
wines.

TERREDORA LOGGIA DELLA SERRA
GRECO DI TUFO 2011
BASTIANICH ADRIATICO
FRIULANO 2011
DI GIOVANNA GRILLO 2011
DOCG, Campania
DOC Coli Orientali del Friuli, Friuli
TASTING NOTE: The 2011 Greco di Tufo
Loggia della Serra impresses for its energy
and pure focus. Smoke, slate, crushed
rocks and pears are all layered together in
a gorgeous, medium-bodied white. All the
elements meld together beautifully in this
striking, delineated white. There is an
understated intensity on the finish that is
hugely appealing. The Loggia della Sera
is the most complete and harmonious of
Terredora’s 2011 whites. Anticipated
maturity: 2013-2015. Score: 90 (Antonio
Galloni, erobertparker.com, Feb. 2013)
TASTING NOTE: A notably fragrant and
generous nose offering tantalizing notes of
lemon, orange pekoe tea, pear, pineapple,
white flowers and spice. The palate is lovely,
round and flavourful with touches of mint
and fresh herbs intermingled with the
aroma replays. (VINTAGES panel, Feb. 2013)

TASTING NOTE: Amazing floral notes
evoking white and yellow flowers, nectarine,
apricot, and grapefruit zest. The palate
is sunny, bright and balanced. Lots of zing
provided by a citrus-rind note that creates
a very dry finish. This will work as a sipper,
but will impress with seafood or light olio

UNYIELDING
EXCELLENCE
ON A FIRSTNAME BASIS
When yields are
restricted and the
grapes are allowed
to completely ripen,
Teroldego produces
exquisite wines with
rich black cherry notes
and ripe tannins.
The grape has a great
affinity for oak, and
the wines are excellent
candidates for your
cellar.
TY
Monica di Sardegna
is one of Sardinia’s
oldest red grapes. It
is also one of the
few grape names
permitted to appear
as part of the DOC.
Just remember the
Monica moniker and
you will never go
wrong in the store.
RUGGED AND
LASTING
The mountainous
Abruzzo region benefits
from the moderating
influence of the Adriatic
as well as the sun
exposure provided by
the vineyards’ sloping
aspect. Montepulciano
d’Abruzzo is often
consumed young but
can be aged for upwards of 10+ years.
ABRA CALABRIA
Historically Cirò produced
quite robust and full-bodied
wines, but increased use
of oak ageing (which this
wine underwent), is creating
increasingly nuanced and
approachable expressions.
The magic of winemaking.

MONTEPULCIANO

MEZZACORONA
TEROLDEGO ROTALIANO
RISERVA 2009
DOC, Abruzzo
DOC, Alto Adige/Trentino
TASTING NOTE: Tre Saggi,
or three wise men, is a terrific
wine at a realistic price. This
luscious vintage shows bright
fruit nuances of black cherry
and currant backed by soft,
oak-inspired aromas of spice,
leather and tobacco. Special
Designation: Editor’s Choice
Score: 90 (Monica Larner,
Wine Enthusiast, June 2012)
TASTING NOTE: … Blackcurrant and black cherry fruit
leads, with a hint of prune
and clove oak spice … Dry and
verging on full bodied in the
mouth, this manages to balance
austere tannins, snappy acidity
and relatively savoury dark fruit
flavours really rather well indeed. Imbued with an impressively well resolved and soft
mouthfeel… perhaps not a ripe
and crowd pleasing style, but
it is a wonderful expression of a
traditionally vinified Teroldego ...

TASTING NOTE: Complex
aromas of cherry, strawberry,

on the nose. The palate is very
fruit forward and front-loaded
with red fruit flavours. There is
a lovely ripe fruit sweetness
to the core that also informs the
long finish. Excellent balance
and structure throughout. Enjoy
this with minestrone soup,
or with grilled chicken or pork.

TASTING NOTE: Quite involved
aromas of leather, tobacco,
spice, anise and roses join the
excellent fruit notes to create
a complex and elegant nose.
The palate offers superb flavour
replays and red fruits supported
by underlying integrated acidity
and tannin. Tasty and very good.
An ideal partner for a variety
of barbecued meats, or for a
good ol’ spaghetti and meatball dinner. (VINTAGES panel,

AND SOLOIST
Quality minded producers have been
drawn to Nero d'Avola
by the body, colour
and ageing potential it
brings to a blend, as
well as for the powerful and impressive
wines it can produce
as a single varietal.
THE BAROLO
OF THE SOUTH
The dark-skinned
Aglianico grape
creates full-bodied,
highly tannic and
ageable wines in
Campania. In Puglia,
the grape produces
high-quality wines in
a style that is accessible much younger.
OTH
RECALIBRATING YOUR
EXPECTATIONS
IN A CLASS OF THEIR OWN
Negroamaro is grown virtually exclusively
in Puglia. When blended with Malvasia
Nera, which adds both colour and
aromatic characteristics, it produces
some of the most impressive wines
in the region.
Calabria’s proximity to Sicily is likely a
large reason why Calabrise, aka Nero
d’Avola, plays such a significant role. As in
Sicily, the grape is celebrated for both its
excellence as a component in blends and
for creating single-varietal wines.

TASTING NOTE: This is primarily Negroamaro with a small
portion of Malvasia Nera.
Nice intensity on the nose with
an interesting floral lift and
suggestions of rich red cherry,
black fruit, warm earthy leather,
hickory and a hint of gingery
spice. The palate is smooth and
approachable with considerable
lush fruit and more leathery
tones. Good balance and complexity throughout. A fig note
emerges on the dry and lifted
finish. (VINTAGES panel,
July 2013)
TASTING NOTE: Suggestions of
smoke, prune, leather, cherry,
red fruit and lifted violet on the
nose. The palate is ripe and
round with superb fruit flavour
with touches of spice and
smooth tannins combining to
create a sensual and deeply
satisfying experience. This is an
excellent value that will shine
with grilled red meat. (VINTAGES

This wine was awarded BBM in
the 2013 Gambero Rosso.
TASTING NOTE: Complex and
layered aromas of plum, earth,
tar, black cherry, vanilla and
smoke. The palate offers notes
of earth, ripe black fruits, spice
and soft vanilla. The tannins

NOW AND ZIN
Primitivo is identical to
California's big, bold
Zinfandel. Derived from
the Latin, primitivus,
or first to ripen, the
name was coined in
the 18th century by
a monk who observed
that this vine’s fruit
ripened earlier than
others in his care.

Aglianico in Campania.
Dark, concentrated and
ageable, Aglianico from
Taurasi has the potential

Tuscany.
A BRIGHT FUTURE
WHEN IN ROME
Sagrantino di Montefalco must be
aged for 12 months in oak and a
further 18 months in bottle before
release. This is the signature wine
of Umbria, and many see it as
poised to take its place among the
likes of Chianti and Brunello.
Cesanese is notoriously difficult to grow and to vinify, and
great care must be taken to
create exceptional wines; this
may be why it’s rarely seen
outside of Lazio. These fruity,
layered and complex wines
are true treasures.

Chuck another prawn on the barbie.
When most people think of Australian barbecue wines, they think robust
reds to match sizzling steaks. The flip-side of that story is that the island
continent Down Under makes a range of crisp, flavourful, food-friendly
whites that are equally good for grilling – especially with seafood. Come
and say g’day to the fresh face of Australian white wines!

The phrase “Throw another shrimp
on the barbie” is in fact the result of
an intercontinental case of the broken
telephone game. When Crocodile
Dundee star Paul Hogan first uttered
the catchphrase for Australia’s
“Come and say g’day!”
tourism campaign in
1984, he actually said
“I’ll slip an extra shrimp
on the barbie for ya.”
What’s more, Australians
refer to shrimp as
“prawns” – the former was
chosen specifically for the
North American ear. And to top it all
off, you’re not likely to hear an Aussie
say they’re going to “slip” anything
on the barbie – the common slang for
throw is “chuck.” But no worries,
mate! No matter how you say it, grilled
shrimp is a perfect pairing with
Aussie white wine.

YALUMBA THE Y SERIES
VIOGNIER 2012
South Australia
TASTING NOTE: When Yalumba
first started making big noises
about viognier – over a decade
ago – the wines they often produced were big, spicy, hedonistic,
alcoholic numbers. This wine
is reminiscent of those releases –
with refinement. Indeed I’d
argue this wine suggests how far
Yalumba – and Australia – has
come with viognier. It’s just a good
wine, no trumpets – but with a
few signature flourishes. Ginger,
stonefruits, fleshy white nuts,
warm stewed apples. It’s big-ish
but not burningly so. It’s not just
another white white, it’s viognier
and proudly so. A wine like this
has a real place in the Australian
white wine drinking landscape.
I probably should rate it higher.

DISTILLED
TREASURES
PowerTrip
You’ll be transported by this intense Armagnac, perfected
over four generations by a family of French distillers.
18 VINTAGES
THE INSIDE STORY
GOOD TASTE
In the right hand of France is the glistening
amber cup of the Armagnac region. Cognac
gets more attention but Armagnac brandy has
more intensity, in part because of its singledistillation process (Cognac is double-distilled),
which leaves more robust flavours intact.
Armagnac production is an art that relies on ageing
and continuity. When the eau-de-vie goes into
the barrel, you want to know that someone you
trust is going to be around to bottle it in 25 years.
Great-grandfather Delord started out as a travelling
distiller – with his two trusted cows pulling his
still from farm to farm – eventually earning enough
to buy his own vineyard to grow the grapes for
Armagnac. He entrusted his craft and methodical
distillation process to his sons, who in turn
instructed their sons, who are now leading the
younger generation to acclaim. This 25-year-old
Armagnac received the “Extraordinary, Ultimate
Recommendation” score of 97 and the Chairman’s
Trophy, representing the best of the best, at
the Ultimate Spirits Challenge in 2011. It is listed
among the Spirit Journal’s Top 120 Spirits for
2013 (#33!).
Even the most dedicated Cognac lover will
be impressed by this Armagnac’s raw
power. Characterful with caramel, campfire
smoke and dried fruit notions followed
by a lingering finish.
SERVE IT UP
Though it’s traditionally served in a
brandy snifter, sipping it from a narrow
glass with a tapered chimney is the
modern way. It pairs well with decadent
fare such as foie gras, duck confit,
Roquefort cheese and a myriad of other
delights. Deeply satisfying as a digestif.

Love is a
Battlefield
The vineyard that this wine calls
home was a battlefield during
the War of 1812. Today, visitors
taking a winery tour can view
historic artifacts found on the same
soil where grapevines now flourish.
Winemaker Jeff Innes calls this
Sauvignon Blanc a “romantic blend
of Old and New World.” Beautifully
crafted and filled with sun-kissed
fruit flavours, it’s a perfect sip with
which to enjoy the serenity of a
summer’s day and reflect on this
land we love.

Aromas of sweet-and-sour cherry, potpourri and
dried fruits – almost reminiscent of a Tawny

citrus and tree fruit play about the edges. Fresh,

DANIEL LENKO OLD VINES
CHARDONNAY 2010
VQA Niagara Peninsula, American Oak
TASTING NOTE: With Pierre Sparr, a most
reliable producer from Alsace, France, you don’t
have to spend buckets to get a good quality
sparkler. This medium bodied coppery pink
bubbly made in the traditional (champagne)
method from 100 per cent pinot noir grapes has
lovely fresh wild berry tastes of strawberry and
raspberry with a touch of sweetness. Harmonious
and smooth it’s a perfect opener to a great
evening. (Margaret Swaine, The National Post,
Feb. 13, 2010)
TASTING NOTE: Made from vines planted in
1959, which Lenko says is the oldest planting
of Chardonnay in Canada. The wine is barrel
fermented and barrel aged in U.S. oak for
12 months, 80% new oak. A full-blown nose of
Bosc pear, butterscotch, coconut, ripe citrus,
toasted vanilla and a full pantry of baking spices.
It is wonderfully complex and rich on the palate
with gushing fruit, sweet oak spices and creamy
butterscotch all balanced out by a healthy vein
of acidity. Delicious and opulent. Score: 91 (Rick

TASTING NOTE: This is the Pinot Noir to drink

wine has a fine dark hue. It begins with attractive
aromas of cherry, raspberry and mocha, leading

ST. FRANCIS CHARDONNAY 2010

CALIFORNIA
TASTING NOTE: Aromas reminiscent of oak forest,
buttered toast, baked apple and grilled mango
create a winning combination on the nose. In the
mouth this is big and toasty but the oak is not
overpowering; it is well integrated and handled.
Lifted fruit notes – apple and melon in particular –
shine on the finish. Toasty smoke carries through

CHARDONNAY 2011
Arroyo Seco, Monterey County
TASTING NOTE: This very impressive chardonnay
blasts intense, very spicy, floral, orange-tangerine,
lavender-licorice aromas. It is from a clone of
chardonnay known as Dijon 809, but much better
known here in Canada as chardonnay musque,
where the name is used on several Niagara
chards. It is very smooth, rich, fairly sweet and
citric – powerful not like others. Excellent length.

TRUCHARD CHARDONNAY 2011

TASTING NOTE: This is a stylish, nicely pulled
back style that seems to clearly benefit from the
particularly gravelly soil and relatively cool, windy
climate of the Arroyo Seco AVA. Fruit is fresh and
sharp especially for a 2010, while acids are crisp
(only partial malolactic) and the palate is distinctly
dry; wood is a minor influence. All in all, this is a
food friendly, lively wine with lots of appeal and
good to very good length. Score: 88 (John Szabo,

ELK COVE PINOT NOIR 2011

HAVENS
CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2010
Howell Mountain, Napa Valley
(Stonehedge Winery)
TASTING NOTE: Elk Cove is one of the most
venerable producers in Oregon – a relatively
young wine region in a global context. They’ve
been making wine for over 35 years, and have
proven their mettle as Pinot specialists. This
impressive specimen shows plenty of rich
peppery blackberry and raspberry character,
with impeccable balance. A fine choice for
prime rib. (VINTAGES panel, Jan. 2013)
TASTING NOTE: Big, concentrated and powerful
Cabernet teeming with intense campfire smoke,
new leather, licorice, blackcurrant and blackberry.
The sinewy tannins and brambly notions add a
feral aspect on the palate, and a smoked meat
character adds further intrigue. This could easily

TASTING NOTE: Big, forceful, tightly wound
Sonoma Mountain Cab showing dark cherry,
blackberry, currant, wild blueberry, grilled herbs
and cedar with subtle whiffs of shoe polish and
mocha spice. Elegant despite its power, with
bright acidity and fine-grained tannins. The fruit
is lifted towards redcurrant and red plum on the
mid-palate. This will really come into its own with
1-2 more years under its belt, and could easily
last 7-8+. Pair with herb-crusted lamb grilled
rare. (VINTAGES panel, June 2013)

TASTING NOTE: Beginning to offer hints of
mature complexity. Dried cherry, smoked meat,
leather, vanilla and raspberry jelly aromas with a
dry forest floor in the background. Smooth and

cherry added to the flavour replays. The balance,
structure and fine tannins suggest a lifespan that

TASTING NOTE: De Martino is one of the leading
and most innovative smaller family producers in
Chile, if over 500 acres of organically tended
vineyards in central Maipo makes them “smaller.”
This pours very dark ruby-black. It has a ripe
cassis, herbs and chocolate nose with some
meaty character. It’s full bodied, fairly dense and
well balanced, with some green caper, herbs and
chocolate. Quite thick and dense, with excellent

Damien Dupuy moved onto the family farm in 2010,
a nice 66 ha property and birthplace of reliable
value wines. This wine was elected a jury favourite
for the vintages 2008 and 2003, and the 2010 is
in the same vein. This blend dominated by Merlot
received a controlled oak stay (twelve months in
vats and six months in barrel) that highlights its
power, richness and complexity. Lightly wooded,
measured and delicate, with vanilla, chocolate and
toast, allowed to express on the nose and palate a
sweet fruit reminiscent of ripe cassis and sweet
jam. Robust, the palate is based on a frame of fine,
silky tannins and lingers on the fruity finish. A wine

Drink it over the next 7-8 years. Score: 92 (Robert
Parker Jr., erobertparker.com, Oct. 2012)
TASTING NOTE: Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie
have released their first wine, a 2012 rosé from
their Provence estate, Château Miraval. In a
blind tasting of a flight of Provençal rosés at
Wine Spectator’s New York office, the wine was
refined and elegant, with pure flavors of dried
red berry and tangerine, and a focused finish
with flint and spice notes. Score: 90 (Kim Marcus,

TAVEL ROSÉ 2012

(Jean-Pierre & Pascal Lafond, Prop.-Récolt.)
TASTING NOTE: An even split of Grenache and
Syrah that is fermented in stainless steel and aged
all in concrete tank, the 2011 Mas des Bressades
Costières-de-Nîmes Cuvée Tradition is a supple,
elegant offering that has sweet cherry and darker
berry styled fruits, loads of spice, violets, and
licorice aromatics, medium body, and a silky,
polished texture. This builds in richness and depth
in the glass and has fine polished tannin lending
focus and length on the finish. Upfront and oh
so drinkable, it is a completely delicious red and
should be consumed over the coming 2-4 years.
Score: 88 (Jeb Dunnuck, therhonereport.com,
Sept. 2012)
TASTING NOTE: A serious dry rose, the 2012
Rose Roc-Epine, made from mostly Grenache,
Syrah and Cinsault, offers up a knockout profile
of ripe cherries, currants, rose petal and crushed
stone-like minerality to go with a medium-bodied,
rich, yet beautifully dry and focus mouthfeel.
No lightweight, with solid extract and density, this
impressive Tavel stays light, refreshing and
clean through the finish. Enjoy it over the coming

GERMANY – WHITE WINE
TASTING NOTE: ... Its hallmark is always refinement and balance. It is never a rustic Xinomavro,
but … it still preserves its essence and characteristics and expresses its terroir well … Caressing in
texture, yet increasingly powerful as it fleshes out
in the glass … it lingers on the palate and grips it.
… With extended aeration, it will show increasing
transparency and character, becoming earthier
and purer, more complex and transparent and
become interesting as well as tasty. It shows
the ability to change into something more with
age and it should age gracefully. … If you like
Xinomavro – or Barbaresco – this is a fine
overachiever … It is well worth seeking out. While
approachable with some air, it is pretty tight.

on the Richter scale of instant pleasure. Superior.

SPAIN – RED WINE
BERONIA RESERVA 2008
DOCa Rioja
TASTING NOTE: Rioja (REE-hoe-Ha!) is a state of
flux these days. You have a raft of producers
sticking to their old ways, another raft (can you
have 2 rafts?) modernizing and making wine in the
international style … But Beronia seems to skirt all
these issues and make great wine at a good value
year after year. They’re neither classic nor new,
producing a wine that definitely has seen some oak
but remains fresh and vibrant in the mouth. If
you’re new to rioja, this is a great place to start –
with the proviso that as you progress you’ll often
run into more expensive bottles that aren’t quite as
good. The 2005 vintage of this wine was sublime,
but the current offering – 2008 – is also a winner.
