Angels and Choirs, Fairytales and Clowns...
Santa rides into Town with best parade seen in decades
Reprinted from the
December 14th, 1961
Minnedosa Tribune
M
ore than 4,000 spectators braved the below zero weather on Saturday afternoon, December
9th, to witness the Kinsmen sponsored Minnedosa Christmas Parade, and
possibly, with the exception of a few frostbitten
noses, none had occasion
to regret it.
Santa’s
chariot
was preceded by 28 floats
in the building of which
imagination, creative fancy and inventiveness had
mingled to underline the
main theme of the Yuletide and the birth of Christ.
A flock or some 20 clowns
escorted the parade, performing acrobatics and
generally entertaining the
audience.
All local service
clubs and lodges were represented, the Rotary Club,
the Royal Canadian Legion and their Auxiliary,
the B.P.O.E. and the ladies
of the Royal Purple, the
I.O.O.F. and the Rebekahs,
the Boy Scouts, the Beta
Sigma Phi sorority, had
floats, as well as the Home
and School Association,
the local Collegiate, the
Covenant Young People,
the Anglican Young People, the Minnedosa and
Cordova 4-H Clubs, the
Minnedosa Agricultural
Society, and numerous
private firms and business
establishments.
The main theme
was Christmas and its
spirit of “Peace on Earth”,
and it was evident in floats
carrying singing angels,
carolling choirs, Magi, the
Nativity, families sitting in
front of the fireplace in a
Yule-decorated room, an
impression of Christmas
Wonderland, reindeer; but
there were also the familiar personages well known
to the little ones: Jack
Spratt, Humpty-Dumpty,
Snow White and the Seven
Dwarfs, Red Riding Hood,
Peter Pumpkin and others.
The parade followed a course from the
northern town limits south
on Main Street to 3rd Avenue S.W. turning west at
that point and continuing on the avenue to 4th
Street S.W. where it turned
north to 2nd Avenue S.W.
continuing east on the latter until it reached Main
Street, and back to its point
of departure, the MinnToba Industries office. The
parade was led through its
full length by the Minnedosa Miniature Majorettes
and by the smartly marching Cadet Corps.
After the floats
had returned to base, Santa
established his headquarters in the Armoury where
he dispensed largesse in
the form of 1,500 bags of
candy and innumerable
cups of chocolate milk to
his young admirers.
Prizes
were
awarded for the best floats
by a jury composed of the
Revs. K. Boughton, G.A.
Kerr, and Mrs. Alice Lee.
First prize went to the
Home and School float
which carried a gowned
and surpliced carol-singing choir, angels, three
young Magi with camels and a representative
piano player with his instrument; second went to
the Minnedosa Collegiate
for their representation
of Snow White and the
Seven Dwarfs; third to the
Minnedosa 4-H Beef Calf
Club for a scene of Nativity. An honourable mention went to the windmill
decorated Dutch scene put
out by Jim Alexander.
And so ended,
in the unanimous opinion of older residents, the
best and most successful
Christmas parade held in
Minnedosa within the last
decade.
A tribute
to the
parade
participants
The following

We See it Column of

Editor, Fred Gadbois.
organization setup by the
sponsoring Kinsmen, and
because of the strong support they received from
civic, social, and charitable
associations.
All this, however,
good organization, variety of floats with the work
put into them, would have
been unavailing toward
success had not the float
occupants shown such
stern sense of duty. To
stand, or sit, for an hour or
so in below zero weather,
to feel yourself gradually growing number and
number with the cold, and
yet manage a smile and a
wave, requires a lot of determination and courage.
Particularly on the part of
the children, one of whom,
at least, fainted at the end
of the route and had to be
carried off her float into
the Minn-Toba office.
To all of those who
took part in the preparation
and the execution of this
parade; to the clowns, who
drew everybody’s pleased
comments, to the drivers,
who must have frequently
felt like rubbing their nose,
to the adults, teenagers
and young children, who
played their part without a
whimper or even a thought
of quitting, our hat is off.
They have deserved well of
their community and their
effort has been widely appreciated, as shown by the
thousands of spectators
who watched and admired
the progress of the parade.
We are sure that
the memory of this manifestation will long remain as a
milestone in the town’s history of Santa Claus Parades.
It will prove a very high
mark to shoot at in coming
years.
Well done, Minnedosa!

At Christmas my favorite thing to do is play the
present stealing game. How to play: the game
goes youngest to oldest when it is your turn
you can take a present from the pile or
you can steal a present when you take a
present “watch out”! Someone can steal your
present when it is their turn! My grandma makes
these yummy snacks called Pigs in a Blanket.
They look like little hot dogs “but they’re not”.
Maybe mom will bring some indoor snores. They
are good, I hope mom brings some. I knew you
were going to ask about my uncle Terry. Well,
I don’t know where to start. Me and my uncle
Terry both stear hay rides and sing thanksgiving songs on Christmas. Yes on Christmas!
My favorite thing to do at Christmas is I like
to see my sister and my family members. On
Christmas and we have a big Christmas dinner
with our cousins and my Grandma comes over
with our cousins. We have pie and we have fun
with our family members. My cousins and I go
sledding. We play family games like Uno and we
play cards and we have fun.
At Christmas time I go to my Grandma Lornna’s
or I go to Grandma Lenda’s we see Grandma,
Papa, Leo, Auntie Desora, Victoia, Harly, Uncle
Steve, Katey, Logen and Auntie Coney. We
go down stairs and play blueberry girl. It’s
when the girl is down low and you get a big
bouncey ball and throw it at her. When we’re at
Grandma Lonna’s we put up the Christmas
tree and we see Grandma, Papa, Mattheuw,
Auntie Shell, Uncle Lary, Ava, Jenna, Auntie
Donna, Uncle D, Uncle Kevin, Hidi, Mom, Dad,
Jordyn and I. The game we play is tea.
By Robert Sinclair
At Christmas time my favorite thing to do is
having Christmas dinner with my family. I
always go to my Grandma’s for Christmas
dinner. I do it on Christmas Day. It is a lot of
fun. A couple of my grandma’s friends come over.
My other favourite thing about Christmas is

At Christmas time my favorite thing is
decorating the tree with my family. We
have a fake tree. It goes on by letters. We
usually go to my Grandma’s but this year
we are staying home. On Christmas we wake
up and unwrap presents and then we have
dinner. I think we are going to have turkey.
My favourite ornament is all of them that
say my name which is practically all of them.
We also play games. My favorite game is
Battleship and Yatzee. Then on the next day,
Boxing day, is my sister’s birthday.
At Christmas time my family goes to Grandma’s.
We have pie and cake. My favorite thing to
do is go outside and play games. I have lots
of fun with my cousins. We play tag, we run
and we make Christmas crafts. We go to my
auntie’s too.
At Christmas time my favorite thing to do
is decorate the Christmas tree with my
family. My brother and my mom do it with me.
I bake and frost cookies. My sister Kayla and
Aaron help me bake them. When the family gets
together we play games I can’t

At Christmas time my favorite thing to do is
put up the Christmas tree. One time, I had my
hot wheels and put the track through the
Christmas tree a few weeks before Christmas.
This year we are having our cousins come for
Christmas. Merry Christmas.
At Christmas time my favorite things to do
are spend time with family. We usually have
3 Christmas’es. One with my Grandma Ruby,
Grandad Norman, and our friend Grandma Lamb.
Then we have one with my Grandma Carolyn,
Grandpa Doug, and Auntie. Finally we have
Crawley Christmas when all my cousins come.
My 2nd favorite thing is eating good food. On
Crawley Christmas everyone brings something.

At Christmas time favorite things to do are
playing a game where we put on mittens and
try to open the presents. Who ever gets a six
with dice will get to try to open the presents
and they get what ever is in it. It is very fun
to play but its very hard. We put on at least
ten layers of wrapping paper. On the last
row there is usually duct tape or painter’s
tape. It is the best game in the world. I also
really like to see my family because I don’t
get to see all my family often.
At Christmas time my favorite thing to do is
have a supper at my Grandma’s house. After
supper we go outside and make a fort with
snow. We do it on Christmas Eve. Christmas I
get up, have to go get my mom up then we
go open our presents when we play with our
presents all day.

Dad and the man go chop the tree. We look at
Archie comics or play with Barbies. My other
favorite is decorating the Christmas tree.
We have a whole bunch of decorations. My
favorite thing to put on the tree is a Rudolph

tree we listen to Christmas carols and my dad
plays Christmas songs on the piano. Then we
plug in the lights and go to sleep.

2 cups creamed honey
1 cup smooth peanut butter

Prepare a 10x15 cookie sheet. Wet your hand and rub it over the cookie sheet to dampen. Spread
with aluminum foil. Water droplets will help aluminum stick to the pan and prevent sliding. In a
large saucepan, combine chocolate chips and honey. Cook on low heat until chocolate starts to
melt, stirring occasionally. Increase to medium and stir constantly until mixture is boiling. Take off
heat and add peanut butter. Mix until smooth. Add peanuts and mix. Spread mixture onto cookie
sheet and use spatula to smooth into all corners. Let stand for several hours or overnight.
Refrigerate for 15 min.’s before cutting into squares or shapes of desired size. Store in sealed

hristmas
means
something different
to everybody. Everyone
has their own traditions and memories of
the holiday, whether it
is making the perfect
snowman or the perfect gingerbread house.
For some people the
best memories are the
ones spent skidooing
with their friends or for
some, it’s snowboarding on fresh powder in
the mountains. When
asked what my favourite holiday is, I always
answer with no hesitation, Christmas. I love
the thought of curling up with a big blanket, watching the puffy
snowflakes fall from
the sky, as if to almost
look like glitter. I love
the smell of my Mom’s
homemade
cookies
wafting through the air.
Walking into the living
room and seeing your
Christmas tree all lit up
is the kind of excitement
that I like the most. I love
all the curiosity Christmas brings when seeing
the gifts under your tree.
These are the things that
I love about Christmas
and look forward to every year. My family has
their typical traditions,
every Christmas Eve
we always have a big
get-together and have
the most amazing dinner. My Mama makes it
the best; the smell when
you walk into the kitchen is like no other smell.
The turkey and the gravy
and the stuffing and
the meatballs, so much
food! I could never
choose a favourite. But,
my Nana’s mashed potatoes are truly the best.
Only my family knows
the secret recipe to
making these mashed
potatoes famous. All
my cousins know that
Nana’s mashed potatoes
are one of a kind and
Wishing you and your loved ones all the
wonder and magic of Christmas.

we wouldn’t dare tell
a soul what the secret
was. Spending time with
my cousins and having
my family all together
means a lot to me. Having those memories that
you’ll remember forever
is so special. As crazy
as they are, I can’t get
enough of them. Even
though some of my relatives live so far away,
when them come home
we somehow all connect
like they’d never left and
after Christmas holidays
is over, it’s nearly boring
without them. The day
after Christmas, I find,
is one of those satisfying
days when you’re completely and utterly exhausted and you think
to yourself “Man, I’m so
glad there’s no school
tomorrow.”
May the Peace and
Joy that is in your
homes at Christmas,
last throughout the
coming year.
