GOODFELLOW’S ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITMENT
On February 16th, 2005, Goodfellow obtained the SmartWood certification
from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). This certification recognizes
Goodfellow’s supply chain as environmentally responsible. SmartWood
products are certified as coming from forests that are managed in an
eco-responsible manner. Goodfellow also offers many products that may
contribute towards LEED credits. The Leasdership in Energy and Environmental
Design (LEED) program was established by the United States Green Building
Council (USGBBC) to promote environmentally friendly whole building design
and construction practices.

RESPONSIBLE INITIATIVES
TREATED WOOD
Goodfellow’s environmental policy involves limiting any negative impacts
of its operations at all levels and adopting responsible business practices.
Over the past few years, a number of company initiatives have demonstrated
Goodfellow’s commitment to preserving the environment.
Goodfellow was among the first manufacturers to market wood treated with
ProNature brand ACQ (Alkaline Copper Quaternary). ACQ, which contains no
arsenic, has replaced CCA for residential usage.
RECYCLING EFFORT
Over the past 10 years, Goodfellow recovered all booms from the Gatineau,
Ottawa and Saint-Maurice rivers. They amounted to no fewer than 1,500 tractortrailer loads. Many of the pieces were stripped of their damaged surfaces and
put back on the market.
As well, on the immense site of Goodfellow’s headquarters in Delson, most of
the 31 buildings are steel structures that come from former buildings, including
the Centre Paul Sauvé in Montreal, Canadian Tire stores and former government
buildings. This practice continues today… in fact, Goodfellow is putting up a
huge new building using materials recovered from a shed in Montreal’s Old Port.
A final example is on the Delson site. All wood waste (remnants, shavings and
chips) is considered a resource. It is recovered to serve as fuel in low-emission
boilers used to heat the buildings.
Goodfellow’s wood treatment plant operates in a completely closed circuit.
There is practically no waste. Goodfellow tests the surface and ground waters
three times a year to make sure there is no contamination.
As well, treating wood with a preservative helps limit deforestation. Since wood
is pressure-treated to protect against mould and insects, the wood lifespan is
increased, wood cutting is reduced and our forests are preserved.
