I began seeing Dr. Croucher in August 2008 for relief of my migraines. After several adjustments, I asked Dr. Croucher if there was anything he could do to help relieve some of the joint pain I experience because I also suffer from Lupus, he said 'ABSOLUTELY." He began working on my knees, wrist and elbows as well as on my back and neck. Now, six months into my care, my migraines are less frequent and less intense. I would classify them as headaches instead of migraines. I receive immediate relief from the joint pain with each adjustment. I continue to follow Dr. Croucher's treatment plan and anticipate further relief from these ailments. Pam Richards Learn more! I I By Steve McMahon bvillehistory@earthlinicnet This week's story is about the Dinglehole School, District no. 11, seventh in a series regarding our early schools. At one time it was also known as the Lamson District School and was built on land loaned by a farmer named Butler. As of 1947, the land was still owned by his granddaughter, Nellie Rumsey. Now a private residence, the building sits on the northeast corner of Lamson and Dinglehole roads. This spot is situated just south of the Cayuga County line, about halfway between Little Utica on the west and Wright's Corners on the east. The short drive east to Wright's Corners will take you first through the former hamlet of Lamson. Slow down when you cross the railroad tracks, or you will have passed it. One hundred years ago, this was a busy place. It was an important trading and transportation center for the farmers who lived in northwestern Lysander, and even folks from Granby. From the Lamson depot, the DL&W railroad transported everything from people to potatoes to points beyond. And, the Lamson-Phoenix stagecoach would ferry folks back and forth between these two towns, as they arrived or departed by train. My great-grandfather disembarked in this very railroad depot on May 28, 1890, at the age of 18, when he arrived from England. He walked the three miles to Jacksonville and stayed for the next 79 years of his life. But, many more folks departed than arrived. The little hamlet of Lamson faded into memory One long-time resident of Lamson shared her memories in a Messenger article dated Dec. 30, 1965. Mrs. Lewis Scriber remembered that "Lamson was named after George Washington Lamson and his wife, Sarah. They erected the large, threestory building, which later became known as Scriber's hall and store. The Lamsons put up the enormous wooden hotel around 1850 to house and board construction workers on the new railroad. Mrs. Scriber points out that the original Lamsons were great-grandparents of Glenn Blakeman and Flossie Smith Reeves." Glenn and Flossie were brother and sister and lifelong residents of the area. Flossie taught in several of the rural school districts of Lysander including Fenner, Jacksonville, Plainville and Chestnut Ridge. So much for Lamson's history, but what about Dinglehole? For well over 100 years, the origin of the place-name Dinglehole (or Dingle Hole) has been in question. In the 1946 Centennial Edition of the Baldwinsville Gazette and Farmers' Journal, Mrs. John (Ella) Bellows explained the most likely source. "When asked the reason for the name 'Dingle Hole'.. .Mrs. Bellows revealed that Otis Bigelow had told her the significance of that name. It seems that there is a low spot in the terrain in that territory covered by water, a water hole to which in the early days, cattle flocked to drink. In the pioneer days, before trees had been cut to any great extent, it was common practice for farmers to place a bell around the neck of each cow so that they might hear them in rounding them up. The bell sound, 'dingle,' and the water 'hole' became combined into Dingle Hole." Eva Young Maxam repeated this same story She lives on former Bellows land and, like Mrs. Bellows before her, Eva is a long-time resident. We want to hear about her! She may have overcome a seemingly-insurmountable hurdle. Maybe she's made a difference with her caring, generous nature. Or perhaps she is "supermom," able to work, play and somehow still make the little things count. They inspire, help others and go the extra mile. "Can't" is not in their vocabulary. With our Just for Women supplement coming in April, now is the perfect time to let us know about these women of strength and how they help make our communities vibrant and successful. If you know just such a woman, please contact us. We will print their profiles and what it is that makes them strong in Just For Women. Put the games aside The Onondaga County Legislature met in regular session on March 3. This month was unfortunately a mix of good legislation and bad party politics. First the good; the Legislature was asked to authorize an additional $200,000, all federally reimbursed dollars, to add two more miles to the trail around Onondaga Lake. This authorization will allow the trail to go from the parking lot at the State Fair and connect to the southerly pedestrian bridge over Route 690. We are hoping to have construction begin this summer and be completed next year Now the bad. Two of the most important projects that were on our agenda fell victim to petty politics. The Democratic Caucus voted in block to defeat necessary bonding resolutions for Van Duyn Home and Hospital and the Onondaga County War Memorial. In order to take full advantage of grant money and low construction costs, both resolutions were of a timely nature. Now these projects are in jeopardy because of games that were played. The Van Duyn proposal was for $4,693,847 in capital projects, which included strucAural improvements, necessary mechanical work, long overdue equipment replacement and an overhaul of emergency systems within the nursing home. Rich Lesniak To the editor: Now is still the time for those of us who love peace and social justice to be ever vigilant. The election of Barack Obama is not a signal that things will automatically be moving in the right direction. We want the occupation in Iraq to end. We want all US soldiers out of Afghanistan. We don't want the CIA to continue torturing people under the guise of interrogation and we refuse to live under a federal surveillance state. We want to sit down with Iran not war with Iran. We r want a Middle East policy that is evenhanded and not dictated by AIPAC or any other neocon group. We want to banish corporate lobbyists, who dominate Washington, from crucial policy decisions. We want "illegal" immigrants to be treated with respect and given opportunities that Jewish, Italian, Irish and German immigrants had. We want single payer universal health care. We want a world whereby everyone is recognized as equal no matter his or her religion, skin color, ethnicity sexual orientation, income, disability or any other difference. We want the enormous tax breaks for the wealthy to end and the dosing of tax loopholes, which enable them to pay proportionately less tax than the rest of us. We want a progressive income tax whereby each individual pays his or her fair share. We want the military budget cut by 25 percent and we want the complete abolition of nuclear weapons. We want a green country so that our children are able to breath fresh air and drink clean water. We want wind power and solar power not nuclear power. The struggle for peace and social justice never ends and all of us who work for a better world will never give up. Three students, all dressed as the Grim Reaper, roamed the hallways of the high school in search of their "victims," 67 students who volunteered to represent the dead. When the Grim Reaper visited Bianca Knieriem's French class, she left the room to have her face painted white to indicate she Was acting as an accident victim. She quietly returned to class and spent the rest of the day in silence. Once their faces were painted, students who represented the dead could not speak for the rest of the day. Their quiet presence in the classrooms at the high school was a solemn reminder of the tragic consequences of destructive decisions. White Out Day at the high Carolyn Brussel, (rien) dressed as a character from an American Dolls book that she read, gives her presentation to classmates ICatelyn Brown paints Bianca Kilieriem's face white as the Grim Reaper looks on during Baker High School's observance of White Out Day. Students who had their faces painted represented young lives lost in alcohol-related car accidents. school coincided with the Gone 4 Ever traveling exhibit, which was on display for the week of Feb. 23 at the school. The multimedia exhibit depicts three fatal automobile accidents in which five young lives were lost. It was created to deter teens from drinking and driving or riding in a car with a drunk driver. Strength training offers seniors, in .particular, the ability to sidestep frailty, disability, and the loss of independence that often accompanies aging. Despite widespread acknowledgment of strength training's benefits, however, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that there has been only a slight increase in the percentage of people who have added strength training to their exercise routine in recent years. In fact, in the United States, slightly less than 22 percent of adult men and 18 percent of adult women engage in strength training twice per week. These percentages are well below the government's Healthy People 2010 goal of having 30 percent of American adults making strength training part of their health regimen. Common perception has been that the loss of strength and muscle mass is a normal result of the aging process. While a certain decrease is to be expected, deterioration of the physical state is as much a result of inactivity as nature. Some of the benefits of strength training include heavier bone density, improved balance and increased total strength. If you or a family member needs physical therapy, please call our clinic. We are located at 207 Pine Street in Syracuse. Please call 315-476-3176 to schedule an appointment PS. If you are arthritic or have some other condition that hinders your ability to engage in strength training, a physical therapist may be of significant assistance. Despite traveling at a young age without their parents, both the King and Wallace families trust their children are in good hands. "It is a bit scary to think of my child, who will be 15 at the time of the trip, visiting other countries without us," said Lisa King, Andrew's mother. "However, we have been so Impressed with the People to People organization and have a comfort level about how structured the program is and how responsible and experienced the adult leaders are. It is a tremendous opportunity for Andrew, and [his father and I] are proud that he will be able to participate." Andrew also looks forward to the trip and how it will help him better understand other cultures. "I think this will help me work well with other people," Andrew said. "I can't wait to visit other countries and talk with people so I can better understand our similarities and differences." Shannon also sees great opportunity in her upcoming trip. "I [think People to People will] be a good opportunity to see how other kids live in differ. ent countries and to experience their cultures." she said "I'm hoping it will make me better understand new and different things." "Hopefully she will gain a new perspective on the world around her by being exposed to different cultures," her mother Jennette added. Families were recently invited to the Baldwinsville Public Library to learn more about the People to People program. There, Louisa Gurgel, an exchange student from Hamburg, Germany, shared informational tidbits about her homeland with participants. Jennette and William Wallace (Shannon's parents) were impressed with Gurgel's presentation, specifically with the girl's maturity level and how differently her culture treats education. Andrew noted how lunch is considered the most important meal of the day in Germany. "Kids of Germany leave school at about one o'clock to go home and eat lunch with their families," he said. "They also have about three to four hours of homework a night." His mother, Lisa, found Gurgel's description of differences between German youth and United States youth intriguing. "They live with their families in relatively small homes or apartments with little to no yard, spend little time watching TV or playing video games, and they mostly get around via mass transit systems and seem to have a very active cultural lifestyle," she said. "They are focused on the environment and spending time outside." The group will embark on their journey July 7 and return July 25. • • • • • • • • • ** • $ • 1 Dinglehole From page 3 than Eva. "We lived south of Eva. I went through all six grades at Dinglehole from 1945 to 1951. My first teacher was Mrs. Haus from Phoenix, and she was killed in an accident my first year. We were just devastated because she was such a delight. And then Mrs. (Madeline) McManus took over. She lived down across from Eva. She was an older lady, but she knew how to keep us in line when we tried to 'snow' her" Jan remembers that it was probably a walk of about threequarters of a mile to school. "I can remember having to be really alert in the winter because the snow plows would come up behind me.! was afraid of not being able to get up and over the snow bank before they hit me. It never happened of course, but I was prepared with a plan of escape." Eva said she didn't walk, because her father wouldn't let her "He would take me to school by car. One day, it was so bad that he rode on horseback to get me. He brought me and Jim Bellows back by horseback. When Jim went to get off, the horse was cold and didn't want to stand sr still, so Jim fell off." Jan said, "When you walked into the school there was a hallway and the teacher stood there ringing a bell. You hung up your coat. On opposite ends of the hallway there were inside 'one-holers,' one for boys and for girls. In the wintertime, we tried to hold it because it was unheated. There was a wooden bench out there underneath the coat rack, and that's where we put our benches. The classes were all in single rows. The teacher would give you your lessons, so you would be busy with your homework when she was working with the other grades. The main thing back then is that the teachers were allowed to discipline. And you had enormous respect for your teachers, and you knew what would happen if you didn't. Your parents would get involved, but it was more than that. You just respected and trusted them because they were in authority. Don't get me wrong. You knew that when the teacher walked up with that ruler you were going to get cracked across your knuckles." Eva proudly showed me an old report card that she had saved. "As far as I'm concerned I got a good education at the Dinglehole School. I fit right in with all firki 4 About 25 years ago at the peak of political correctness, New York State DEC searched its maps and found 45 locales with potentially offensive names. Dinglehole was one of them. After spending significant time and money to research the scatology meaning behind the name, the bureaucrats concluded that "Dingle" could be traced to the Middle English word for a small, wooded valley. So, the name was socially acceptable after all, and it stayed. By the way, Middle English as a language expired prior to 1700, while this area wasn't settled until after 1800. And, if they had just driven down Dinglehole Road, they would have discovered a swamp, not a valley. More important, the locals like the name. So, let's keep it forever. Like some of 'the folks hereabouts, the name gives the place character. In two weeks read the next article in the series, "Lysander Goes to School." At Christmas we'd always make something for our mothers. One time we made tie-backs for their curtains. We always had a Christmas party and my mother would make me a new dress for the party each year. They were hard times. I don't know as I went without anything in particular, but I know that I didn't have anything extra. I had peanut butter and jelly for lunch every clay, and mom made the crabapple jelly from our own apples." I asked Jan what made rural schools so special. There was a long pause, but it was worth the wait. "Now that I look back on it, it was a lot like family," she said. "I was an only child with no brothers or sisters, so it was a lot like an extended family for me. I don't remember any cliques or rivalry. There were no fights. Everybody just got along. It was just a good feeling to get up every morning and be with the same gang every day. Now that the snow, is finally geranium) are members of the genus While these plants ore members of disappearing, I can't wait for my perennial garden to begin showing signs of life! However, a couple of weeks ago while discussing our gardens, a friend of mine tried to convince me that the beautiful redflowered geraniums I ovetwinter indoors in day pots are not related*, the numerous perennial geraniums that are so lovely when they come into bloom in my gardens during the summer. We've decided to let you settle our friendly argument. Geranium. Most of the more than 300 species in this genus are native to relatively moist woodlands and rocky outcroppings of southern Europe and the eastern Mediterranean, though several species are native/ naturalized in Central New York. Meanwhile, your red-flowered geraniums, which are sold by the thousands each spring in local garden centers, are actually hybrids of members of the genus Pelargonium. Roughly eighty A. The herbaceous perennial percent of the 230 or so species of geraniums that survive the winters in this genus are native to the very dry gardens all across upstate New York (ten inches of rain per year or less), (one of my favorites is 'Karmina' western Cape region of South Africa. different genera, both belong to the family Geraniaceoe. So, you ore correct - these plants are related! The distinguishing characteristic that brings these plants together is the way they disperse their seed. All members of the family possess a "beak's-like structure that's on extension of the carpel which surrounds the ripening seeds. As the fibers inside this structure dry, the tension eventually becomes so great that the carpels pull apart and launch the seed several feet to several yards from the parent plant! The 'beaks' of Pelargonium locum flowers ore much larger than those of many other members of the Geroniocecie family.
