research applications, beginning with 3D cell culture systems. AIM’s
3D cell culture chips enable multicellular models to be established
in extracellular matrices of the users’ choice (e.g. collagen, Matrigel,
etc.). Stable gradients of pressure and chemicals can be established
to model interstitial flow and concentration gradients respectively.
Applications developed to date include angiogenesis, cancer metastasis
(intra-/extravasation, spheroid dispersion), chemotaxis and stem cell
differentiation. These models can also be use for screening compounds
that affect these biological processes. AIM chips are consumables
designed to be used with standard cell biology lab equipment without
the need for new capital expenditures. AIM Biotech will supply chips &
accessories to the research community initially, and will expand into the
provision of testing services for the pharmaceutical industry. Pharma
customers can benefit from quick answers to whether an existing

SIMTech Microfluidics Foundry- manufacturing of microfluidics devices
harnesses capabilities from multidisciplinary fields such as chemistry,

Baldr Biosystems is a medical device company founded in 2012 as a spin-off
from the Agency for Science, Technology, and Research (A*STAR) and National
University of Singapore (NUS). The company is dedicated to R&D, design, and
prototyping of accurate, yet cost-effective medical devices and tests for the the
point-of-need. The company’s initial focus is on nucleic acid-based tests (NATs)
utilising the quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) technology - the golden
standard in molecular diagnostics. Baldr Biosystems’ first product is the bCycler,
a low-cost, battery-driven qPCR-thermocycler with an A5-sized footprint. The
bCycler has two outstanding features: a highly-sensitive multiplex-capable optical
detection system for accurate quantitative measurements and an overall power
consumption of less than 10Wh, which makes it possible to run the bCycler for a
full working day on a Li-ion battery pack. All the technical features of bCycler have
been protected by a comprehensive IP portfolio, whereby individual patents have
already been granted in selected geographies. The bCycler excels in handling
very small test sample volumes and is manufactured in large part from off-theshelf components, resulting in significantly lower cost/test. Together with beta-site
clinical collaborators and assay developers we are currently looking into NATs
targeting medical/companion diagnostics, food authenticity, and brand security.

diagnosis of tissue with demonstrated clinical proof of efficacy,
