New Year, Lower Payments
It seems like the New Year always starts with extra bills. Family trips, holiday parties,
seasonal shopping…it can add up quickly. Plus, you never know when emergency
expenses, like appliance or car repairs, may sneak in, too. If your goal is to keep holiday
costs in check, then consider a Personal Loan or Line of Credit from Greater Nevada
Credit Union.

◆ Competitive rates* to save you money
◆ Flexible terms to fit your budget
Use your loan to:
◆ Pay for larger expenses, such as a family trip
◆ Cover sudden needs, like a car repair

lower rate and more manageable payment
Remember, at Greater Nevada, our goal is to help you Live Greater. That includes finding
better ways for you to save and earn money, manage and protect your accounts, and
reach your financial goals. Talk to a Greater Nevada representative about a personal loan

It’s Time To Live Greater
Federally insured by NCUA
From the
President
They say it’s the
season of giving,
though at Greater
Nevada I see the
generosity of our staff,
members and community members all year
long. For instance, last month I participated
in Special Olympics Nevada’s annual Bowl
for the Gold fundraising tournament, which
is followed by the Northern Nevada Bowling
Regional for the Special Olympics athletes.
During this weekend event that kicks off
on a Friday evening, many people and
businesses, as well as members of local
law enforcement, donate their time and
money, assist with various needs, and cheer
on the athletes.
Though people are there to make a
difference, there’s also a collective sense
of fun and inspiration. Everyone, including
the SONV staff, volunteers, supporters and
athletes, are genuinely enjoying themselves.
Even the Wolf Pack Marching band, for
which Greater Nevada raises funds each
year, was there to perform at the opening
ceremonies and show their support.
This is just one of many examples in which
Greater Nevada joins with others to give
back to our communities, whether it’s
collecting necessities for those in need,
teaching classes for greater financial
well being, or raising money to help keep
essential community programs running.
As the year comes to an end, I want to
personally thank everyone who gives back
and makes our world a better place. I also
invite anyone who wants to volunteer to
visit gncu.org and look at our Community
Relations page for upcoming opportunities.
We’d love to have you join us.

Communities
Snapshots from 2015
It was another action packed year of community support at Greater
Nevada, where employees donated over 1,500 hours to teach financial
education at local schools and to help local organizations provide food,
shelter and other necessities to those in need.
We also helped raise more than $15,000 for Special Olympics Nevada
(SONV) and the athletes who inspire us. In addition, Greater Nevada
volunteers assisted at various SONV events, including the Polar Plunge,
Summer Games and Bowl for the Gold.
Speaking of fundraising, many thanks to everyone who made donations
to the Wolf Pack Marching Band. Greater Nevada is matching those
donations dollar for dollar up to $20,000 total per year.
We welcome all of our Greater Nevada members to join us in upcoming
events that help our communities. Visit gncu.org and click on Community
Relations to see how you can get involved.
GNCU President/CEO Wally Murray introduces members of the
Wolf Pack Marching Band, who performed at the recent Special
Olympics Nevada Bowl for the Gold fundraising event.
Warmest regards and God bless,
Wally Murray

A Message from
Greater Nevada Financial Services
The Two Biggest
Retirement Misconceptions
While the idea of retirement has changed, certain financial
assumptions haven’t. There are two common financial
misconceptions about retirement that could prove financially
harmful to your future.
1
2
Assuming retirement will last 10–15 years
Today, both men and women who reach age 65
can anticipate around 20 additional years of life.
Also, if you have good health insurance and access
to excellent health care, you may be poised to live
even longer. Here’s the bottom line: every year, the
possibility is increasing that your retirement could last
20–30 years. So assuming you’ll only need 10–15
years of money for retirement could be a mistake.
Assuming too little risk
Our appetite for risk declines as we get older, and
rightfully so. Yet there may be a danger in becoming
too risk-averse. There are three issues that can affect
your quality of life and/or income over time: taxes,
healthcare costs and inflation. Could you manage to
live the rest of the year on the income you earned in
1999? That’s what can happen if your income doesn’t
keep up with inflation—essentially you end up living
on yesterday’s money. Given how long retirement may
last, growth investing is extremely important.
How are you envisioning retirement right now? Regardless of
where you are, it is vital to avoid the common misconceptions
and proceed with clarity. Contact a Greater Nevada Financial
Advisor to help you plan today by calling (775) 882-2060.

Home & Contents Insurance Hints & Tips
Choosing the right home and contents insurance involves more than simply valuing your assets and choosing the cheapest
premium. Insurers design different products to suit a broad customer base so it’s important to make sure your policy covers what’s
important to you. Here are some things to consider:
• Know your limits. If you have specific assets worth more than the standard limits, consider insuring them separately.
•G
oing out of town? Leaving your place vacated for an extended period of time may void your insurance policy. Check the
maximum term that applies with your insurer, as you may require extra coverage.
•T
ermite damage. Damage from pests such as termites is usually not covered in your policy, as insurance companies see pest
control as the homeowner’s responsibility in the normal up-keep.
• Work from home? If you have a designated space for working from home, you’ll need to have a separate business insurance
policy to cover any damages that may occur to your home office.
• Got pets? Not all policies cover property damage done by pets, so it’s important to find out if your insurer will replace that
chewed up couch. Some insurers also offer pet insurance to their home and contents policyholders, which may come in handy if
your older dog needs a knee replacement.

purchased from an agent or insurance company of the member’s choice.
