Open the window, and let the air
Freshly blow upon face and hair,
And fill the room, as it fills the night,
With the breath of the rain's sweet might.
Hark! the burthen, swift and prone!
And how the odorous limes are blown!
Stormy Love's abroad, and keeps
Hopeful coil for gentle sleeps.

Not a blink shall burn to-night
In my chamber, of sordid light;
Nought will I have, not a window-pane,
'Twixt me and the air and the great good rain,
Which ever shall sing me sharp lullabies;
And God's own darkness shall close mine eyes;
And I will sleep, with all things blest,
In the pure earth-shadow of natural rest."

Administrator Notes
With Deepest Sympathies...
I feel like I just wrote about the beginning of summer and here we are at the
end! I hope everyone has had a wonderful and safe summer so far! We have had
the opportunity to have a very fun class
come from Lee High school come and
work with us. They are a group of students
from other countries who are working on
their English with other academic subjects
to get a better understanding of the
world around them. They recently came
in to talk and read to us about the differences in climate and nature between
their home country and Michigan! It was
very informative and we are happy to establish an ongoing relationship with the
English Learners Program. For the
month of August, we will be collecting
school supplies for this class. Please take
any donations to Nancy in Life Enrichment. We will be collecting paper, folders, pens, pencils, rulers, glue, colored pencils, markers, Kleenex, socks, winter hats,
gloves, etc. Thank you for your kind donations!
Our thoughts and prayers are extended to
the family and friends of Hazel W.,
Syne B., Dan B., and Marge V.
Thank you for sharing their lives with us.
Happy Anniversary...
Congratulations and best wishes to Ben
and Isabelle J. who are celebrating
68 years of marriage on August 31!
Welcome to...

Dorothy V.
Dorothy V. was born to Lucas and Tilly D. on
May 7, 1930 in Zutphen, MI. She had four sisters and one brother. The family lived on a farm
and Dorothy remembers driving a team of horses
to help with the haying. She also helped feed the
chickens and gather eggs. Dorothy didn’t like the
broody hens because they always pecked her
hands when she tried collecting the eggs. She attended a two room school that went through the
8th grade. She walked 1 ½ miles to school. In the
winter her dad would bring them to school in a
horse drawn sleigh when the plows couldn’t get
through. At the age of sixteen, Dorothy went to
work at Colonial Clock Company in Zeeland.
She bought a beautiful grandfather clock shortly
after she started working, which she has in her
apartment at Sheldon.
Dorothy was introduced to her husband Nelson by one of her cousins. They were married in
October 1950. Nelson soon left for the service
and was in Germany for two years. Dorothy
moved back in with her parents and continued working at Colonial Clock. When
Nelson returned from Germany they
bought his father’s farm in Hudsonville. They raised beef cattle
and grew corn. Nelson also
worked installing irrigation systems for DeLanges and various
blueberry farms. They had five
children. The children pitched
in before and after school to help
with the chores. They would help
Dorothy pick corn in the morning
so she could put it up in the freezer.
They also sold the corn at a roadside
stand.
As a family they enjoyed going to three fairs
every year to eat special “fair food” and look at the
cattle. They attended 1st Hudsonville CRC
where Nelson served as an elder and deacon.
Their church family was a very important part of
their social life.
When their youngest child was four, Dorothy
took a position as a CNA at Hudsonville Christian Nursing Home. She worked the 7 – 11 shift
and retired after 25 years. She enjoyed her work,
and working with women from her church.
After she and Nelson retired they enjoyed
going on Brenner bus trips to California, Arizona,
and Branson. They camped in a 5th wheel trailer
at the Conference Grounds with their daughter
and her family. They also enjoyed camping with
friends at Prairieville Farm Days on Labor Day
week-end and riding around the grounds using
golf carts.
Her son Roger is a State Representative for the
88th District. She never expected to have a son in
Lansing and is very proud of his accomplishments. He also farms 1000 acres
of squash, parsnips, and rutabagas.
Dorothy moved to Sheldon in
May 2015. She is very content to
be here and thankful for the good
care she receives. She enjoys
playing Bingo, attending music
programs, and the weekly visits
she gets from her two sisters and
a brother-in-law.
Thank you, Dorothy, for sharing a part of your life with us.

Nikkia Nicole L.
Hi, my name is Nikkia Nicole L. and
I am a native of Grand Rapids, MI. I
attended Ottawa Hills High School and
Davenport University. I earned my
LPN and arts degrees from Grand
Rapids Community College.
I am the mother of a very electric, yes
electric, 14 year old boy, Davyon. I recently relocated back to West Michigan from Orange County, CA,
where I spent six years studying Theology at Vanguard
University of Southern California. I also assisted my
husband in movie, film
and media production,
and acted in medical films.
In my free time I like to
study the Torah, travel to 5-Star dining
establishments, and watch Jeopardy.
Some interesting facts about me would
be that I like to bowl, study the Bible
with my companion, and I have been
on The Price is Right!
I am excited to be a second shift supervisor at Sheldon Meadows. I feel
right at home serving senior citizens, which is my absolute passion after working in a wide
variety of nursing specialties.
We are excited to welcome Nikkia and have
her be a part of the Sheldon Meadows team!

Michigan Fresh Fruits & Vegetables
As far as the nutrition value of fruits and vegetables. If fresh is not an option at that time,
frozen is the next best choice. The 3rd best option is canned fruits and vegetables. Really, it is
better to have them any way you can. As a dietitian, I would like to see you eating fruits and
vegetables. Period. But don’t forget, if you are purchasing canned vegetables, try to get the
“no salt added” variety for better health.
There are so many different kinds of produce that it is sometimes hard to keep track of
what is in season. Here is a list of fruits and vegetables that are in season this summer in
