For more information on the Party’s recent update and how it will affect your club, ensure you check out page 5. In conjunction with our premier partner 7News, the Western Region Football League is pleased to introduce the inaugural Round 7News Day. Held on Saturday May 23, the new initiative will promote 7News’ partnership with the WRFL to the wider community within the western suburbs of Melbourne. Also in this week’s edition of the WRFL Footy Record, we catch up with one young female boundary umpire who is taking her passion for running to the next level, after winning this year’s Victoria Female of the Year Award earlier this month. In her fourth season as a WRFL umpire this year, 25-year-old Danielle McDowell has been using umpiring to develop her running performance and maintain her fitness for competition during the summer athletics season. Turn to page 4 for the full story. In its first year, Round 7News Day will see a special Best Club Player medal awarded to one player from each team for all Under 18, Reserve and Senior matches played in Round 7. The medal will be decided by each team coach and awarded at the end of each match in a small on-field presentation. Of course for the best local radio call in suburban football, don’t forget to tune your stereo to 88.9 WYN FM from 1:30pm this Saturday for the WRFL Match of the Day broadcast between Division Two’s Wyndhamvale vs West Footscray. In addition, a 7News Trophy will be presented to the winner of the senior WRFL Radio Match of the Day clash between Wyndhamvale and West Footscray. Held at Wyndham Vale South Oval, the entire family can get involved in the day with a 7News marquee, merchandise giveaway and a sausage sizzle where funds collected on the day will be donated to charity. The new initiative was developed in conjunction with 7 News to promote the partnership with the WRFL to the wider community in the western suburbs of Melbourne. In its first year, the Round 7News Day will see a special Best Club Player medal awarded to one player from each club for all Under 18, Reserve and Senior matches played in Round 7. The medal will be decided by each team coach and awarded during a small presentation at the end of each match after the two teams come together to shake hands. merchandise giveaways as well as a BBQ for a gold coin, which will be donated to charity. In addition, a 7News Trophy will be presented to the winner of the senior WRFL Radio Match of the Day clash between Wyndhamvale and West Footscray. 7News sees this dedicated round as one which will be built on over the years as our partnership develops, while the WRFL will also be looking to introduce other initiatives that will promote 7News across the league during the season. Held at Wyndham Vale South Oval, the whole family can get involved with a 7News marquee, For the WRFL to effectively administer and support the competition and its clubs, it requires funding. To avoid increasing club management fees and indeed hopefully reduce them, the league continually seeks out new commercial partners so that in the future the giant share of the league’s funding will be from our commercial partners. Since 7 News’ involvement with the league last year, they have become the league’s most significant commercial partner and, while we will continuously seek to source new partners, we need to ensure this partnership continues to grow, with the Round 7 News Day one way to promote 7News throughout the western region. So please show your support for your league and its partners and simply make the switch to 7News, nightly from 6pm. 7NEWS sports anchors Sean Sowerby and Tim Watson 3 WRFL FOOTY RECORD WRFL UMPIRE TAKES HOME FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR “My athletics coach Terry McGarity was the one who introduced me to umpiring three years ago which I found was a good way of maintaining my fitness and a great training opportunity during this off-season.” In case you thought WRFL boundary umpire Danielle McDowell was a bit slow getting to the line, think again, with the 25-year-old taking home the Victorian Female Athlete of the Year award. First pulling on the whites to run the boundary three years ago, McDowell has been sweating it out on the training track over the summer athletics season. With training during the week and matches on the weekends, McDowell also juggles these commitments with her studies, work and personal life. After taking home eight wins and placing runnersup on nine occasions throughout the athletics season, the speedy sprinter accumulated more points than any other female sprinter to take home this year’s award. While she has already chalked up the Victorian Female Athlete of the Year award, McDowell’s has her eyes set on one day becoming the boundary umpire for the Division One Seniors. Officially receiving the honor at the Victoria Runners & Trainers Association awards ceremony earlier this month, the night also recognized the achievements of all athletes who displayed hard work and dedication throughout the summer season. “While I would also like to win the women’s 400m at the Stawell cup this year, I urge other females to become involved in umpiring and pull on the whites in the WRFL.” By Sophie Hammill McDowell, whose race of choice is the 400-meter has competed in a range of events throughout Victoria and Tasmania during the summer season which began in September 2014 to April 5, where it concluded at the Stawell Cup. Follow me on Twitter @hammillsophie Since shifting from netball to athletics four years ago, McDowell said that the individualization of the sport gave her an opportunity to be able increase her own development. “Athletics is about what you put in, is what you get out of it,” McDowell said. “I’ve really enjoyed performing at an elite level and seeking the benefits of athletics.” While she has been training hard for a number of years to get to where she is today, McDowell said her work in the winter months through umpiring has really helped with her progression in the sport. While every player will begin with a certain number of points at the start of the season, their number may change based upon the number of years of service and the model achieving its guiding principles. Officially released to all regional General Managers and metropolitan league CEOs last week, the document summarizes a statewide framework all community clubs must meet, with a player points system and league specific salary cap to be introduced. In addition to the points system, a salary cap will also be applicable to each club, which will endeavor to bridge the gap between the lower spending clubs and the higher ones. As part of the salary cap, all players will have to sign a standard statewide contract which will include a statutory declaration by the player, declaring their playing history and remuneration, which will be logged with the league. The Program comes after the vast majority of leagues, including the WRFL, raised concerns over the increase of player payments and the sustainability of clubs in grassroots football at the 2013 Community League Conference. “While the salary cap is based on an honour system, the WRFL will be conducting audits throughout next year to ensure all clubs are meeting the requirements,” Tregear said. After conducting a survey of both regional and metropolitan senior clubs, 83 per cent of respondents were in support of the introduction of a statewide regulation system. “If clubs are caught cheating, there will be significant penalties invoked for any club stepping outside the lines.” Of the 369 clubs who participated in the survey, 19 WRFL senior clubs were involved, equaling the second highest number of club respondents in the state, along with the Northern Football League. While the two systems are separate, they will work together to regulate the amount of premium players recruited in one year and lessen the burden on clubs to raise money to pay players. With 63 per cent of clubs surveyed admitting to paying every senior team player, the proposed twopart program will aim to combat spiralling player payments seen in recent times. “We’ll arrange a salary cap figure in conjunction with our clubs, but in doing so, we’ll also have the knowledge of what other metropolitan leagues are looking to implement as a salary cap as it is in everyone’s interest not to have a too big of a spread between neighbouring leagues.” A player points system will allocate all senior players, existing and recruited, with a certain amount of points based on their playing history and achievements. The maximum number of points allocated for a player is six, while the minimum number of points for any individual player is one. Informing all senior WRFL clubs of the proposed plan at a meeting held last Wednesday night, clubs will be asked to begin the process of allocating player points to its 2015 senior playing list as of next week. In order to determine how many points are allocated to a player, clubs will use a statewide criteria system that outlines what each point is worth. “By October-November this year we’ll need to be in a position to get this underway, so we will be monitoring our clubs on a weekly basis, collating the information they provide us and communicate the results to our clubs before any formal decisions are made.” WRFL chief executive Bob Tregear said that the idea for the points system rewards clubs for developing home grown junior players and reduces those recruiting a large number of premium players at once. “We’re not exactly sure what total number of points will be allocated to clubs in specific divisions, but the league will set that in consultation with its clubs later this year.” By Kirstie Fitzgerald 5 WRFL FOOTY RECORD DIVISION ONE Seniors/Reserves Fixture ROUND 1 Port Melbourne Colts 12.22-94 St Albans 9.8-62 Deer Park 26.14-170 Werribee Districts 12.14-86 Sunshine – Bye 11 April 2015 def def by def def by Albion 11.8-74 Hoppers Crossing 11.15-81 Spotswood 7.9-51 Altona 13.12-90 def def def by def by Port Melbourne Colts 4.6-30 St Albans 14.13-97 Deer Park 18.14-122 Sunshine 20.7-127 def by def def def Spotswood 14.15-99 Altona 5.10-40 Sunshine 5.11-41 Albion 2.3-15 def TBA def by def Port Melbourne Colts 4.9-33 Deer Park Werribee Districts 23.20-158 Hoppers Crossing 11.12-78 def def def def by Sunshine 6.13-49 Werribee Districts 10.8-68 Altona 10.13 -73 Spotswood 15.16-106 def def by def def by Port Melbourne Colts 8.6-54 St Albans 15.9-99 Albion 3.5-23 Spotwood 14.10-94 18 April 2015 ROUND 2 Hoppers Crossing 15.16-160 Spotswood 18.12-120 Altona 7.4-46 Albion 13.13-91 Werribee Districts – Bye ROUND 3 Port Melbourne Colts 9.5-59 St Albans 13.6-84 Werribee Districts 10.9-69 Hoppers Crossing 20.21-141 Deer Park – Bye St Albans 16.17-113 Deer Park 11.6 -72 Hoppers Crossing 17.10-112 Albion 9.8-62 Port Melbourne Colts – Bye Sunshine 20.16-136 Werribee Districts 12.10-82 Deer Park 17.14-116 Altona 11.11-77 Hoppers Crossing – Bye Port Melbourne Colts St Albans Hoppers Crossing Albion Spotswood – Bye Werribee Districts Deer Park Sunshine Altona V V V V Port Melbourne Colts Albion Hoppers Crossing Spotswood Deer Park St Albans Werribee Districts Sunshine Altona – Bye V V V V St Albans Deer Park Werribee Districts Sunshine ROUND 9 Port Melbourne Colts Hoppers Crossing Spotswood Altona Albion – Bye Port Melbourne Colts St Albans Werribee Districts Hoppers Crossing V V V V Altona Sunshine Albion Spotswood V V V V St Albans Deer Park Hoppers Crossing Albion V V V V Sunshine Werribee Districts Deer Park Altona V V V V Port Melbourne Colts St Albans Hoppers Crossing Albion V V V V Deer Park St Albans Werribee Districts Sunshine V V V V Port Melbourne Colts Hoppers Crossing Spotswood Altona 11 July 2015 18 July 2015 ROUND: 14 Sunshine Werribee Districts Altona Spotswood Port Melbourne Colts – Bye ROUND: 15 25 July 2015 Port Melbourne Colts St Albans Albion Spotwood Hoppers Crossing – Bye ROUND: 16 Werribee Districts Deer Park Sunshine Altona Spotswood – Bye 1 August 2015 ROUND: 17 Port Melbourne Colts Albion Hoppers Crossing Spotswood Altona – Bye 13 June 2015 8 August 2015 15 August 2015 ROUND: 18 St Albans Deer Park Werribee Districts Sunshine Albion – Bye Elim/Qual final: 1st/2nd semi final: Preliminary final: Grand Final: No football played: Saturday, 6 June 2015 (Queen’s Birthday weekend) WWW.WRFL.ORG.AU V V V V ROUND 13 30 May 2015 ROUND 8 Hoppers Crossing Spotswood Altona Albion 4 July 2015 Port Melbourne Colts Deer Park Werribee Districts Hoppers Crossing St Albans – Bye 23 May 2015 V V V V V V V V ROUND 12 16 May 2015 ROUND 7 Port Melbourne Colts St Albans Deer Park Werribee Districts 27 June 2015 Spotswood Altona Sunshine Albion Deer Park – Bye 9 May 2015 ROUND 6 V V V V ROUND 11 2 May 2015 ROUND 5 20 June 2015 Port Melbourne Colts St Albans Deer Park Sunshine Werribee Districts – Bye 25 April 2015 ROUND 4 Altona 12.9-81 Sunshine Albion 7.10-52 Spotswood 12.17-89 St Albans – Bye ROUND 10 Albion Hoppers Crossing Spotswood Altona Sunshine – Bye 6 Weekend of 22/23 August Weekend of 28/29 August Weekend of 5/6 September Weekend of 12 September DIVISION ONE DIVISION ONE Detailed Results SENIORS RESERVES SUNSHINE 20.16 (136) PORT MELBOURNE COLTS 8.6 (54) SUNSHINE – GOALS: L. ROUND WRAP DIVISION ONE SENIORS A third of the season is gone and the race for the five is certainly no clearer and really only Albion looks out of contention. After their finish last year the Tigers would have expected to be a top three side but look far from that at the moment. Spotswood has the bye and will be a chance to assess the season after a terrible start they have fought back well. I have questioned St. Albans but their away win over Werribee means they are serious contenders, just how serious might be answered when they host Deer Park this week. Marc Bullen returned to the senior line up last week and Craig Plant debuted, so the Lions are continuing to build depth for later in the season. By Kevin Hillier Albion is doing the hard yards and will find the inconsistent Altona too strong even though they are at home. Altona need to string some wins together but with the bye next week and then games against the top sides that will not be easy. There is no doubting the talent at Altona with Post, Robbins, Turnbull, Lunardi, Healy, O’Leary and Rafferty, they just can’t seem to click at the same time. Hoppers Crossing v Sunshine will be an interesting game. The return of Patrick Wiggins to the Kangaroos makes a big difference though they can’t fall into the trap of bombing it into the forward line and expecting results from the former Bulldog. Hoppers will be rested after the bye and ready to go. Matty Ryan, Wayde Skipper and Jordan Mead have been on fire before their break and Steve Kretiuk will be keen to start a very crucial month of football off with a win. The Warriors have Werribee Districts, Deer Park and St. Albans in the coming weeks. It is the month that will shape where they are going to finish in the top five. The game was over at half time as the home side led by 63-points, with the Cats only managing to register a solitary point in the second quarter. The 5th vs 8th clash was set up for a tight second half, with the margin only 17-points at half time. A seven goal to zero third term ended any chance of a Colts come-back, managing just three points for the quarter. By the final siren the lead had stretched to 78-points, a good response from the Lions who bounced back from a loss in Round Five. The final term was much of the same as Sunshine kicked another five goals, to run home 17.11(113) to 3.13(31) winners. Sitting one win clear of its closest competitors in third place, Deer Park will no doubt want to replicate their performance last week when they travel to play reigning premiers St. Albans. The win sees the Kangaroos sit at fourth place on the ladder as they look to play second placed Hoppers Crossing who will be ready to rumble coming off the bye last week. By Connor Pain Follow me on Twitter @connor_pain Around the grounds, Altona won its third straight game of the year, downing Spotswood 12.10(82) to 6.7(43). A five goal third term was key for the home side, in the 39-point win, with Jye Comeadow, Shaun Collis, Bill El Souki each booting three. The result pushes both sides in different directions, as the Vikings hit a purple patch in form leaving them sitting just outside the top four, while the Woodsmen are now one of three teams still with just one win after six rounds. Round seven will see Altona travel to face Albion in search of their fourth consecutive win, while Spotswood have the week off, scheduled with the Round Seven bye. At John McLeod Oval, a six goal haul to Deer Park’s Dean Stankovic has led the Lions to a thumping 17.7(109) to 4.7(31) win over Albion. No upset was bigger than Caroline Springs’ round five win over North Footscray but as the saying goes ‘a week is a long time in football’, and it was a long four quarters against Yarraville-Seddon for the Lakers. The Eagles are building solidly into the season and their thumping 103-point victory over Caroline Springs has squared Yarraville-Seddon’s ledger for the first time this year. It was the nature of victory though that must have the leading pack worried at the fire power still left in the former Division One side’s arsenal. The trio only left five to raffle amongst team mates but it’s hard to imagine head coach Dean Callaway complaining. Enterprising half forward Harmes showed his versatility – hurting the Lakers both in the air and on the ground while spearhead Boyce continued what has been an excellent year, moving to equal second on the competition goal kicking table with West Footscray’s Damien Yze. Meanwhile Manor Lakes host North Footscray in a tussle for third and Yarraville-Seddon should continue their climb against Sunshine Heights. Finally, Glen Orden and Caroline Springs clash in a must win encounter if either side still harbours finals ambitions. By Justin Lemmon Follow me on Twitter @JustinLemmon1 The performance was a letdown for Caroline Springs on the back of successive wins built upon defensive accountability. The victory narrows the early likely finals field to five sides, leaving Caroline Springs, Glen Orden and Sunshine Heights making up the numbers. In a round that featured three blowouts over three figures, the closest game was at Glen Orden where a brave Hawks outfit lead till halftime but were overrun to the tune of 20-points by the Falcons. It was another excellent defensive performance from the Falcons – no club comes within 100 of their miserly 295-points conceded for the season. Meanwhile, North Footscray delivered what was expected against the struggling Sunshine Heights and Rooster Munir El Houli’s bag of seven highlighted a thumping 136-point West Footscray victory over Manor Lakes. Round seven is headlined by the long awaited top of the table clash between the Falcons and Roosters. It is a battle of the best attack versus best Yarraville-Seddon’s Dean Henneman disposes of the ball just in defence in a match that will set flag favouritism. the nick of time. LADDER: RESERVES Sunshine Heights were on the end of a 202-point loss after travelling to Hansen Reserve to face an in-form North Footscray. The Devils’ Brendan Upton was unstoppable on the day, playing his best game for the season and scoring eight goals. Dragons’ duo Matthew Sposato and Russell Hall tried hard all day, but were simply no match against Devils Joey Lanciana and Rhys Andreatta who wouldn’t let anyone get close to gaining possession of the ball. There were high scoring games all round as Wyndhamvale travelled to neighbourhood rival Glen Orden where the Falcon’s enjoyed a 19-goal victory while Manor Lakes failed to win three in a row after the Roosters kept their undefeated status alive to chalk up a 29 -goal win. Yet the big movers of the day was YarravilleSeddon who now sit above Caroline Springs in fourth position on the ladder after defeating the Lakers by 13-goals. In round seven, Wyndham Vale South Oval is the place to be today as the two undefeated teams go head-to-head in a match which will decide who can keep their winning streak alive and who will sit on the top of the ladder. Glen Orden is set to make the drive up to Caroline Springs, as the Hawks try and win their second match for the season while Manor Lakes will host a special Breast Cancer Awareness round when North Footscray meet them later today. After last week’s loss Sunshine Heights are eager to prove themselves when they take on YarravilleSeddon at Ainsworth Reserve. UMPIRES CORNER By Graeme Hodgart Nature brings. However rest assure that even if Melbourne’s weather does wreak havoc across the west, our umpires are certainly up for the challenge. Crowded House singer Neil Finn certainly had the right words to describe Melbourne’s weather when he sang, “Four seasons in one day.” Recent weeks has seen our local football played in wet, windy and at times sunny conditions, which certainly does test the patience of everyone involved. While the weather affects the players, officials and spectators, our umpires also have to think about the weather and its affect on the game and make appropriate changes. Field umpires are coached and drilled in getting into the correct position to watch the play and the players. Windy and wet conditions mean that controlling umpires have to re-assess their strategy in making the best position. With a strong breeze blowing, the football is quite often taken off its usual trajectory while wet conditions can see players struggle to control the ball and packs tend to form more often. Field umpires may make some allowances for the conditions but they still must umpire according to the rules of the game. LAWS OF THE GAME – QUIZ #7 Last week’s question: The field umpire blows the whistle for a mark but then realises that the ball had bounced into Player A’s hands just before Player B from the opposing team immediately grabbed him correctly. What happens next? The correct answer was (OPTION A). The field umpire blows the whistle and calls for a ball up. This week’s question: Boundary umpires also need to adapt when the conditions are poor. Strong cross winds usually mean that tossing the ball into play is a tough assignment. Often the ball tends to keep to one side of the ground meaning that the boundary umpire is worked to excess with a long line of throw-ins one after another. The same can happen when the conditions are wet and greasy and often when the ball is contested close to the boundary it tends to go out of bounds in quick succession. Player A has a set shot for goal but the ball comes off the side of the boot, crosses the boundary line on the full near the behind post before striking the boundary umpire who is standing approximately half a metre behind the post. After striking the boundary umpire on the shoulder the ball rebounds and hits the behind post on the full. What happens next? he boundary umpire blows their whistle, (a) T signals out of bounds and prepares to throw the ball back into play. Goal umpires also need to readjust their game plan due to the prevailing conditions. A greasy ball tends to skid when it hits a wet surface and can drop quickly due to being water-logged or caked with mud. In windy conditions, the football can also swirl, drop, float or bend depending on the direction of the breeze, as well as how hard and high it is kicked. Scrambling packs of players in the goal square or near the scoring lines with a wet ball in greasy conditions can also be tricky. (b) T he boundary umpire blows their whistle, signals out of bounds on the full, hits the behind post three times and prepares to throw the ball back into play. (c) T he boundary umpire blows their whistle, signals out of bounds on the full, hits the behind post three times and the defending team is awarded a free kick. Hopefully this weekend brings milder weather so that everyone can enjoy the game without worrying too much about the challenges Mother Be sure to check out the correct answer in next week’s WRFL Footy Record. 29 WRFL FOOTY RECORD TIV DIVISION THREE BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION TRAINING Seniors/Reserves Fixture ROUND 1 Braybrook 15.11-101 Sanctuary Lakes 12.10-82 Laverton 9.7-61 Albanvale 15.10-100 11 April 2015 def by def by def by def North Sunshine 16.21-117 Wyndham Suns 14.15-99 Tarneit 14.8-92 Parkside 5.12-42 def by def def by def Albanvale 21.10-136 Braybrook 8.7-55 Sanctuary Lakes 19.5-119 Laverton 13.4-82 def def def def by Wyndham Suns 8.7-55 Tarneit 7.16-58 Laverton 3.4-22 Parkside 8.10-58 (½ time results) def by def by def def Albanvale 18.22-130 Braybrook 16.22-118 North Sunshine 5.14-44 Sanctuary Lakes 10.12-72 TBA def by def by def Laverton Sanctuary Lakes 13.12-90 Tarneit 10.10-70 Parkside 4.7-31 18 April 2015 ROUND 2 North Sunshine 10.11-71 Wyndham Suns 22.16-148 Tarneit 7.15-57 Parkside 13.12-90 ROUND 4 Tarneit 4.5-29 Laverton 13.8-86 Wyndham Suns 15.15-105 Parkside 17.15-117 ROUND 5 Albanvale Braybrook 5.10-40 North Sunshine 5.7-37 Wyndham Suns 12.12-84 ROUND 6 Sanctuary Lakes 9.7-61 Laverton 10.11-71 Tarneit 9.13-67 Braybrook 9.5-59 16 May 2015 ROUND 7 Albanvale North Sunshine Wyndham Suns Parkside Braybrook Sanctuary Lakes Laverton Tarneit V V V V Braybrook Sanctuary Lakes Laverton Albanvale V V V V North Sunshine Wyndham Suns Tarneit Parkside ROUND 8 North Sunshine Wyndham Suns Tarneit Parkside ROUND 9 Albanvale Braybrook Sanctuary Lakes Laverton WWW.WRFL.ORG.AU 30 Sanctuary Lakes Laverton Tarneit Braybrook V V V V Albanvale North Sunshine Wyndham Suns Parkside V V V V Braybrook Sanctuary Lakes Laverton Albanvale V V V V North Sunshine Wyndham Suns Tarneit Parkside V V V V Albanvale Braybrook Sanctuary Lakes North Sunshine V V V V Tarneit Laverton Wyndham Suns Parkside 11 July 2015 18 July 2015 25 July 2015 1 August 2015 8 August 2015 15 August 2015 ROUND 18 Albanvale Braybrook North Sunshine Sanctuary Lakes No football played: Saturday, 6 June 2015 (Queen’s Birthday weekend) V V V V 4 July 2015 ROUND 17 Wyndham Suns Tarneit Laverton Parkside 13 June 2015 Albanvale Braybrook North Sunshine Wyndham Suns ROUND 16 Albanvale Braybrook Sanctuary Lakes Laverton 30 May 2015 V V V V 27 June 2015 ROUND 15 North Sunshine Wyndham Suns Tarneit Parkside 23 May 2015 V V V V Tarneit Laverton Wyndham Suns Parkside ROUND 14 Braybrook Sanctuary Lakes Laverton Tarneit def by Albanvale 10.14-74 def North Sunshine 8.19-67 drawn Wyndham Suns 10.7-67 with def by Parkside 15.12-102 V V V V ROUND 13 Albanvale North Sunshine Wyndham Suns Parkside 9 May 2015 Albanvale Braybrook Sanctuary Lakes North Sunshine ROUND 12 Laverton Sanctuary Lakes Tarneit Parkside 2 May 2015 20 June 2015 V V V V ROUND 11 Albanvale Braybrook North Sunshine Sanctuary Lakes 25 April 2015 ROUND 3 Albanvale 10.13-73 Braybrook 10.7-67 Sanctuary Lakes 12.13-85 North Sunshine 1.5-11 (½ time results) ROUND 10 Wyndham Suns Tarneit Laverton Parkside 1st/2nd Semi final: Preliminary final: Grand finals: Weekend of 22/23 August Weekend of 28/29 August Weekend of 5/6 September DIVISION THREE TIV DIVISION THREE BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION TRAINING Detailed Results SENIORS RESERVES ALBANVALE 10.14 (74) SANCTUARY LAKES 9.7 (61) ALBANVALE – GOALS: M. Albanvale extended its unbeaten record this season with a grueling victory over a Sanctuary Lakes team that proved they can go the distance with any team in the competition. The Sharks led courtesy of a mark along the boundary line that resulted in a kick after the halftime siren. The goal was converted and enforced more heat into the contest. Sanctuary Lakes’ effort was unquestionable and their lead well deserved, however, last year’s runners up emerged from the break in dominating fashion. Led brilliantly by midfielder Sean Blake, the Cobra’s dominated the clearances 9-2 in the third term and hit targets exceptionally by foot. The ladder leaders took 23 marks for the term as Jamie Brooks accumulated plenty of possessions off half back. Sanctuary Lakes entered their attack on only eight occasions for the quarter and simply couldn’t drive the ball deep enough forward. By: Andrew Mead Follow me on Twitter @AndyJMead Cobras captain Nathan Cuthbertson was exceptional in his first game since round two, setting up attacking charges with more intercepting marks than anyone on the ground. Albanvale continued to pour on the pressure with 32 inside 50’s to 15 for the second half. The Sharks’ fight and refusal to die wondering impressed for four quarters; but ultimately fell short by 13-points. Tarneit and the Wyndham Suns played out an intense and dramatic draw at Wootten Road. Playing for their first piece of silverware this season, the neighbouring clubs could not be separated at fulltime. The Titans were exceptional and took the contest right up to the pre-game fancies, keeping the Suns scoreless in the second quarter. North Sunshine allowed inaccurate kicking to hurt them, replacing Laverton at the bottom of the table with an excruciating four-point defeat to the Magpies. The Roadrunners recorded 19 behinds, allowing Laverton the opportunity they desperately needed to record an exhilarating first win of the campaign. Despite going down to Albanvale by 13-points last week, Sanctuary Lakes will be keen to put what they have learnt against the ladder leaders into action when they travel to face North Sunshine this afternoon. Photo: Darrell Jones. 32 DIVISION THREE TIV BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION TRAINING ROUND WRAP DIVISION THREE RESERVES Round six of Division Three Reserves action provided a ripper round for football fans, with four tight games coming out of the weekend. Highlighting the round was Braybrook who celebrated its breakthrough win of the season over Parkside by 15-points. After a solid contest between the two teams, Parkside led by just one-point at quarter time, before the Brookers hit back to take a five-point lead going in to half time. The playing field levelled out however, as both teams went into three quarter time on 9.4-58. North Sunshine will host Sanctuary Lakes in what should be the game of the round, as both teams look to place their claim on the top four and finals action, Parkside host Tarneit and the Wyndham Suns will look to rebound against the second placed Laverton Magpies. For the victors, Peter Kalogirou kicked five goals in just his second game of the season, and provided a headache all day for the Magpies, while David Nguyen played his best game for the season and was named best for Braybrook. For Parkside, Christopher Hall fought hard all day and chipped in with a goal, while Colin Tornatore kicked three majors for his side’s cause. By William Zwar Follow me on Twitter @zwar_w In the round’s other matches, Laverton returned to the winners list after coming back from a 22-point deficit at half time to win by just two-points over North Sunshine. The Magpies kicked nine goals to North Sunshine’s five, as the Roadrunners continue to search for their second win of the season. Tarneit handed the Wyndham Suns their second loss of the season in an upset at Wootten Road Reserve, winning by 18-points. After getting off to a strong start, the Titans showed the Suns what it takes to be a competitor in the WRFL, as Jason Seduikis and Tyson Szkudlarski kicked three goals apiece. Meanwhile, Albanvale continued their undefeated run, this time against Sanctuary Lakes as the Cobras accounted for the home side by 13-points, however not without a strong fight from the Sharks. This weekend Braybrook will be looking to back up their first win, when they face a monster task against the undefeated Cobras away from home. DIVISION THREE Braybrook wasn’t going to let their first win of the season slip, as two of the league’s oldest clubs went head-to-head last weekend. Spotswood will be looking to extend their run at the top when they host Yarraville Seddon at home, while Deer Park will enjoy the week off with the bye. The dominant win not only keeps the reigning premiers’ undefeated tally intact, but also cements their spot on the top of the ladder, two games clear of their closest opponent. By Alex Patterson Follow me on Twitter @alex_Pat94 In other results, Werribee Districts remain in second with a nail-biting four-point win over Deer Park. The highly anticipated second verses third clash didn’t disappoint fans as the Tigers came back from a 14-point three quarter time deficit to sneak home 12.6 (78) to 11.8 (74) victors. Nine individual goal kickers seemed to be the key element in the win, with the Deer Park defence unable to put a stop to Werribee duo Daniel Kerruish and Bior Malual who combined for five majors. In the weekend’s other game, Hoppers Crossing found a win over Yarraville Seddon, the final margin 12.12 (84) to 7.5 (47). It was a close affair all day with the biggest margin reaching just 19-points at half time before the Warriors kicked away in the last to seal their third win of the season. Hoppers Crossing star Joel Radovanovic once again showed his talent in front of goal, finishing with three majors for the match. Today will see Altona return from the round six bye to face Albion at JR Parsons Reserve while neighbourhood rivals Hoppers Crossing and Werribee Districts will go to battle at Hogans WWW.WRFL.ORG.AU This Albion player wasn’t prepared to give up the ball easily after tucking it under his arm and powering away from his opponent last weekend.
