A client shared her story about how she had made an appointment at an abortion clinic, but decided to see the staff and volunteers at Heartbeat of Toledo first. Her son's picture graced the projector screens behind her, and you could hear his giggles from the back of the room. To say I was moved would be an understatement. The strength and courage of this young mother blew me away. She had me in tears when she talked about what life would have been like had she not chosen life. That very day my husband and I became donors. Fast forward six years and two more kids, I am not only a donor but serving as President of the Board of Directors. I am ecstatic at what this organization has accomplished and the difference we continue to make in this community. To this day, I am still moved by the courage and strength of these mothers. I will never grow tired of hearing their stories. For me, their stories are what solidifies my faith and my dedication to Heartbeat. I cannot express the level of gratitude that I have for all of you. As a result of your support, Heartbeat has opened and expanded our second location in East Toledo with our eyes set on taking our services mobile. While our social landscape will always be changing, our purpose will not. We are making a difference in the lives of our clients and their families. We will continue to strive to be the first stop for women facing an unplanned pregnancy and continue to serve as a support system for them. I invite each of you to contact the office and take a tour of either one of our locations. See your support in action. I think you will be amazed and moved. Thank you for your support and joining us in celebrating and protecting the precious gift of life! Sincerely, Amanda Geletka President, Board of Trustees Heartbeat board members met this summer for a retreat to strategize for the year ahead as well as into the future. Serving on the board are Amanda Geletka, Brady Fineske, Elizabeth LaValley, Rusty Belcher, Marianne Knitz, Phil Bollin, Kris Bottles, Ron Finn, David Hammack, Jim Herrick, Kate Kelly, Laura McIntyre, John Morrissey, Mary Pope, Harvey Popovich, and Father Dan Zak. 2 Stories From Heartbeat Recently, India, a nursing student from Athena Career Academy, came to observe at our Your First Look Women’s Center as part of a class requirement. She was warm and sweet and charming. As the day wore on, she shared that she had been to Your First Look in 2013 when she was facing an unplanned pregnancy. We asked her to share her story. This is what she said. “Of all the challenges I’ve faced in life, being pregnant at the age of 20 was by far the scariest experience. There was so much uncertainty on what I should do. I felt as if I had no one to run to. I didn’t want to see the shame and regret on the faces of my peers because I felt the news was just that bad. So I decided to schedule an appointment at Your First Look. The impact of that one appointment helped me make one of the greatest decisions of my life. “My son will be 2 years old this upcoming December and I can’t imagine my life without him. My purpose in life—I’m more than certain—was becoming a mother. It is the best calling. Thanks Your First Look for all your support.” In 2015 we did 925 pregnancy tests and 1,137 ultrasounds. Most of those women were scared like India. We were able to give them the information they needed and empower them to make a decision for life. Still others came because they were pregnant or a new parent and needed support. Here are just a few of their stories: Cara* started at Heartbeat about two months ago. She is seven months pregnant now with her second child. Her older son comes with her to lessons when he has a day off of school. Cara lost custody of her son when they were evicted about two years ago, and he lived with a foster family until she got back on her feet. She regained custody of her son and has worked so hard to set up living arrangements with her mother down south. They will be moving there soon and look forward to being with her family. She is so excited for the fresh start with her little family and the new baby! Even through the struggles they faced, she is one of the strongest moms we have ever known. Lisa* originally came to Your First Look with her husband because she had a positive pregnancy test. She already had two children and was trying to get her nursing license. The timing for another baby was not great. When she saw twins on the ultrasound she was a bit shocked, but recovered fairly quickly and made a decision for life. She is now in our Heart to Heart Parent Learning Program. She initially joined to earn free baby items but tells us she is always excited to learn about something new. Her husband or a friend regularly join her for classes. Candace* was set on having a chemical abortion but told Abbi, who answers our Helpine, that she would come in to our East Toledo office to confirm whether her pregnancy was viable. The ultrasound showed identical twins. Candace then decided to continue her pregnancy but asked if there was help available. She met with Monique, our community health worker, who was able to help connect her with local community resources. *names changed 3 Defenders of Life Gifts of $10,000+ Kevin & Kathleen Kelly Estate of Rev. The East Toledo Your First Look location opened in March of 2014. Demand quickly grew and Heartbeat was scrambling to accommodate the new and expectant moms and dads who wanted to take prenatal and parenting lessons and earn much-needed baby items. “We doubled and tripled appointments so we could help more women,” says Laura Timmerman, manager of the East Toledo office. “Last spring Heartbeat became aware that the business down the hall from the Your First Look office was relocating. After looking at it, we knew it would be a perfect Heartbeat office,” she adds. The new space has an office as well as two classrooms and a large area for the baby boutique. “When we were trying to have everything in the Your First Look cont. on page 9 A client and her son at the new East Toledo Heartbeat office. This space has two classrooms and a large baby boutique. A Good Year Financially by Rusty Belcher, Treasurer, Heartbeat Board of Trustees On paper, it appears that Heartbeat had a $35,000 loss this past fiscal year. The reality though is that this deficit is actually about $35,000 less than was expected. When we created the budget, we had a planned deficit of about $70,000. This was the result of a fundraising effort held in the fall of Heartbeat Financials June 2014-May 2015 8 Income Contributed Support Earned Revenues Fundraisers’ Income Total Income: $222,317.20 $ 1155.65 $264,025.44 $487,498.29 Expenses Heart to Heart Salaries & Related Exp. Fundraiser income was up this past year due to our two-night banquet and a generous bequest from a Heartbeat donor. On the expenses side, the most significant area of growth was in salaries. Heartbeat now has 13 employees, including two paid sonographers, a nurse sonographer, and a medical services manager. We have significantly expanded our medical services at Your First Look and also hired staff for our East Toledo location. Fundraising expenses were also higher due to the fact that banquet dinners are complimentary and we had more attendees. Another new expense for this year, of course, is East Toledo. Rent, furnishings, and other startup expenses are included in that total. Advertising expenses continue at about $30,000. Most advertising is done online using Google ads. We also have a billboard in East Toledo and advertising at the University of Toledo and Owens Community College. These are the best ways for Heartbeat to reach women for our Your First Look Women’s Center. Occupancy expenses were higher because we rented additional space at our West Sylvania location to create three extra offices as well as more storage space. The 2015-2016 budget year is now underway. The summer months are always slow for giving, but we anticipate that our donors will continue to support our very important mission. Our Mission Heartbeat is a lifeaffirming organization whose mission is to be the best source of information & support for women facing pregnancies and to provide assistance to moms, dads, and babies in need. Year in Review from page 8 suite, we tried to cram all of the baby items into a small corner of the office. But the space just wasn’t big enough for us to adequately offer diapers, formula, wipes, and baby clothes, much less strollers or high chairs,” Laura adds. Heartbeat staff continues to work to improve its approach with women who are facing unplanned pregnancies. “We are always evaluating each step in our process to see if there are better ways to serve women and give them the confidence they need to make a decision for life,” says Leeann Beach, patient services director. “The best way to do that is to help the women realize they can trust us and that our focus is on supporting them.” Forming new partnerships were a big part of this past fiscal year. Heartbeat began partnering with the Toledo Northwest Ohio Foodbank to get low-cost baby wipes. Other partnerships are with Vitamin Angels to get free prenatal vitamins and the Ohio Hospital Council to help pregnant women get access to much needed resources including doctors, insurance, housing and more (see related story on page 11. Have an abortion? What about adoption? Then, after she’s made that allimportant decision to continue the pregnancy, she may then be wondering what her next steps should be. She may be concerned about whether she can afford to get prenatal care, where she will live, and Octavia is one of the expectant moms enrolled in the Pathways Program through Heartbeat. Heartbeat Wish List With the coming of the winter months there are many things we need to help our little ones stay warm. Can you help with…? Diapers Similac Advance & Soy Powder Formula Clothing, Especially Sleepers, (up to 2T) Winter Coats Snowsuits Onesies – 6 Months & Up (long and short sleeve) Bottles Pacifiers Receiving Blankets AA, C, & D batteries (for toys) New Toys for our Christmas Giving Tree (for birth up to age 5) if there is anyone who can help her. Fortunately, in Northwest, Ohio, help is available. Formed in 2006, the Northwest Ohio Pathways HUB has worked to improve birth outcomes in Lucas County by identifying pregnant women most at risk for having low birth weight babies and connecting them to community resources. Pregnant women need early and regular prenatal care to help ensure their babies are born full term and at a healthy weight. Unfortunately, not all women have a support system to help care for themselves, manage stress and receive prenatal care. This past spring, Heartbeat was awarded a grant from the Hospital Council of Northwest Ohio to become part of the Pathways Program. “It just makes sense for us to be part of this program, because so many women come to us who are pregnant and need help to continue their pregnancies,” notes Pat Todak, executive director. Monique Guerroro (right), Heartbeat’s community health worker, attended a Partners for a Healthy Baby Conference where she learned how best to help expectant moms have a healthy pregnancy. Here she is with the trainer, Natalia. Heartbeat’s Monique Guerrero became the community health worker at Heartbeat who meets with expectant moms. Her job is to find at-risk pregnant women and connect them to medical care and provide health education. She helps moms secure medical insurance, find a doctor, enroll in the Women Infant Children program, and also join Heartbeat’s Heart to Heart Parent Learning Program. Since beginning the program in June, Heartbeat has 42 women enrolled in the program. Pathways reports that, since the beginning of this program, there has been a dramatic decrease in the number of women delivering low birth weight babies in Lucas County compared to the state and country. You know—peace on earth and goodwill to men. Then why is it that many women feel so stressed between Thanksgiving and Christmas? Maybe it’s preparing two large meals, buying and writing Christmas cards, decorating, buying gifts and much more. That was the idea behind Dine & Dash, Heartbeat of Toledo’s first women’s luncheon planned for Thursday, December 10, at the Hilton Garden Inn in Perrysburg. It’s meant to be a short respite for women in the midst of the craziness of the holiday season. Our featured speaker is Barb Roose, a local author and motivational speaker who will talk about her own experiences with letting go of the less-important details of the holiday season and focusing on the wondrous parts. (Learn more about Barb at www.barbroose.com.) To make the event even more efficient, we will have plenty of vendors, so attendees can also wrap up their Christmas shopping if they wish. Silent auction packages will also be available. Barb Roose will be the featured speaker at Dine & Dash. Barb is a local author and motivational speaker. Her book is titled, “Enough Already: Winning Your Ugly Struggle with Beauty.” Doors will open at 10:30 a.m. for those wishing to shop and bid on the silent auction items. If you have a limited lunch hour, plan to arrive at noon for a delicious lunch, a great speaker, and the chance to support Heartbeat. We’ll have you back on your way to work by 1 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to help support our mission by bringing a new or gently used baby item or a pack of diapers for a family in need. Cost of the luncheon is $30 per person. You can register online at www.heartbeatoftoledo.org. (There is a $2.64 per person online registration fee).
