At last, enthusiasts can get together one more time and experience that unique ambience. Indeed, more than 30,000 visitors are expected this weekend at the Dijon-Prenois circuit. The organisers are happy to introduce the new version they have been working on for months, to ensure that this twenty-second Coupes Moto Légende will feature that original, superlative touch whereby the events all look alike but they are never the same. Pilots who have contributed to motorcycle legend with their impressive track records will be on hand to liven up the track. Johnny Cecotto, 350cc World Champion in 1975, will be attending for the first time, together with the likes of Giacomo Agostini, Steve Baker, Phil Read, Christian Sarron, Dieter Braun, Rodney Gould, Julius Kremer, Werner Schwarzel, Andreas Huber, Alain Michel and Freddie Spencer. As they travel the Dijon-Prenois circuit, riding the very bikes that once took them on to victory, they will be sharing that emotional ride with the public. They will all be right there, rubbing shoulders with the crowd and happy to sign autographs. With its unique, festive ambience, Coupes Moto Légende is above all an opportunity to admire demonstrations on the track bringing together 1,000 motorcycles dating from the earliest models to 1985 and broken down into 12 categories. Enthusiasts will also come to meet with the exhibitors, the professionals, the exchange mart participants and the clubs who will be attending all weekend. This 22nd edition will resemble a giant open-air museum. Two museums (Birmingham and Hockenheim) will honour us with their presence as they display and operate exceptional machines, some of which have never been seen in France. Founded 1992 Amount of visitors (2013): 30,000 Demonstration participants: 1,000 Exhibitors (clubs, professionals, exchange mart participants, manufacturers): 300 -3- World Champions Giacomo AGOSTINI List of victories: a 15-time World Champion, he is the pilot with the most titles in history Nationality: Italian Motorcycle: MV AGUSTA 500 GP 1968 (Plate 124) YAMAHA 500 OW 53 1981 (Plate 166) It was back in 1965 that Giacomo Agostini, aka “Ago”, began his collaboration with MV Agusta, which was to end in 1973. His remarkable duels against rivals and the occasional teammate like Mike ‘The Bike’ Hailwood, Phil Read and Jarno Saarinen were absolutely unforgettable affairs, and they have erned a place in motor sports’ collective memory. Agostini rode in the 350cc category as well as the 500cc. He won in both categories in 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971 and 1972. He got his first Grand Prix victory on the Nürburgring circuit. Several victories ensued, to a total of fifteen World Speed Champion titles. In 1973, he joined Yamaha. He was World Champion runner-up in 1975, giving Yamaha its first manufacturer title in 1975. This magnificent career with its impressive record came to end in 1977, as he was still with Yamaha. He can look back on a brilliant career, packed with no less that fifteen World titles and a record 123 Grand Prix wins. To this day, he remains the most titled pilot in motorcycle sports history, and he keeps his bike passion alive by taking part in numerous events, like Coupes Moto Légende. -4- Steve Baker List of victories: Winner at Daytona (1976), Imola (1977/80), MJ 200 (1977) – Formula 750 World Champion in 1977 – Formula 500 Runner-up World Champion in 1978 Nationality: American Motorcycle: YAMAHA 500 YZR 1986 (Plate 170) YAMAHA 750 OW 31 1977 (Plate 171) This American racer managed to confound the greatest champions in the late seventies. After cutting his teeth in dirt track racing, he began his career in the Continental Circus, gradually becoming a true winner astride his bike. In 1975, Steve Baker took part in the "Moto Journal 200" on the Paul Ricard circuit at Le Castellet, and to everyone’s surprise he won the pole position and the lap record. During the race, he was in the lead for the first twelve laps, leaving the other contestants in the dust (Giacomo Agostini, Johnny Cecotto, Yvon Duhamel and also Patrick Pons). His career was a string of amazing feats. He was the first American racer to land a World Speed Championship title in the 750cc category in 1977, beating Christian Sarron. Dieter BRAUN List of victories: World Champion on 125cc in 1970 – World Champion on 250cc in 1973 Nationality: German Motorcycle: KAWASAKI 350 KR 1982 (Plate 108) He began his riding career in the 60s doing motocross, securing his first victory on the Avus circuit near Berlin in 1964. He tried his hand at Formula 3 racing but went back to bike competitions in 1967. After winning the German Championship, he took part in the 125cc World Championship in 1968. Despite his impressive stature (he is over six feet tall), he came in seventh. In 1969 he made runner-up World Champion before getting the title itself in 1970. He ranked fourth in 1971, still on 125cc. In 1972 he decided to change to 250cc, and made fourteenth. Dieter Braun took third place in the 250cc World Championship behind Michel Rougerie and Walter Vila, ranked fourth on 350cc and only thirteenth on 500cc. In 1976, he ended his career at age thirty-seven. -5- Johnny Cecotto List of victories: World Champion on 350cc in 1975, and on 750cc in 1978. He is the youngest titled pilot on 350cc. Nationality: Venezuelan Motorcycle: YAMAHA 750 OW31 1978 (Plate 173) Johnny Cecotto, whose real first name is Alberto, was born January 25th, 1956 in Caracas, Venezuela. He was only 15 when his father (himself a national speed champion on 500cc) offered him a Honda 750. The following year, in 1972, he started taking part in his first races on a Kawasaki 750. Starting in 1973, he began racing with support from Andres Ippolito, the local Yamaha importer. But that gentleman was far more than just an importer… he was also a key figure at the FIM and a man of influence at Yamaha, where he could count on a warm welcome in all departments, including the racing division. So in 1974, Johnny Cecotto became Champion of Venezuela and of Latin America by winning all of the 18 races he took part in. In 1975, he entered the World Championships on 350cc and 250cc riding Yamaha bikes from the Venezuelan importer. The French Grand Prix opened the season at Le Castellet, only to see the Great Ago himself being swiped on 350cc by a newcomer… it was a bombshell at the 1975 Grand Prix! The young Venezuelan rider, only 19 at the time, won an unbelievable double on 250cc and 350cc. A week later, Johnny Cecotto did it again, winning the Imola 500 miles on 750cc. Winning 4 out of 10 Grand Prix races, he won the World Championship title ahead of the boss, Agostini. So he became youngest champion on 350cc. Cecotto then became a star, perhaps he was even the first modern motorcycle star… the public went wild, girls came in droves, as did sponsors, dollars and beautiful cars. In 1978, while riding the factory-issue Yamaha YZR750 OW31, a high-powered machine perfectly suited to his riding style, he was more successful than in 1976, getting his second Championship title on 750cc. The years that followed had their ups and downs, until the pilot decided in 1981 to go from two- to fourwheelers. In 1983, he ended up in Formula 1 racing with the great Ayrton Senna. Gould went on accumulating substantial experience, until the 1970 season which saw him in a constant battle with Kelvin Carruthers for the World title on 250cc. Rodney Gould ended up claiming the title, his first – and last – win. He ended his racing career and became Team Manager for Yamaha’s official European team. In 1978 he became runner-up World Champion with his new passenger Stuart Collins after clocking in 2 wins. The Nürburgring race in Germany featured his memorable recovery from last to second place, with a best lap time just 10 seconds short of the pole position time. From 1979 to 1982, Alain Michel and teammate Michael Burkhard stepped on to the podium several times for some stunning victories. Consecration happened with the World Sidecar Champion title in 1990, shared with teammate Simon Birchall and won riding a LCR-Krauser sidecar.
